In this dialectical tradition, social metabolism is more than a metaphor, it designates the real biophysical process of societal reproduction through purposeful, instituted, economic relations. This realist stance implies that the individual metabolic activity of human beings—as biological organisms—is itself subsumed and mediated by the totality that is social metabolism.
Social Metabolism ist ein Grundbegriff des Ansatzes von Pineault. Der Begriff setzt eine Trennung von „Gesellschaft“ und „Natur“ voraus.
