    1. "Well, actually I like books that tell you how to be a better person."

In this sense, The doctor's assistant is ridding herself of negative energy when not necessarily exposed to this. By telling her mind that she sees enough doom in the world she will make herself not want to be like that or feed in to that kind of energy. In my opinion, this actually does work. Not having social media has helped me tremendously over the past 2-3 years its ridiculous !

    2. Andres Serrano,

Andres Serrano is known for his precise photography and his series "The Morgue" He is a major influence in shocking art, as he depicts images of real people that died but hides their faces that way we focus on the textures and overall details that tell a story.

    3. Yet one of them thinks that the nothing that happened was about the two of them not having sex, while the other thinks that "nothing happened" meant that she didn't commit suicide, as she seems to have considered doing.

This is another example that different meanings can draw from the depiction of something.

    4. If we think the Apollo Belvedere is beautiful, what do we say about the naked bottom and legs of a manemerging from a strawberry and scurrying around Bosch's Garden of Earthly Delights?

This shows two complete opposite depictions of beauty as the Apollo Belvedere is a Roman statue depicting a man that shows elegance and structure. Bosch's Garden of Earthly Delights, depicts many naked disfigured humans that all have the exact same face but show almost sadistic images. This can be seen as weirdly beautiful and shows how we really cannot limit the word "Beauty"

    1. In my culture, selfi shness is condemned, especially in women; humility and selflessness, the absence of selfishness, is considered a virtue. In the past, acting humble with members outside the family ensured that you would make no one envidioso (envious); therefore, he or she would not use witchcraft against you

This was a common belief that If you are humble no one can cast bad energy on you, in modern terms this means If you do nothing they say nothing.

    2. I have a vivid memory of an old photograph: I am six years old. I stand between my father and mother, head cocked to the right, the toes of my flat feet gripping the ground. I hold my mother’s hand.

This opening paints a vivid picture of a child looking confused at something.

    1. But in the end, some will just sit aroundtalking about how good the old world was. Some of the younger ones will become gangsters. Some will die and others will go on livingwithout a soul, a future, or a reason to live. Some will make it out of here with hate in their eyes, but so very few make it out of here as humanas they came in, they leave wondering what good they are nowas they look at their hands so long away from their tools,as they look at themselves, so long gone from their families,so long gone from life itself, so many things have changed.

This Part talks about the systematic issues that Mexican-Immigrants face when coming to America. As with everything, it always sounds good at first but what ends up happening is things change so much that life isn't the same and everyone deals with it different ways. The struggle may lead you to the streets, with resentment towards the country, yourself or the world. and you may want things to go back the way they were..

    2.   swallow a pinch of table salt and         make the sign of the cross

Salt is used in holy water, and In catholic culture, making the sign of the cross is a sign of blessing yourself.

    3. Buena Vista–        Santa Rita Courts–Los Projects

Buena Vista is a city in Colorado and Sanita Rita Courts is a public housing community in Austin. I assume this is where the author is talking about.

    4. unobtainables

Unobtainable means that he knows this is something he is not able to have. I find this interesting when speaking about relationships because I feel like that is a common way of thinking. I like how this is relatable to a lot of peoples feelings that someone is "too good for them".

    1. It’s okay, Raquel. I can tell you everything now. Or at least, as much as you can bear to listen to. I know what I am now. I am a bridge.

It seems the author means as a "bridge" he means a connection to the voices or "spirits" were once consuming him but now wants to listen to them and implement that in real life being the bridge this way.

    2. Or perhaps I’m tasting yours, all the tears you’ve never released, restless oceans pushing up against the surface of you.

Here the author implies that there were times that he felt she was emotionless or "heartless" for lack of a better word. He states that he may be tasting all the tears she never released that are built up under her skin like relentless oceans. The other alternative could be that she has been though a lot and he has seen her be very strong. He may be encouraging her to let it out because she is not a communicative person. The author gives a lot to speculate with this one sentence.

    3. And it feels as if my insides have been scraped at, leaving parts of me raw that should never be touched.

The author does a great job of using imagery in this sentence, by showing you how much pain the whispering and voices cause him to feel.

    4. You’d said it’d be your hobby room and double as a guest bedroom, but it didn’t even have a bed in it. Just a single chair. The first time I found you there, your eyes were closed and you were silent, shaking and shaking in that chair.

The author uses foreshadowing a bit here where he states "you'd said it'd be your hobby room and double as a guest bedroom," implying that it was not used for that purpose. The next few sentences he goes further into depth.

    5. chachalacas

Chachalacas are galliform birds from the genus Ortalis. These birds are found in wooded habitats in the far southern United States (Texas),[1][2] Mexico, and Central and South America. They are social, can be very noisy and often remain fairly common even near humans, as their relatively small size makes them less desirable to hunters than their larger relatives.

    6. When the whispers began, I tried to outrun them, first on the treadmill then at the university track. I tried weights. I tried punching the bag in the garage.

The author speaks about his experience in college, and when he says whispers, I begin to think he means criticism or insecurities. He says outrun them like he was running from people saying things about his weight, then goes to university to fit in because he already has faked an image as a "Track athlete".

    7. Memory brought you here. Brought us here. Your history is here. Your family. Your parents and grandparents and great-grandparents.

The author uses short sentences to emphasize the point he is trying to get to the person he is speaking to.
