      • Abstract

        • The use of machine learning (ML) based techniques has become increasingly popular in the field of bioacoustics over the last years.
        • Fundamental requirements for the successful application of ML based techniques are curated, agreed upon, high-quality datasets and benchmark tasks to be learned on a given dataset.
        • However, the field of bioacoustics so far lacks such public benchmarks which cover multiple tasks and species to measure the performance of ML techniques in a controlled and standardized way and that allows for benchmarking newly proposed techniques to existing ones.
        • Here, we propose BEANS (the BEnchmark of ANimal Sounds), a collection of bioacoustics tasks and public datasets, specifically designed to measure the performance of machine learning algorithms in the field of bioacoustics.
        • The benchmark proposed here consists of two common tasks in bioacoustics:
          • classification and
          • detection.
        • It includes 12 datasets covering various species, including
          • birds,
          • land and marine mammals,
          • anurans, and insects.
        • In addition to the datasets, we also present the performance of a set of standard ML methods as the baseline for task performance.

    1. They cause completely different behavior for auto margins. If you have a fixed element for example with top/bottom/left/right set to zero and you stick an image in it you want to center wrapped in a div, then in order to center that div with auto margins, you MUST specify a CSS width/height, because specifying an HTML attribute width/height has no effect and the margins remain zero. I have no idea why the difference exists.
    2. Whether to specify in html or css is best judged on individual circumstances. A large number of images of the same size would probably be best served with css, a single image with html. That said, if you are specifying other styles for the image (border colour, style or radius, float etc) it would make sense to add width & height to the css.

    1. I'd instinctively associate a this.cache() inside preload with the preloaded data only -- meaning no matter what crazy thing I did inside preload, the returned data would be cached locally, where local means either the client or server.

      I’m imaging the sound/volume/rhythm of this, and I think it’d be really interesting as to how authors write sound. I remembering reading in The Moonstone a lot of Sergeant Cuff singing “The Last Rose of Summer”, but I don’t remember any individual notes being written…this says a lot about Laura and the effect it has on her and the attention she’s paying to the music maybe?

      This is interesting too. That our own speech and sounds provides us with a level of comfort.

      This is a very interesting idea that we can only hear the sounds of our own speech

      What about in the instance where an animal, such as a dog, makes sounds which humans interpret? For instance, I am thinking of a dog whining for more water if its dish is empty or growling at the sight of danger.
