Lovins’ later book, Reinventing Fire,48 has a fawning Foreword writtenby the President of Shell Oil Company, which is not surprising since Lovins had adjusted hisgraphs so that fossil fuel phaseout was moved to 2050

For 1955, Chrysler Corporation introduced an exciting new direction in automotive styling. They called it "The Forward Look"- a sleeker, sharper, jet-age inspired approach, far removed from anything else Detroit had yet put into showrooms. The Forward Look was the brainchild of Virgil Exner, Chrysler's VP of Design.

forward
the prow that breaks the water,
is the way that you are moving,
eyes front and ever outward,
to-ward and fro-ward and on-ward,
breaking past one's own wards,
a sally forth,
abstracting, subtracting, and contracting,
well along with the calving of one's work,
ardent, zealous, eager, precocious and presumptuous,
dynamiting all that stands before you
in your way,
working your way,
unhorsed and forward
through the shards and chips and dust.

Local development and testing has huge advantages, but sometimes one needs to test web applications against their real-world domain name. Editing /etc/hosts is a pain however, and error prone. Node Foreman can start up an HTTP forward proxy which your browser can route requests through. The forward proxy will intercept requests based on domain name, and route them to the local application.

The rule is written @forward "<url>". It loads the module at the given URL just like @use, but it makes the public members of the loaded module available to users of your module as though they were defined directly in your module. Those members aren’t available in your module, though—if you want that, you’ll need to write a @use rule as well.
Just like how you have to also import (@use) a JS module if you want to use it locally, even if you export (@forward) it.

In brief, @import is being replaced with more explicit @use and @forward rules. Over the next few years Sass @import will be deprecated, and then removed.

Linux Memory Management at Scale
"we had to build a complete and compliant operating system in order to perform resource control reliably"
epic real-talk. the only people on the planet who seemed to have tamed linux for workloads. controlling memory. taming io. being on the bleeding edge, it turns out, is almost entirely about forward-progress. what can we reclaim?

“Working backwards” from customer needs can be contrasted with a “skills-forward” approach where existing skills and competencies are used to drive business opportunities. The skills-forward approach says, “We are really good at X. What else can we do with X?” That’s a useful and rewarding business approach. However, if used exclusively, the company employing it will never be driven to develop fresh skills.
This reminds me of the Product Management interview task of coming up with a new product. You can start with a SWOT analysis, but then you'd be missing out on thinking from the customer's point of view.
Bezos calls the former the skills-forward approach, and the latter the working backwards approach.

The RBI would conduct dollar-rupee buy/sell swap auction of $5 billion for a three-year tenor on March 26. “In order to meet the durable liquidity needs of the system, the Reserve Bank has decided to augment its liquidity management toolkit and inject rupee liquidity for longer duration through long-term foreign exchange buy/sell swap,” the central bank said in a statement on Wednesday. “The U.S. dollar amount mobilised through this auction would also reflect in RBI’s foreign exchange reserves for the tenor of the swap while also reflecting in RBI’s forward liabilities,” it added.

Whether or not you take a constructivist view of education, feedback on performance is inevitably seen as a crucial component of the process. However, experience shows that students (and academic staff) often struggle with feedback, which all too often fails to translate into feed-forward actions leading to educational gains. Problems get worse as student cohort sizes increase. By building on the well-established principle of separating marks from feedback and by using a social network approach to amplify peer discussion of assessed tasks, this paper describes an efficient system for interactive student feedback. Although the majority of students remain passive recipients in this system, they are still exposed to deeper reflection on assessed tasks than in traditional one-to-one feedback processes.

To quote from the NIH data-sharing policy guidelines: "...sharing data reinforces open scientific inquiry, encourages diversity of analysis and opinion, promotes new research, makes possible the testing of new or alternative hypotheses and methods of analysis, supports studies on data collection methods and measurement, facilitates the education of new researchers, enables the exploration of topics not envisioned by the initial investigators, and permits the creation of new datasets when data from multiple sources are combined".
For some examples that show this to be true, see our updated commentary: http://www.nature.com/neuro/journal/v17/n11/full/nn.3838.html
