    1. How will the future EMI payments be affected in case there is a pending amount to be paid after refund?# If there is a balance amount to be paid by customer, the remaining EMIs will be re-calculated basis the new principal amount, that is the Original amount - Refunded amount. In order to close the loan the customer has to pay the pending amount and only then it would be complete closure. However, this is a very rare case scenario.

This question is not clear. Should be rephrased and better if we can include an example.

I thought that the EMIs get cancelled if the order is cancelled and refunded to the customer (minus bank charges etc and interest paid).

    2. What will happen to EMI if I cancel the order?# If you cancel or return an order purchased on EMI using a credit or a debit card, an entire purchase amount will be refundedb to your card immediately and the EMI will be cancelled at the merchant's end. Any down-payment amount that you might have paid using your credit card will be refunded to you within 5-7 business days by Amazon. You will then need to contact your bank to confirm the cancellation at their end.

What happens to the EMIs if the customer cancels an order?

If your customer cancels or returns an order purchased using the Credit Card or Debit Card EMI option, the entire purchase amount is refunded to the customer's card immediately. The EMI is also cancelled at your (merchant) end. If the customer has paid any down-payment amount, it is refunded to the customer's card within 5-7 business days. The customers should contact their bank to confirm the EMI cancellation.

    3. What transaction will the end customer see in their account?# The Refund Amount that your end customer sees in their account will vary from bank to bank. However, there will be a record stating the Refund/Reversal amount for the payment towards EMI.

How can the customers track the EMI refund amount in their accounts?

For the EMI refund, a record is displayed in the customer's bank statement stating the Refund/Reversal amount for the payment towards EMI. The EMI amount refunded to your customer depends upon their bank based on the cancellation fee, processing fee or any other bank charges.

    4. Refunds via Cardless EMI# In case of order cancellation or rejection, if any EMI installments are paid, it will be refunded to the same payment mode/account that was originally used to make the transaction.Refer Cardless EMI section for more details.

      Cardless EMI Refund

Your customer purchases a product from your website or app using Cardless EMI option and requests for refund. Any EMI instalments paid by the customer is refunded to the same payment mode or account that was used to make the payment. Refer Cardless EMI section for more details.

    5. Refund via DC EMI# Your customer makes an online purchase from your website or app. In scenarios where your customer cancels or returns an order purchased on EMI using debit cards, only a full refund request can be raised.DC EMI does not support multiple partial refunds as order information or product details are not passed to the bank when processing EMI transactions. Hence, a full refund request must be raised, which is captured at the Razorpay Checkout. Razorpay team shares Recon file with the bank and the bank refunds as per the calculation. Refer Debit Card EMI section for more details. Note: The Interest will not be refunded. Refer following scenarios on how refund will be processed for a DC EMI. A cardholder purchases 3 products in a single payment via DC EMI. They cancel Product 1 within 5 days of purchase and again cancel Product 2 on the 7th day. Here, a partial refund will not be supported as there are multiple items/orders and razorpay does not provide order-level split to bank. A customer has bought two items - Item A worth ₹2000 and Item B worth ₹7000. In a 3-month EMI plan, they need to pay an EMI amount of ₹3100. After paying an installment for the first month, the customer returns Item A. In this case, for a DC EMI you cannot raise refund request for ₹2000. You will have to raise a refund request for an entire amount

      Debit Card EMI Refund

If your customer purchases a product from your website or app using Debit Cards EMI option and raises a refund request, only a Full Refund request can be raised.

Debit Card EMI does not support multiple Partial Refunds as order information, or product details are not sent to the bank processing the EMI payments. Razorpay team shares the reconciliation file with the bank, and the bank refunds the amount based on the calculations. Refer Debit Card EMI section for more details.

Note: The interest paid by the customer as part of the EMI payment cannot be refunded.

Refer to the following examples about how refund is processed for Debit Cards EMIs:

      • A customer purchases 3 products - Product A, B and C, in a single payment using the Debit Card EMI option. The customer cancels Product A within 5 days of purchase, and then cancels Product B on the 7th day. Here, a partial refund will not be supported as there are multiple items/orders, and Razorpay does not provide order-level split up to the bank. A Full Refund request can be raised with the bank for all the 3 products.

A customer buys 2 products, - Product A (₹2000) and Product B (₹7000). In a 3-month EMI plan, the customer needs to pay an EMI amount of ₹3100 (Total payment of ₹9300 in 3 months). After paying the first instalment, the customer returns Product A. In this case, for a Debit Card EMI option, you cannot raise a Partial Refund request for ₹2000. You will have to raise a Full Refund request for the entire amount of ₹9000. The interest of ₹100 that the customer paid as part of the first EMI instalment cannot be refunded.

    6. The bank calculates and refunds the amount, that is Min(₹X + Total Principal paid).

The bank refunds the amount, Min (Rs. X, Total Principal paid). <Please check if this is right)

      • If Rs. X = Total Principal Amount paid by the customer, it is Full Refund.
      • If Rs. X < Total Principal Amount paid by the customer, it is Partial Refund.
    7. Refund via No Cost EMIs# Your customer purchases a phone that costs ₹30,000. If the interest rate applied is 15% in a 3-month EMI plan, they are entitled to pay an interest amount of ₹4,500. However, in No Cost EMI scenario, they have to forego the discount and pay the original price, that is ₹30,000 in EMIs. The total price paid by yoiur customner gets divided into price paid to you and the balance that is, the discount amount is paid for the interest on the loan. Refer No Cost EMIs section for more details. Once a refund is initiated, Razorpay initially calculates the No Cost EMI amount value and shares it with the bank. The EMI value is calculated using a simple formula, that is A/N where: A = Price of the Product. N = Number of EMI installments. Note: The processing charges levied on availing the No Cost EMI scheme will not be refunded.

      No Cost EMI Refund

      Example

Your customer purchases a phone that costs ₹30,000. If the interest rate applied is 15% in a 3-month EMI plan, the customer should pay an interest amount of ₹4,500. However, in No Cost EMI scenario, the customer does not require to pay the interest and need to pay the original cost of ₹30,000 in EMIs. Refer No Cost EMIs section for more details.

After a refund request is raised, Razorpay calculates the No Cost EMI amount value and shares it with the bank. The EMI value is calculated using a simple formula, that is A/N where:

A = Price of the Product. N = Number of EMI instalments.

For the above example, the No Cost EMI= 30000/3= ₹10000.

Note: The processing charges levied by the bank for using the No Cost EMI option cannot be refunded to the customer.

    8. Refund via CC EMI# When a customer purchases an item using a credit card and then opts to cancel the item purchased, there can be two scenarios in case refund is processed: When an order is cancelled before an EMI is created by the card issuer: Your customer will be refunded with an entire purchase amount into their credit card account in case it is an immediate cancellation. When an order is cancelled after an EMI is created on the card: Your customer will be refunded with entire amount after the creation of EMIs as most credit card issuers will consider the EMI loan as pre-closed. Note: Depending on the card issuer and their terms and conditions, the interest or processing charges levied on availing the EMI may or may not be reversed. In case of partial refund, the principal amount will get adjusted. The interest, GST and other charges already levied by the bank will not get refunded. To cancel a Credit Card EMI, your customer must reach out to the bank. Refer Credit Card EMI section for more details.

      Credit Card EMI Refund

If a customer purchases a product on your website or app using Credit Card EMI option, and requests for refund, there can be following two scenarios in case the refund is processed:

      • When the refund is requested before an EMI is created on the card: Your customer receives a full refund of the amount paid using the credit card.
      • When the refund is requested after an EMI is created on the card: Your customer receives a full refund of the amount paid using the credit card as most of the credit card issuers will consider the EMI loan as pre-closed. Note:

      • Depending on the card issuer and their terms and conditions, the interest or processing charges levied for using the EMI option may or may not be reversed.

      • For Partial Refund requests, the principal amount gets adjusted. The interest, GST and other charges already levied by the bank do not get refunded. To cancel a Credit Card EMI, your customer should contact the credit card issuing bank. Refer Credit Card EMI section for more details.
