The white material is likely oxidation/corrosion specific to the metal on the piece. I'd guess potentially zinc oxidation. Duane has used lacquer thinner on stuff like this in the past with good results. (See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hDpTJ4NQGwk).

However for the material on the keys, you're likely to damage the plastic on them. For this part you could spot test some vinegar as a means of removing the oxidation without damaging the keytops. Try it out on one key to see how well it works. If it helps, you can remove the keytops individually. (See: https://youtu.be/XRm0VH42y1s?si=P0D1L9bm8uMRSJDC&t=867) I might also try a thin/skinny brass bristle brush either before, or in combination. See another occurrence at https://reddit.com/r/typewriters/comments/1x2drma/olympia_sm2_restoration/ where kizeer reported success at my method by saying:

Thanks for the links! I started to remove the key caps and soak them in vinegar and brush the rest off which seemed to work fine. Just having some issues to remove the first row of key caps (1,2,3,..). I guess I need to remove the case/housing first.

    1. Ezra’s slightly mad typewriter-cleaning cocktail! After experimenting with various cleaners, this has become one of my favorites for grimy painted metal and bare metal parts: roughly 75% Simple Green, with the remaining 25% divided between isopropyl alcohol, white vinegar and lemon juice.

With caveats, this is what Ezra Rosensaft uses for external typewriter cleaning using modest amounts on a clean damp cloth.

    1. i got a hermes 3000

Sarah treated the internal felt of her typewriter by spraying it down with white distilled vinegar. This kills any living molds, etc. Vodka is also good for removing scents on typewriters (and vintage bags).

The variable line spacer is inside the platen of a Hermes 3000.

The carriage of the H3K comes off with the removal of two bolts.

For rust removal Sarah starts with a wire brush then does PB Blaster for more.

      Replace rusted springs.

Fingernail polish for a H3K:<br /> - Sally Hansen Insta-Dry line "Time is Money" (discontinued?) - Expressie Essie quick dry "In the Modem" (closest in her opinion) - Sinful Colors Eucalypta - Blank Beauty (color match to Hermes Ambassador) - Orly (meh, too green)

      The case doesn't remove intuitively.

    1. Aluminum Foil Method: Tear off a small piece of aluminum foil and dip it in water or vinegar. Rub the rust spots gently with the foil. Aluminum is softer than chrome and will not scratch the surface while effectively removing rust. As you rub, the foil reacts with the rust, helping to dissolve it. Steel Wool Method (Use with Caution): If the rust is more severe, use fine steel wool (#0000 grade) to gently scrub the rusty areas. Be careful not to press too hard, as steel wool can scratch chrome if applied too aggressively.

Suggestions for removing rust from chrome on typewriters and typewriter cases.
