I had to work with data graphics in a history class a nd I agree that it is frustrating because they are so hard to interpret.

Interesting to see the most common height for a male is 5 eight to 5 ten. I have met a lot of guys that are very tall and the graph just skyrockets down, especially the six to to six four which I thought would be higher

This chart is interesting to look at. I believe that I have a 0.1 percent chance of dying next year as well, and it seems to pick up at age 60, and around 70 it says women and men start dying at the same age. In my family, most common time of death has been the 80s on both sides. I knew that women always tend to live longer than men but I do not really know why that is- maybe we just take better care of ourselves.

    1. Computer files

good to know that png, doc, jpg, etc are all considered as metadata. I am trying to read the little image underneath it but I am not sure what it is explaining.

    2. This was a really helpful article for this week!

    3. letter for files organized alphabetically, access control information ("classified" for instance), logos.

I would never guess a paper file includes metadata. Before I read this article I always had the vision that everything in CS is so complicated, so reading this made me realize that it can be a lot simpler once you wrap your head around the basics of what something is. Then, you can level up to more complex ideas such as metadata in computers.

    4. good understanding of what metadata is.

This article definitely did help me understand metadata. I thought metadata was more complicated in terms of computer and coding, but it really is the basic functions of an application i.e metadata in Microsoft word are the titles, subheadings, number of pages, author, etc.

    5. title, subject,

I did not know this was considered metadata so now I understand the purpose of this weeks assignment where we had to upload a video and audio files by including titles, subjects, and descriptions.

    1. Feministchallengesrevealthatthequestionsthatareasked—and,evenmoresignificantly,thosethatarenotasked—

I have heard this somewhere before. Sometimes it is okay to ask questions sometimes it is not okay to ask certain questions. It is good to ask questions and I think the last sentence is implying that there is more to be addressed surrounding women.

    2. Figure1.4.Googleautosuggestresultswhensearchingthephrase“whyareblackpeopleso,”January25,2013.

In school, I had people saying this stuff about black and Indian people left and right. As an east-Indian myself, I had my share of racism. Some people also ask why we are so loud, why we stink, why we believe in elephants, the list goes on. People do not realize that these are stereotypes and it does not apply to everyone. I remember the elephant question very well. I was in my grade 10 social studies class and a girl asked that and the whole class started to look at me. I am not Hindu, rather Punjabi but I was uncomfortable when she brought it up. However, I am glad she asked to clear up the confusion. Racism is everywhere and it will never go away but atleast people like us can be educated that it is an on-going issue and we can be a part of trying not to partake in racist stereotypes.

    3. filledwithpornwhenIlookedfor“blackgirls.”

It is shocking to think that people of colour have this label against them. I did not know about this issue until I read the article

Crazy how people still think like this in a world where men and women are supposed to be viewed as equal. Atleast in North America, I do not see so much discrimination against women except maybe in the workplace for male-dominated jobs such as engineering, computing, and jobs in the trades like mechanics. Imagine if we still lived in those times where women could not work, become educated, and speak of their opinions. I wonder which countries search these queries the most.

    1. but it’s hard to provide a really representative list

There are so many aspects to DH I realized that one solid list like this one cannot explain all the topics. I guess people are still trying to form a concrete definition of what DH is since there can be so many interpretations.

    2. A painstakingly researched re-creation of the Hellenistic city of Magnesia

I remember using 3d modelling to design my own house in high-school during info-tech class. I went out of my comfort to take info-tech since I was one of two girls in the class. This picture brought back memories!

    3. -side language JavaScript (

I remember using javascript in grade 11 in high school but it has been over 2 years now so I would need to brush up on how to use it.

    1. or example, create a PDF, an HTML or an ASCII file from a Microsoft Word document or cre-ate an EPUB file directly from an Adobe InDesign file.

I definitely use word, pdf, and adobe everyday. If microsoft word did not have a pdf converter and was just stand-alone it would be a pain. I have tried using phone applications to convert documents to pdf and it never turns out the same nor is it as simple and efficient as word. You can also do many other things with word and convert to jpg and several other formats. Although many people like to use google docs now, I still always type in word and I only use google docs to share and edit my work with others.

    2. Blogging

I can see myself doing this and sharing recipes of what I cook online. Although I am not a huge social media fanatic sharing things I am passionate about excites me, so blogging is a good way to do that

    3. Depending on the sophistication of computer programs and printers, humanists can now recreate in minute detaii-everything from an ancient Greek kylix to a scale model of a baroque-style ball gown,

In high school my biology teacher made us 3d print models and I was intrigued to see how it works and how long it takes. If you are skilled enough you can make almost anything you want.

    4. Text Mining:

this answers my question from last week because I did not know what text mining was.

    1. , but most humanitiesprofessors remain unaware, uninterested or unconvinced that digitalhumanities has much to offer.

Some professors I had are not open-minded to technology but what everyone must realize is how quickly it is changing the world of academia. There are thousands of programs out there that we can implement and I might argue that using technology is simpler for professors once they get the hand of it. With online, lots of profs used McGraw hill, Cengage and stuff like that. Now that they all had experience using some online tools I think most will continue to use it in-person.

    2. The humanities and social sciences are the emerging domains for usinghigh-performance computers,”

I definitely do use computers more in these two areas of academia more so than I have been with my regular science classes. I was introduced to more programs in my humanities classes whereas in classes like biology and physics we only use excel. I can see how this statement is true since this year I did more collaborative projects in classes such as political science and economics

    3. aesthetics, existence and meaning, the words that bring tears or themelody that raises goose bumps. Are these elements that can bemeasured?

I feel like this is talking about how there are so many unknown aspects of DH. It can either bring tears due to how hard it might be or goosebumps because of how s cultivating new discoveries are. I am not too sure what the last sentence means but perhaps its talking about how the existence of DH cannot be measured? This is just my interpretation I would love to hear what others think.

    4. digital mapping to data mining

I honestly have no clue what these are but excited to learn in the next upcoming weeks.

    5. The ease with which a community can collaborate on the production ofscholarship is something that is fundamentally changing the way we doour work,”

Engaging with scholars is definitely a big part of my academic life. By annotating we are engaging with the work by trying to make an understanding of it by connecting it to other ideas. Therefore. interacting with scholars does not always have to be about writing essays and doing research.

    6. “a post-theoreticalage.”

I have heard this term before but do not quite understand what it means. I think this is just referring to life today in the 21st century but I wanted to clarify.

    7. he map at right visualizes part of Jefferson's 1786 trip to Englan

I saw a TV show called "What on Earth?" and it was talking about how there are hundreds of satellites in space and how they can track where people go. The show was investigating where several serial killers went to murder their victims such as Robert Pickton, Ted Bundy, and Jack the Ripper. I am not sure if this map is showing all the places Jefferson went to during his trip to England, but it reminded me of the show. The idea of all those satellites in space and how they can track you is intimidating.

    1. defines digital humanities by your ability to “build” things.

This an interesting and true way to put it. Digital humanities means using creativity and your skills to create pieces of work, which ultimately "builds" into a final product. It is up to you to learn how to put all the pieces together to build the final product and that takes some problem-solving and critical thinking.

    2. Writing on your own project site may seem small in the large universe of digital humanities, but it is something that almost all humanities scholars can do to use the digital in their own work.

It is good to learn the basics and learning about how to make websites, blogs, and social media posts is beneficial for marketing which allows anyone from anywhere to interact with your work.

    1. There were some developments in processing tools, mostly through the shift from tape to disk storage. Files no longer had to be searched sequentially.

My mom and dad still have their old tapes but we never use them anymore. I also remember burning cd's but we never use them either. The phone has taken over and we just use aux or bluetooth to connect to speakers. I doubt I would ever use a CD again unless I find an old movie, but the computers barely even have a slot to load them anymore since people use netflix and other websites to watch shows and movies.

    2. The personal computer is now a necessity of scholarly life, but in its early days it was considerably more expensive in relation to now and early purchasers were enthusiasts and those in the know about computing.

I did not think that computers were more expensive back then than they are now. If you look at iMac's and MacBook airs, they are well in the 2000 dollar range if you buy them brand new. Prices of phones, tablets and computers have gone up considerably so I wonder how much they were valued at in the 80s and 90s.

    3. and more and more people had come across computers in their everyday life and had begun to think about what computers might do for their research and teaching.

The 1970s and 1980s definitely was a time where computers were new and people wanted to buy them for practicality. Computers today have become our whole world. We rely on computers to keep all of our information such as emails, documents, and digital applications. Computer science has grown as a subject due to how fast technology is advancing. A computer can track information and store it which is why I think the term consolidation in this sense means that computers are so effective and irreplaceable that life could never go back to how it used to be without them.

    4. Published in 1962, this study did not use a computer to make the word counts, but did use machine calculations which helped Ellegard get an overall picture of the vocabulary from hand counts (Ellegard 1962). What is probably the most influential computer-based authorship investigation was also carried out in the early 1960s.

I did not know that the most influential investigation was carried in the 60s because I would have thought that it would be later on when technology was more prevalent. I just google searched the image of the old mechanical calculators and it is interesting to see how that big box became so advanced. Imagine carrying that to a math exam! The dials on it look confusing since you have to turn them. It is fascinating to see how much technology advances and how it becomes faster and faster.
