    1. protesilaos • 5y ago Dired is fantastic! To add a bit to what the previous user documented: Mark some files with m and hit k to temporarily remove them from your view (g to refresh and bring them back). When no mark is active, m will mark everything. t toggles the mark. So you can, e.g., mark three files, toggle the mark, then k, to just limit the list to those three. Marking can be done with regular expressions. Hit % C-h inside a Dired buffer to list all commands at your disposal. Also try * C-h for more relevant commands. w copies a file's name. 0 w (C-u 0 w) copies the full path. Works with multiple marked items as well, separating them with a space. You can run keyboard macros that move between a Dired window and another buffer. So you could, e.g. copy filesystem paths, edit them accordingly, and move to the next step (and kmacros are a powerhouse in their own right). Use Z to compress or uncompress. With Q you can query-replace (regexp) through all the marked files. Remember that in a query prompt ! means "yes to all". With ! in Dired you can run any shell command on the marked files. With & you run the command in the background (same as in the terminal emulator). dired-jump will take you to the directory that contains the current buffer. From inside Dired, it will move up a directory. find-name-dired will produce a Dired buffer while using the CLI find command. Combine that with all the aforementioned possibilities. Same principle for find-grep-dired. I probably forgot several of them. No worries: C-h m will produce a help buffer with information about the major mode you are in, as well as all minor modes that are active.
    1. Flash storage is prone to failure if power is cut while writing or modifying stored data. Basically because an SD card or SSD is a tiny computer that writes files and updates its map of file locations. If this is interrupted, bad things result. When this happens to storage-only, you can repair the file system and usually come away ok. When it happens to the boot drive, the system can be un-bootable. Also other failures can suddenly cause SD card failure, but the most common is power interruption during file writes. The system drive is frequently updated for normal operating system tasks, making a power loss event more like russian roulette for data loss. Tl;dr you may wish to have a periodic task and a separate flash drive whose only role is to sit idle, then get a copy of any files changed recently. Rsync is a great tool to do so in the Linux/raspberry pi world. This way the really expensive part of your work is preserved, even if your system's SD card fails.

    1. Save this question. Show activity on this post. I'm from South East Asia, and in here, it's very common to use "kindly" as a written polite request to other people, and I often see it on the internet as well. But I've just discovered that from this website, "kindly" is regarded as a "low-brow, patronizing, and overly sensitive". Other people are recommending that you use the word "kindly". Please, never use the word "kindly" when interacting with Americans. In the view of Americans, only English-speaking Indians use this word. It comes across as low-brow, patronizing, and overly sensitive. Oh wow, I never know that. But coming from a non native western background and culture, I have nobody here I can crosscheck information with. Maybe someone here with the appropriate culture background knowledge can give some insight? Is this a general view, or just a partial view of Americans about this word? Should I stop using this word from now on, or I just overly worried over nothing? Thanks.

      TIL

I didn't know that most people (outside of Asia) consider "kindly" to be patronizing. The many quirks of language!

    1. seven pillars are seven dimensions of who you are that form the basis of friendship through homophily, which is the tendency for like to associate with like. “Birds of a feather flock together.” Our friends are very similar to us.

    1. J'en atteste les temps; j'en appelle à tout âge; I of them attest the times; I of them appeal to all age; I display the times; I appeal to the age Jamais au public avantage Never to the public advantages The public never has the advantage L'homme n'a franchement sacrifié ses droits; The man not has clearly sacrificed his rights; Certainly, mankind has not sacrificed his rights; S'il osait de son cœur n'écouter que la voix, If he dared of his heart not to hear but that the voice, If mankind dared but to listen to the voice of his heart, Changeant tout à coup de langage, changing all at a blow of language, changing suddenly the language, Il nous dirait, comme l'hôte des bois: He to us would say, as the host of the woods: He would say to us, as he would to the animals of the woods: La nature n'a fait ni serviteur ni maître; The nature not has made neither servant nor master; Nature created neither servant nor master; Je ne veux ni donner ni recevoir de lois. I not see neither to give nor receive of law. I seek neither to rule nor to serve. Et ses mains ourdiraient les entrailles du prêtre, And his hands would weave the entrails of the priest, And his hands would weave the entrails of the priest, Au défaut d'un cordon pour étrangler les rois. To the lack of a cord for to strangle the kings. For the lack of a cord with which to strangle kings. Without the original text and the interlinear text, one has as my approximate translation of Diderot: I display the times; I appeal to the age The public is never advantaged Certainly, mankind has not sacrificed his rights; If mankind dared but to listen to the voice of his heart, changing suddenly the language, He would say to us, as he would to the animals of the woods: Nature created neither servant nor master; I seek neither to rule nor to serve. And his hands would weave the entrails of the priest, For the lack of a cord with which to strangle kings. A similar sentiment is attributed to Jean Meslier (1664–1729), but, as of yet, I have no citation for it: "Je voudrais, et ce sera le dernier et le plus ardent de mes souhaits, je voudrais que le dernier des rois fût étranglé avec les boyaux du dernier prêtre."

    1. The entire point of writing short-ish, single-idea notes—so-called "atomic notes"—is because it’s easier to connect a single idea to many other single-ideas, then it is to connect a complex idea to other complex ideas. We do this, not to gain insight or make meaningful connections, but to write more. Writing is the place where insight is finally crystallized. So, for people who want to write a lot and very often and very regularly, having hundreds of connected ideas to pull from on a weekly basis is a huge win!

Atomic notes are not for making connections, but to facilitate more writing

    1. communication partners

super interesting that Luhmann referred to his zettelkasten as a communication partner explicitly himself.

also interesting given AI models are easier to train now with several models already open sourced which allows actual interaction with your notes! would love to see where it goes.

Postgrad Med J. 2007 Aug; 83(982): 507–508. Can sexual abuse during childhood lead to the later development of psychotic illnesses?
