City officials defend their record, saying some tree mortality is to be expected. Various studies of newly installed trees show that 7 percent to 11 percent die within two years of planting, depending on the location. “It’s not surprising in urban areas to see these mortality rates,” said Bram Gunther, chief of forestry, horticulture and the natural resources group at the Department of Parks and Recreation.

To address residents’ concerns, the city has introduced a number of programs. For buckling sidewalks, for instance, the city now does repairs in front of one- to three-family homes; in the past, it was the homeowner’s responsibility. Since starting a repair program several years ago, the city has received 38,300 requests, and it has addressed 9,169 so far. To prevent buckling in the first place, all new trees have considerably larger beds, allowing room for spreading roots. As for pruning, the city says it responds to all complaints about dead limbs or trees within 30 days; if the condition is deemed hazardous, the work will be performed immediately. The parks department, with the nonprofit group Trees New York, has stepped up its “citizen pruner” program, in which residents can become trained and certified to do limited pruning of street trees. The one limitation, however, is that citizen pruners must keep their feet on the ground, which prevents most work on taller trees.

“There is a bigger problem with why so many of these efforts have failed” to achieve mass adoption, said Brennan Novak, a user-interface designer who works on privacy tools. The challenge, Novak said, is to make decentralized alternatives that are as secure, convenient, and seductive as a Google account. “It’s a tricky thing to pin down,” he told me in an encrypted online chat. “But I believe the problem exists somewhere between the barrier to entry (user-interface design, technical difficulty to set up, and over-all user experience) versus the perceived value of the tool, as seen by Joe Public and Joe Amateur Techie.”

One solution, espoused by some programmers, is to make the Internet more like it used to be—less centralized and more distributed. Jacob Cook, a twenty-three-year-old student, is the brains behind ArkOS, a lightweight version of the free Linux operating system. It runs on the credit-card-sized Raspberry Pi, a thirty-five dollar microcomputer adored by teachers and tinkerers. It’s designed so that average users can create personal clouds to store data that they can access anywhere, without relying on a distant data center owned by Dropbox or Amazon. It’s sort of like buying and maintaining your own car to get around, rather than relying on privately owned taxis. Cook’s mission is to “make hosting a server as easy as using a desktop P.C. or a smartphone,” he said.
i think this is great!

The positioning template should not be a way of documenting your value proposition or approved messaging around features or value. Once you have your positioning figured out, this becomes a set of inputs to your messaging. I usually build a messaging document that references the positioning template. The messaging document goes a level deeper into approved messaging for value statements for different buyer personas and provides boilerplate messaging that can be used as a starting point for marketing and sales materials.

Engineers anticipated this convergence. As early as 1967, one of the key architects of the system for exchanging small packets of data that gave birth to the Internet, Paul Baran, predicted the rise of a centralized “computer utility” that would offer computing much the same way that power companies provide electricity. Today, that model is largely embodied by the information empires of Amazon, Google, and other cloud-computing companies. Like Baran anticipated, they offer us convenience at the expense of privacy.

One might expect job markets with low proportions of university graduates to quickly absorb new graduates. But in many developing countries, the reverse is true: employers doubt the job-readiness of graduates, and as a result unemployment levels are high. In India, for example, one survey of employers found that only7% of India’s engineering graduates (a field thought to develop good employment prospects) are job-ready. Skills found particularly lacking include English language skills and the ability to innovate by applying conceptual learning to real-world problems.23A major British Council study of the employability of African university graduates found that ‘employers across the region complain of a lack of basic, technical and transferable skills.’24 Uneven and often poor quality teaching, resulting from underqualified staff, large class sizes, and outdated teaching methods, are held responsible.

- Try to split up the different parts into different files when possible
- use the overview as a jumping board to other parts
- Use bigger titles for the sections - its sometimes hard to read because you could not use smaller titles at some points. Those titles were then as big as the text. (See the bottom for example)
- Use less gifs, as they take a LOOOOT of time to load and slow the page down remarkably.

Creating a New User
I think also here, the step by step description is enough, no need to show them with Gifs how to open up a new profile.
I would call it also "creating a new browser profile" "Creating a new user" confused even me and i know that we dont have user profiles in our extension :)
-
Now you are ready to hack! 😃 We recommend reading through the Code Overview to get an idea of how the extension works and also looking @ [Submitting Changes](Submitting Changes) before making any pull requests.
I dont think it is necessary to show a person with a GIF how to run an extension. A step by step process seems to be enough.
-
We encourage you to Merge your own branch if you have done testing, rebased, update docs and feel confident or if it is a very small change.
I dont think this is a good idea. Merging branches should be limited to the core team. we wont give write access to newbies.
-
Before making any significant changes we recommend creating a new branch, making a pull-request with your initial commit and adding a to-do list to help everyone be on board.
Before making ANY change actually, they should follow this process. Also i would add that we follow the readme driven development process: tom.preston-werner.com/2010/08/23/readme-driven-development.html
So people should lay out what they want to do and what their approach is to the community before making changes, this way we dont have unnecessary work on both sides.

I'd remove all this and instead link to a tag we give the corresponding issues, because It will be hell of a lot of work to keep this list up to date. Goes a bit like: https://github.com/WorldBrain/WebMemex/issues?q=is%3Aissue+is%3Aopen+label%3Aenhancement

Superintelligence (public library) by Nick Bostrom The clearest book I’ve come across that makes the case that the so-called “control problem” — the problem of building human-level and beyond artificial intelligence that we can control, that we can know in advance will converge with our interests — is a truly difficult and important task, because we will end up building this stuff by happenstance if we simply keep going in the direction we’re headed. Unless we can solve this problem in advance and have good reason to believe that the machines we are building are benign and their behavior predictable — even when they exceed us in intelligence a thousand-, a million-, or a billion-fold — this is going to be a catastrophic intrusion into our lives that we may not survive.

Here’s how it breaks out when you look at cumulative percentages:
-
Desktop: steady as she goes This is my rough model of how search distribution might look, generated by plugging figures we know into a Pareto generator and then doing a distribution function for N = integer number of searches per day. Here’s how it looks for the desktop, using a mode (most common) of 0.9 searches per day and mean of 1.23: Estimated profile of number of searches per day per person on Google on desktop. What this is saying is that on any given day you get about 55% of people doing just one search, a bit less than 15% doing two searches, just under 5% doing four searches, and so on. Small proportions, but big absolute numbers. And who does what searches isn’t fixed; so someone who did zero searches yesterday might do 10 tomorrow. But equally, the 10-searcher yesterday does none or one or four today. And so on.

GLP, whose stated mission is to “explore the intersection of DNA research, media and policy to disentangle science from ideology”, commonly aggregates news stories. But when they re-posted this particular article, the headline was changed pretty dramatically, to “WHO study finds thousands of illnesses linked annually to organic foods.” After some criticism in the comments, it was later changed to remove reference to a WHO study. There are a few things that really annoy me about this Western Producer article and the GLP headline. I initially expressed my annoyance with the headline on twitter, but I wanted to expand a little on this topic, because I fear this is becoming an all-to-regular occurrence.
