I agree that these games can have symbolic resonance, but they are not stories in themselves (or at least not particularly interesting stories) unless the players impose a story on the game. Narrative games that allow for role playing or playing a role allow us to perform or enact another's story in ways that build fellow feeling or increase understanding.
