    1. I would guess that what happened is that over time Nixon’s attacks came to seem shopworn and thin. Defending him became more of a burden than the cost of abandoning him.

This suggests that focusing on Trump's thin-skinned constant "poor me, I'm the most victimized POTUS ever" may help to reveal how tiresome it is.

    1. lie with impunity,

There's that word I keep looking for. It means that he has no fear of being called out or facing consequences. We must make him face the consequences. Lying to the FBI would be a start.

    1. Russia could use that detail to help identify the U.S. ally or intelligence capability involved. Officials said the capability could be useful for other purposes, possibly providing intelligence on Russia’s presence in Syria. Moscow would be keenly interested in identifying that source and perhaps disrupting it.

This shows how dangerous Trump is to our national security.

    2. Trump seemed to be boasting about his inside knowledge of the looming threat. “I get great intel. I have people brief me on great intel every day,” the president said, according to an official with knowledge of the exchange.

Consistent with his narcissism and grandiosity but also with his pathological insecurity.

    1. ‘Relational citizenship: Supporting embodied selfhood and relationality in dementia care’ develop this line of thinking by explicitly arguing for a notion of ‘embodied selfhood’.

Useful term but need a similar term for this in interpersonal relationships other than the professional/client/patient situation.

    2. fears have not diminished and may have prompted calls and means for voluntary euthanasia. This process appears to have occurred in parallel with what has been described as the ‘Alzheimerisation of ageing’. Reinforced by media reports of ‘institutional abuse’ in nursing homes, the intensified search for ‘a cure’, and the dire predictions of demographic apocalypse. The Alzheimerisation of ageing seems to contribute to the propagation of an associated and potentially negative ‘neuro-culture’ spread across the whole of society (Williams, Higgs & Katz, 2012).

Dementia and old age as part of negative neuro-culture'

    1. mental and psychological health.

His vocabulary is severely impoverished. With constant repetition of simple meaningless words, e.g., very, very, very, great, great, great. Much of what he said at the presser with PM Abe was senseless blather. He's covering up for a serious cognitive deficit.

    1. mentally healthy president

Malignant narcissism, cognitive impairment, no self-observing ego, no conscience, paranoia, hypomania. A mix of character disorder (which is set young and untreatable), organic brain disease, and mix of mental illnesses. Only the latter will lead to a breakdown.

    1. only cares about himself and those he views as extensions of himself,

He sees himself mirrored in those he supposedly admires. It's not that he "sees" them. He sees a copy (his preferred version) of himself. His appointment of "Mad Dog" Mattis is a case in point. He sees himself in him.

    2. I’ve unfortunately had a great deal of experience with it

I have as well. Both were my "bosses" in higher ed administration, one recently. It takes a certain amount of narcissism to seek powerful positions but "healthy" narcissism can help the leader when challenged. Malignant narcissism in a POTUS drives actions that will harm the country.

    1. I think that I would create new beats. The language beat, language watch. Understand that normal is going to drift and shift and all sorts of things are about to happen and part of our job is to notice and document how it's happening. We may not be able to influence the course of events, but our job is to at least be able to tell the story."

      Yes, Let's do it!

    1. And then the meeting continues without anyone blinking and saying, excuse me sir, nothing you just said makes any sense.

I imagine them staring with their mouths hung open.

    2. tremendous

Repetition of this inept term repeated 4 times. Also could be sign of cognitive decline. There is research on early changes in an author's writings, e.g., Agatha Christie & Iris Murdoch who developed AD much later. He has similar patterns of thought and speech.

    3. trying to make sense of his train of thought.

Yes, he expects others to do the work of trying to understand him. Unfortunately intelligent people used to working with complex ideas will tend to try to make sense of him.

    4. Trump’s stunning lack of mental competence

I do a lot of reading and writing about Alzheimer's and related disorders and I'm not sure if he is in the early stages or he is so severely character disordered that he cannot concentrate or think coherently. The latter is a lifelong condition that would explain lack of intellect.

    1. Imagine if Instructure, Dropbox, and Google hired more rogue humanities scholars. Imagine if we trained students of digital media and culture not just to criticize but to intervene in the development of emergent technologies.

      I could suggest some.

    1. He looks like a pumpkin having a nervous breakdown, talks like the words are being fired out of his mouth by a tennis ball launcher and has the general manner of an arrogant televangelist suspected of murder by Columbo. His approach to public speaking? “If in doubt, switch to your internal monologue.”

      Preach brother!
