    1. SAM: Of course it is. That's what I've been trying to say to you all afternoon. And it's beautiful because that is what we want life to be like. But instead, like you said, Hally, we're bumping into each other all the time. Look at the three of us this afternoon: I've bumped into Willie, the two of us have bumped into you, you've bumped into your mother, she bumping into your Dad . . . None of us knows the steps and there's no music playing. And it doesn't stop with us. The whole world is doing it all the time. Open a newspaper and what do you read? America has bumped into Russia. England is bumping into India, rich man bumps into poor man. Those are big collisions, Hally. They make for a lot of bruises. People get hurt in all that bumping, and we're sick and tired of it now. It's been going on for too long. Are we never going to get it right? . . . learn to dance life like champions instead of always being just a bunch of beginners at it?

Sam takes the problems we face in the world and dance as an example of life without complications. Here Sam is showing how dance treats the soul, how its the time when everything is perfect, its an escape from the troubles and affairs in life. From this I see that Sam uses dance as a third eye to life.

    2. HALLY: [Genuinely moved by Sam's image.] [Wow], Sam! That's beautiful!

Hally is starting to be more appreciative of ballroom dance after Sam describes how it should feel.

    3. SAM: [Undeterred.] Your imagination left out the excitement.

Hally's Imagination of dancing is pretty dull. All he sees is people dancing and having a good time when there is so much more to appreciate like the music and different instruments and when the judges choose a winner.

    4. didn't say it was easy. I said it was simple - like in simple-minded, meaning mentally retarded. You can't exactly say it challenges the intellect.

Hally is not really thrilled when Sam suggest that he give ballroom dance a try. Hally feels that dancing is silly and pointless. Hally could be insecure if he could even do the dance and starts to act this way so he doesn't have to do it.

    1. You've also told me that one many times. HALLY: Well, it just so happens to be the truth

Here I can see how Sam is like a father figure to Hally because he is familiar with the excuses Hally makes for not doing well in school.

    2. Failing a maths exam isn't the end of the world, Sam. How many times have I told you that examination results don't measure intelligence?

This math exam isn't really important to Hally, I wonder why Hally doesn't intend to try to learn or do well in math. This shows us his attitude towards school and how he is not really taking advantage of his education opportunities.

    3. Good question. And I hate to say it, but the answer is: I don't know. Maybe he hasn't even beenborn yet. Or is still only a babe in arms at his mother's breast. [Gosh], what a thought.

What we can take from this is that social reformers are the newer generations or the youth that will one day fight for change and equality.

    4. HALLY: Tried to be clever, as usual. Said I was no Leonardo da Vinci and that bad art had to be punished. So, six of the best, and his are bloody good.

Hally was punished with a paddling. This gives an idea on school discipline in this time.

    5. HALLY: [A world-weary sigh.] I know, I know! I oscillate between hope and despair for this world as well, Sam. But things will change, you wait and see. One day somebody is going to get up and give history a kick up the backside and get it going again.

Hally is aware of the unfairness and corruption in the law in these times and before. He is hopeful for a better future with justice but at the same time has his doubt when hearing these experiences from Sam.

    1. I look at my watch. It has been 25 minutes since someone’s Oldsmobile rolled oddly to a halt. Now the set is clear, the city’s clockwork restored

This shows how this series of events happened all in a short time period of 25 minutes and now things are back to normal like nothing really happened.

    2. “This isn’t an accident,” he says, and I half expect him to follow the procedural script and say, “This is a tragedy,” but it’s not even that; it’s just someone dying, or possibly dying, or maybe he’ll be fine.

Could this event be triggered by some type of activity the driver was partaking in and what made it a tragedy. Here we can see his confusion because he never finds out what happened and he assumed it was an accident.

    1. what the last paragraph wants to say is that the transfer from High school to college is a big life changing event that comes with challenges and the way Eric sees it as a challenge he has to take because of the sacrifices his family had to make for him to have a better future.

    1. There are still ten feet between her and the echoing sound of her own voice, telling her she can still be anybody she wants to

Claire still wants a change in her life. I think Claire is ready to turn things around because she doesn’t like where she is feeling grief and guilt inside of her.

    2. et someone who is still alive yell at her the way her mother is yelling in her head all the time.

This shows how Claire’s mom was tough on her even when she was alive. Just like when Claire felt guilt and grief when she is drinking I think that deep down inside Claire saw her mother as a pedestal that she could never reach. Claire can still feel her mother’s judgement within her actions.

    3. Grief has a palpable quality, and it is all she can feel unless she’s making an active effort to feel something else

This shows us how Claire is feeling and that she is devastated about her mom because she can’t stop grieving. This is a really hard time for her because she can’t really control her emotions the right way and we all know what Claire does to try and cope with her pain.

    4. He is still skinny, his hips slimmer than hers, so she slides underneath him; the weight of her, it seems, might smother him, but the weight of him tethers her to something. He is too gentle with her even after she tells him not to be; after he is finished she has to fake an orgasm to get him to stop

So here we can tell Claire is at a very low point in life. She is losing her mom and her 2nd mom. She is spiraling all over the place and drowning in her emotions so this is like an escape from all the negativity of her mother’s sickness.

    5. Her father keeps long hours, and her mother has a certain formality; Claire loves her, but feels, in her presence, like a miniature adult, embarrassed by the silliness of her six-year-old desires

Claire cannot relate to her mother because she’s not fully mature for her age and the way they act is completely different.

    6. She is strangely embarrassed by the picture, the way it turns her into someone else. She wasn’t wearing the bikini to bother black people

Claire wears a confederate flag bikini her boyfriend gave her and she regrets doing it.

    7. They get high and make out in the pool house that afternoon, and the next and the next and the next.

From Claire’s actions we can tell she is in a reckless and unserious relationship.

    1. She had found and lost the man so quickly. It was as though she had beensnatched from comfort and security and given a sudden, inexplicable beating. Herhead would not clear. She could not think.

Rye is devastated by Obsidians death even though they’d just met she really hates the idea of being alone.

    2. She had not wanted anyone to touch her. What kind of world was this to chance bringing a child into even if the father werewilling to stay and help raise it?

Rye knows what Obsidian is doing and that he is attracted to her but with the current state the world is in she wants no one to touch her not to bring a child into this world. This shows that even though Rye has been affected by the illness she still has a good head on her shoulders.

    3. She had lost reading andwriting. That was her most serious impairment and her most painful.

Reading and writing meant a lot to Rye and when she finds out that Obsidian can read she is probably angry and jealous because she loves to write.

    4. He touched her, touched himself, pointed toward thefloor. In effect, "We are here." She knew he wanted to know where she was going. She wanted to tell him, but she shook her head sadly. She had lost reading andwriting.

Obsidian is curious about where Rye is going but she can’t tell him because she can’t read the map.

    5. Whenshe directed him left and he actually turned left, she began to relax

Rye was having negative thoughts about trusting this man and getting in his car, but now she is starting to ease her mind when he follows her directions.

    6. She wondered how far shewould have to walk now—and wondered if walking a long distance would be heronly problem

Rye is worried about something other than walking long distance. She could be uncomfortable that she's in a strangers car.

    1. If she had let herself think of the possible deadly consequencesof getting into a stranger's car, she would have changed her mind.

Rye is making a decision I feel like she is going to regret. There aren’t any law officials to enforce law if something happens she is getting into a complete stranger’s car.

    2. The bearded man's revolver was on constant display. Apparently that was enoughfor the bus driver. The driver spat in disgust, glared at the bearded man for amoment longer, then strode back to his gas-filled bus

Being armed was enough to de-escalate the situation between the bus driver and officer. There obviously aren’t strict laws in act it’s more like everyone for themselves.

    3. There was no more LAPD, no more anylarge organization, governmental or private.

This is in a different when the laws of society have changed. Regular things to us like cars and buses are unusual to these people. Things are chaotic.

    9. “There was no more LAPD, no more any large organization, government or private”.

This is in a different time maybe the future when the laws of society have changed. Regular things to us like cars and buses are unusual to these people. Things are chaotic.
