Reasons often do not always seem grounded in Jesus teachings and differ between communities - e.g. Didache refers to not fasting "with the hypocrites", fasting on 4th (Wed) and 6th (Fri) days rather than with the Jews who fasted on the 3rd (Tues) and 5th (Thurs) days. Later the reason for fasting on Friday would be tied more and more to the night of Jesus death and the Pasche/Easter fast would extend for 40 hours from Fri-Sun morning to cover the period He was in the tomb. Later again this was developed to cover 40 days excluding the intervening Lords Days and later again, these 40 days of fasting were extended to 40 actual days of fasting, interrupted by each Lords day.
Yet, the gnostic Marcion is reported to have fasted on Sabbath to spite the God of the Old Testament (because Jews do not fast on Shabbat) - obviously considering this contrary to normal practice or reasons for fasting by Christians. Yet later fasting on Sabbath was not considered an issue.
