    1. This would exploit the compressive strength of stone, which can be greater than that of concrete, combined with post-tensioning by stainless steel rods.

for - sustainable building - stone age 2.0 - stone for compression - post-tensioned steel rods for tension

    1. This concentric, circular structure is the reason, that for its weight, wood is still the strongest building material on the planet.

for - trees are stronger than steel

biomimicry - trees - (see below)

    1. watched Tinderbox Meetup 2023-12-03 featuring Jorge Arango

Attendees: Mark Bernstein, Michael Becker, Jorge Arango,

      Introductions: Rolf Huber (Information Architect)

      Featured

      • many different definitions of notes (types...)
      • Damien Newman scribble drawing as a representation or diagram of the design process (22:42)
      • 2x2 grid matrix of evergreen versus transient and mnemonic versus generative.(27:00)
      • contacts, recipes, book highlights and marginalia in the mnemonic/evergreen quadrant; to do lists, grocery list, appointments in the mnemonic/transient quadrant; sticky notes, mind maps, project plans, tinderbox in the generative/transient quadrant; knowledge gardens, zettelkasten, pkm systems in the generative/evergreen;

      • What does the structure of containers in each of these spaces look like? How simple or complex are they?

      • There can be growth from one space into others, (especially from the mnemonic into generative).

      • Chuck Wade mentions that email fits into all four of the quadrants.

      • Cathy Marshall used "information gardening" in Xerox Park setting... (source?) It may have been mentioned in Arango's interview of Mark Bernstein on The Informed Life.

Arango came to knowledge gardening via Brian Eno essay on architecture and gardening metaphor.

      Three Rules of Knowledge Gardening

      1. Make short notes; create enough context to help out your future self
      2. Connect your notes
      3. Nurture your notes; revisit, build, feedback

        • ‘General stone’ - 0.079kg carbon per kg .
        • Concrete - 0.15kg carbon per kg and
        • Steel - 2.8kg carbon per kg.

Phyllis Diller's gag file appears to have been made of 16 standard three-drawer beige Steelmaster (Art Steel Company, Inc.) index card files which were stacked in two columns and enclosed in a matching beige external frame which was mounted on casters. Having overflowed the 48 available drawers, there was an additional 3-drawer file added on top as an expansion.

The Smithsonian dates the files from 1962 to 1994, but perhaps the digitized version can be searched by date to determine the actual earliest and latest dates on included cards as most had at least a month and a year.

This Catalog has a page with the various sizes of card catalog boxes available from Cole Steel in 1950s. The external sizes can be useful for placing the individual card sizes for some of these boxes on the secondary market.

They also include approximate card capacities.

    1. shelving in my work area at home, which holds my audio equipment, hundreds ofmusic CDs, and piles of musical scores, is not mere heavy-gauge industrial shelving;it’s scaffolding equipment, strong enough for painters to stand on when they’reworking on the exterior of a house. In other words, the shelves are built for hardwork. That’s a personal aesthetic choice. I want everything around me, from mydancers to my dances to my shelves, to be strong and built to last

I like cardboard file boxes for a bunch of reasons, all willfully idiosyncratic. The

Twyla Tharp's creative note taking system not only entails notes and ideas in boxes, but extends physically to a heavy-gauge industrial shelving which also holds her other tools for work including her "audio equipment, hundreds of music CDs, and piles of musical scores".

    1. ascending an escalator in a department store was moving in a space entirely captured and formedby industrialism

If it weren't for industrialism they would just be there in that space without the ability that these developments have given them. Holiday gift shopping would be such a different experience in downtown Chicago if elevators didn't exist.. I honestly think people would spend less because they wouldn't want to climb the stairs to additional stores to "just see what's in there".
