    1. This text addresses questions about which tech is good, safe and appropriate to use in these complex times if we want to act and work responsibly and remotely.

This text is a good read for OERu Digital Citizenship learners.

    1. To make use of open social annotation does not necessarily mean that instructional activities must be done in a public layer

At OERu, we encourage public annotations tagged with the specific course code which enables these interactions to be harvested for a syndicated course feed for the benefit of the open learning cohorts.

    1. Legal Requirements and RestrictionsMake Open Content and OER Less Open

      This is my comment

    2. sites' content incompatible in an esoteric way that intelligent, well-meaning people can easily miss

As a hopefully intelligent and committed OER advocate, I prefer the copyleft provision as a mechanism to protect resources from commercial enclosure. This is not an esoteric perspective - but derived from 20+ years experience working in the open trenches.

    1. Zoom or Skype

At OERu we prefer using BigBlueButton, an outstanding open source video conferencing tool that was designed for teaching.

    2. Slack and GroupMe

There are excellent open source alternatives, for example Rocket.Chat and Mattermost for digital messaging.

    3. Microsoft Office 365 or Google Drive

There are open source alternatives for these technologies avoiding the need for users to sacrifice their personal data. At the OERu we use Nextcloud with OnlyOffice for collaborative document editing.

    1. Contact North | Contact Nord

A useful summary for getting started with online learning, rather than emergency remote teaching. I don't see a copyright statement, so we need to check with Contact North | Contact Noord if they have applied an open license. I see that their main website is CC-BY-SA.

    1. Entrepreneurship Defined

TIP for OERu LEARNERS: Remember to add the course code tag in the tag field when annotating with Hypothes.is. Eg BMAN111 or IENT101. (Hit the enter key after typing the tag.)

    2. The ability to listen

Listening is one of the most important skills of leadership. Entrepreneurs need to be good leaders, so listen to your staff and customers.

    1. Autonomy

Autonomy comes with the wisdom to listen to others with more experience. Entrepreneurs who learn this early will be more successful - being your own boss comes with advantages, but can also lead to failure.

    1. 39.45%

An interesting statistic - 40% of OERu learners have not participated in an online course before.

    2. 26.97%

High percentage of OERu learners are unemployed (27%)

    3. 19.82%

Strong representation of learners from Sub-Saharan Africa

    4. How old are you?

Majority of OERu learners to date are mature adults. 80% are 25 years or older.

    1. What is Open Education?

This article is written from the perspective of an educator / teacher. What do you think "open education" means from the perspective of a learner? Keen to hear your thoughts!

    1. Van Tuyl hopes she can help the students learn how to make informed decisions

Can you share advice or tips for making informed decisions about the credibility of published information on the internet?

    2. More than 7,800 students in all the academic levels tested were presented with information in social media, news articles, and comments.

How accurate or reliable do you think the data reported in this study is? Can we accept these findings?

    1. These practices can include

Are there any examples of open practice missing from this list in your opinion?

    1. Managers aim to reach short term goals, avoid any risks, and establishstandardization to improve efficiency

Does this suggest that managers do not necessarily focus on long-term strategy? Or stated differently, is the attainment of long-term goals a function of leadership?

    1. It takes neither genius nor heroism to be a manager, but rather persistence, tough-mindedness, hard work, intelligence, analytical ability, and perhaps most important, tolerance and goodwill

Based on your own experience of working with managers, is this an accurate summary of the characteristics of a good manager?

    2. The difference between managers and leaders, he wrote, lies in the conceptions they hold, deep in their psyches, of chaos and order.

This raises the interesting questions of whether you can learn to become a leader, or are leaders born? What do you think? What are the implications for studying the principles of management?

    1. why do you participate in them?

Leading the OER Foundation, I have the privilege of working full-time in OER. I joined the teaching profession with the purpose of sharing knowledge, and open education provides a powerful vehicle to share knowledge freely for all learners.

    2. Using, sharing and collaboratively creating software and computer code (open source software)

This is a key feature of the OERu collaboration. The OER Foundation (which coordinates the OERu) releases all software used for the OERu platform under an open source license. We also publish technical guidelines for anyone interested in replicating any of our technologies. See: https://tech.oeru.org/

    1. Basically, you use your own funds to run your business.

Bootstrapping is a good way to keep business ideas realistic during the early phases of a new startup. If you are risking your own money,, this will sharpen focus. What do you think?

    2. Keep Your Day Job

This is good advice. Given that four out of every five new startups fail, its important to start small testing ideas to generate business insight before taking on the bigger risk of going it on your own. What do you think?

    1. risk failure at the deepest personal levels.

Of all the successful entrepreneurs I know, they have all experienced failure. The ability to learning from mistakes and a healthy dose of perseverance is key to success.

    1. Kanban project work

At the OERu we have applied the Kanban approach to course design and development. This works well where team members are distributed around the world. We use open source tools like Kanboard (https://kanboard.org/) and Wekan (https://wekan.github.io/)

    2. sprints

A hybrid of Agile project implementation has been used to develop open textbooks. See for example the BC open textbook sprint. https://successfulprojects.com/pm-topics/pm-methodologies/. This works well in producing a first draft for iterative refinements.

    1. Globalization

In your view, what are the implications of globalisation for recruiting project managers for the future?

    2. This research indicates that the PM of the future will interface with twice as many stakeholders than the PM does today and consequently will require vastly improved leadership, people and thinking skills

A significant change underscoring the importance of people skills for the future of project management.

    1. Fewer than a third of all projects were successfully completed

Sometimes there are "political" reasons for understating the budgeted cost of infrastructure projects to "influence" voter confidence in new expensive projects. That said, is a failure rate of 33% indicative of poor project management in determining budget or scope or is this the industry standard for risk failure?

    2. An astounding 97% of organizations believe project management is critical

Interesting statistic given that half of all project management offices close within three years (see statistic above.) Are these estimates reliable?

    1. series of five steps in planning out the project schedule

Item for discussion: Are there any steps missing from this list? What would you add and why?

    2. Undoubtedly, this will take several iterations because project resources will appear to be overloaded at points throughout the project schedule

This is good advice - project planning is an iterative process - I've rarely succeeded in generating a successful project plan in the first go and things will change over the duration of the project.

    1. The need for establishing clear project objectives cannot be overstated

Analyzing and understanding the need (see above) is an important step in the process to establishing clear project objectives.

    2. Often the pressure to get results encourages people to go right into identifying possible solutions without fully understanding the need or what the project is trying to accomplish

This is good advice for new project managers. Preempting solutions in the absence of analyzing and understanding the real need can lead to wasting resources.

    1. The checklist below addresses the competencies and attributes companies need to pay attention to when selecting a project manager for a project.

This checklist provides a comprehensive overview of the competencies required of a Project Manager and will be a useful resource for the first IPM101 learning challenge to prepare a job advertisement.

    2. but if the efforts of all the participants are not skillfully coordinated and managed

This highlights the essence of project management and the three overarching goals of a successful project, i.e.: To complete a project:

      • under budget
      • on time
      • within agreed functional / quality standards.
    1. Before advertising became prominent, the price of a newspaper had to cover the costs of doing business. With the growth of advertising, papers that attracted ads could afford a copy price well below production costs.

How does the flow of money influence "free" online courses? Can you think of contemporary examples of how the relationship between revenue stream might influence open online learning?

    2. SIZE, OWNERSHIP, AND PROFIT ORIENTATION OF THE MASS MEDIA

Can you think of an example where size, ownership and profit orientation have influenced the message?

    3. following headings

Examples of important questions to consider when evaluating the message.

    1. Putting the two together allows people to jump to the mistaken conclusion that, somehow, the channel supersedes the content in importance, or that McLuhan was saying that the information content should be ignored as inconsequential.

In today's world of instant messaging, we should be vigilant of superficial or "popular" interpretations without consulting the original sources. What does this mean for our study of critical media literacy?

    2. McLuhan warns us that we are often distracted by the content of a medium (which, in almost all cases, is another distinct medium in itself.) He writes, "it is only too typical that the "content" of any medium blinds us to the character of the medium."

I think this is the crux of the "message." For us utilizing OER as a "new medium" we should reflect on the "message" of what this means for society and culture. Keen to hear your thoughts by replying to this annotation.

    1. Can it be a global concept where being a digital citizen means being a citizen of the digital world or must it remain more localised?

To my mind - this is a critical question. In a globally connected online world - local is not enough. Take the LiDA course for example - there are participants from 59 different countries with very different world views and on different sides of the digital divide. That said , context is important - the definition of digital citizenship for a secondary school learner is likely to emphasise different priorities when compared, for example to what LiDA learners might prioritise.

    1. To become productive citizens, we need to be committed to make sure that no one is denied digital access

This is a complex challenge. In many developing countries the cost of Internet access is unfordable. How do we address these challenges in our individual capacity?

    1. The thing that is important to note is that this is a “both and” not an “either or” scenario.

In the OERu context, this is an important point. Many OERu micro-credentials are mapped to formal academic credit towards university qualifications.

    1. This includes individuals who create or adapt OER for their own teaching and learning purposes; nonprofit OER publishers and libraries; commercial OER publishers; as well as educational technology vendors looking to incorporate OER into their products or services.

The OER ecosystem comprises many players with different goals, and that's fine. For this reason I think the CARE values are important for building a thriving and sustainable network.

    1. primary reason that you took the course?

Consider "important" reasons for taking the course and change to multi-select option.

    2. authors

      Replace "authors" with "developers"

    3. university qualification

Consider incorporating an item to differentiate motivations for engaging with OERU.

    4. If you used an identifying token

Check Limesurvey software to see how to turn off the automatically generated information regarding tokens. We don't use tokens for course evaluation surveys.

    1. This is a fundamental principle of CC licensing.

It is important to remember that CC licenses operate within existing copyright law. CC does not replace copyright - it refines it.

    1. academic skill requirements and how they would be assessed

This emphasises the importance of reading the criteria of the marking rubric to determine what academic skills will be assessed.

    2. The International Journal of the First Year in Higher Education

This is an open access journal, therefore we have permissions to host an online copy of the article.

    3. he skills necessary for higher education (Horstmanshof & Brownie, 2013), particularly as students are entering deg

The OERu's Learning in a Digital Age course was developed to respond to this need.

    1. zero-textbook-cost degrees

The zero-textbook cost degrees will save learners millions of dollars. The OERu takes this one step further by assembling full online courses based entirely on OER. Of interest, if you have studied at university before, how much money did you spend on average per year purchasing proprietary textbooks? In the past, have you decided not to purchase a prescribed text because it was too expensive?

    1. improve learning through teaching practices that are enabled by content that is freely available to copy, edit and share.

Thinking about what open can do that can't be easily be replicated using "closed" models is key - because this is the strategic point of difference for OER. This LiDA course is a good example - learners are encouraged to source open access materials in pursuit of their own interests rather than prescribing a closed textbook. Can you think of other examples that open enables?

    1. peer review process

LiDA is a tertiary education course and as such we place a high value on peer reviewed research. Its always a good idea to check the respective journal's review processes online. See for example the Peer Review Process for IRRODL: http://www.irrodl.org/index.php/irrodl/about/editorialPolicies#peerReviewProcess

    1. Digital literacies are not solely about technical proficiency

This is a key message - digital literacies are much more than digital skills. The concept is also culturally bounded taking into account the social norms of the respective communities. Can you think of any examples? Please share by replying to this annotation.
