key insight
- Elites are necessary in every society
- Historically, people who strongly believe that the current elites aren't necessary or are harmful often become the revolutionaries who become the new elites
- elites need to speak in their own specialist language to each other but there are two kinds of elites
- those who serve society
- those who serve themselves
- often, we have fox in sheep's clothing - elites who serve themselves but disguise themselves in the language of elites who serve others in order to gain access to power ,
- we normally think of wealthy people as elites, but Harari classifies scientists as also a kind of elite
- elites may be necessary but
- We are caught in a double bind, a wicked problem as elites are also the world's greatest per capita energy consumers and their outsized ecological, consumption and energy footprint is now a existential threat to the survival of our species

being able to recognize a double bind is wonderful it's a really good thing to know how to do 01:16:29 um like I said it won't solve it for you but it will keep it from tearing you in half and that's something yeah so generally you have to do a jump 01:16:40 or come from another context the response to double bind is never on either side of the bind like never which is so hard in a culture that is 01:16:54 completely committed to linear strategic change making and solving if the if the solution looks nothing like the problem

the double bind was an evolutionary principle an evolutionary principle 00:36:26 so that every organism at some point right every organism is in relationship to all these other organisms and all those organisms are always changing a little bit 00:36:40 and so one day the moment comes when that organism cannot do what it used to do to survive if it does what it knows how to do it dies 00:36:54 but it doesn't know how to do anything else

the definition of a double bind is that you have a a problem a bind 00:35:07 in one context and you can't actually solve it in that context because it's caught in another context and so you can't solve it in that 00:35:20 context because it's caught in these other contexts

definition: double bind
- the definition of a double bind is that you have a problem (a bind) in one context and you can't actually solve it in that context because it's caught in another context
- Gregory Bateson defined the double bind as an evolutionary trait of species due to their changing nature.
- Since individuals of a species are constantly changing, there comes a day when all that it knows what to do in order to survive is outdated due to the changing environment. When it repeats the old behavior that served its survival in the past, it dies.

- progress traps are related to double binds because in a progress trap, an implemented solution to a problem in one context gives rise to a new problem in another context.
- the original problem (bind) in one context appears to be resolvable but actual isn't. Future unfolding of the implemented solution unfold a future unexpected problem.
- The two problems are not simultaneously occurring as in a double bind, but time-delayed
- both double bind and progress traps emerge from the same root of violating holism
- in not grasping the implications of the emptiness of phenomena, we ignore intertwingled nature of reality, we circumvent Indra's meet of jewels at our own peril

the mechanism ofdouble bind described by Gregory Bateson et al. [35 ] as a pattern of communication
!- examples : double bind * When one thinks a little, one finds many such double bind situations in life such as: * Persons in positions of responsibility who have access to more resources than they have ability to afford, creating temptation to steal Marrying out of sense of duty instead of love * Challenges identifying with gender identity - LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (or sometimes questioning), and others. The "plus" represents other sexual identities including pansexual and Two-Spirit) * Conformity bias - sensing injustice of certain social norms propagated by your own ingroup but feeling peer pressure to conform
-
All moral codes, all prescribed ways ofliving, all social arrangements do involve to a degree such targeting. Certain behaviours, desires, oreven thoughts are simply unacceptable, will be punished, or at least strongly discouraged. While someof such prohibitions are official and overt and thus can be related to and evaluated, others remainonly tacit and below the threshold of consciousness.
!- effects : double bind * When we are caught in a double bind, the effects can manifest explicitly and overtly or be subtle and tacit such as behaviors of boredom, frustration, loneliness, unfulfilled, desperation, etc. * the resulting emotional tension is unhealthy
-
select from its intrinsic desires, ideas and dispositions those that may fit into theperceivable societal contours—and to choose what to do with the remains that do not fit.
!- in other words : double bind * try to fit societal contours and adapt remaining behaviors that do not fit
-
The sharp boundary created by thesplitting of thoughts and disowning those which threaten to disrupt the personware seems thento be an intelligible choice.
!- insight : double bind confronted with personal survival, the person is forced to choose the personware * The cost of disrupting it is perceived as too high

Oh, I just figured out a workaround for my project, in case it helps someone. If you want the source of truth on the prop to come from the child component, then leave it undefined in the parent. Then, you can make the reactive variable have a condition on the presence of that variable. eg: <script> let prop; $: prop && console.log(prop); </script> <Child bind:prop/> Might not work for every use case but maybe that helps someone.

the bloody mount points. I couldn't believe that when I realised what was going on. I got the wire brush and dettol out and scraped it off my drive. Never, ever again.
-
It won't work if $HOME is not under /home. Really. Not even if you softlink. You need a bind mount
-
Plus, have you seen how many loopback mounting points it creates? "df" becomes very hard to use as it buries your actual drives with it's own. One for the daemon, one for GTK, one for Gnome, one for each of the snaps you have installed....
-
By design, snap apps have no access to /etc. They live in their own little world, but instead of a normal chroot, they are splatted all over the standard Linux filesystem layout. With other bits mounted hither and thither. Its a mess, and subject to change with each release.
-
A bind mount is basically where you mount a given directory on top of an existing one. Suppose you have a RAID array where you have a partition mounted at /home2, containing some larger user accounts. If you wanted to remount /home2/user to /home/user (to sidestep issue #1), without the issues that come along with symlinks (it is not a directory, just a token that points to it), you'd do something like mount --bind /home2/bob /home/bob and the directory will then be traversable from both locations. The target folder must exist, same as any mount point. The end result is somewhat similar to a symlink, but instead of creating a special filesystem object, it utilizes the operating system's filesystem mounting machinery to do it, which makes it more transparent to running software. Tools like 'du' and 'find' will still be aware that they are cross filesystem boundaries, and will also behave as such if the bind mount is entirely within a given filesystem. Finally, as they're transient by nature (unlike symlinks), they need to be placed in fstab or some startup script to make them persistent.

Binding In a nutshell, the purpose of this is to update the variable programmatically or when the DOM element/components updates it.

Interesting, I guess it still does binding (like with bind:prop) even for on:event ...
