Pulakeshin claimed the splendid title of Parameshvara, Paramount Lord. Lata and the northern Deccan were his. He now turned his attention to the rest of India south of the Narmada.

In addition to local intelligence and favourable terrain, Pulakeshin had access to the tanks of the ancient world. Elephants. These deadly creatures possessed the mass and sheer shock value needed to break almost any immobile enemy formation sent against them.

But in 618, to punish Pulakeshin for his audacious move on southern Gujarat, Harsha had to cross the Narmada river into the Deccan — which tilted the odds in Pulakeshin’s favour. With his control over the northern Deccan solidified by his of economic and political integration, Pulakeshin could now scout out Harsha’s route of attack and contest the northern emperor’s attempts to cross the great river. Even if Harsha’s larger were to cross the Narmada, this unwieldy force of infantry, cavalry and elephants had to enter the thickly forested Vindhya foothills in order to capture or defeat Pulakeshin — negating their advantage in numbers.

Harsha must have watched with growing surprise and interest as his audacious rival survived every challenge thrown at him, but the invasion of Lata must have been the last straw. Matalan, a Brahmin and a friend of Kovalan, functions like the chorus in Greek tragedy. He appears in two cantos, the Madurai Kantam and Vanchi Kantam, and provides the link to all the events that happen offstage. In Adaikalakathai (chapter on refuge), we come to know of all the noble qualities possessed by Kovalan, courtesy Matalan.

Like Fate in Greek tragedies, Destiny plays a significant role in Silappadikaram. As Ilango says, it announces itself in the yaazh (harp) that Kovalan plays, leading to his separation from Madhavi the courtesan and his subsequent death in Madurai, the Pandyan capital. Again, it is Destiny that visits the tongue of the Pandya king who, instead of saying ‘Bring the culprit, inquire, and if he is the one who stole the queen’s anklet, then kill him,’ blabbers without thinking, ‘Kill him if he has the anklet and bring it to me’.

Silappadikaram means ‘The Story of the Anklet’, silambu being the anklet worn by young, unmarried Tamil girls in ancient times that was removed on their wedding day. So silambu is a metaphor for virginity and innocence, which later became the insignia of the pathni cult (the worship of chastity).

Normcore A term made well-known in 2013 by trend-watching marketing/consulting outfit, K-Hole, normcore is a deliberate effort by people who have a non-mainstream identity to adopt the fashion sensibilities of “normal” people. What’s so noteworthy about wearing basic clothing? It is quietly, radically metamodern in that it emphasizes relationality, the ability to connect to one’s own and other people’s inner experience, over externally focused preoccupations with cultural groups and with categorical identities that seek to differentiate one from others.

Hyper-self-reflexivity, indicates an intensified looking back upon the self. The “self” may be the author, the reader/viewer, the work itself, or even the genre or medium that the work is part of. Self-reflexivity is not unique to metamodernism; it is also an important part of postmodern work but it functions differently in the two epistemes. I’ll use “self-reflexivity” as the name for the postmodern phenomenon and hyper-self-reflexivity for the metamodern version. Allow me to explain the difference.

Eshelman’s double frame conceives of an outer frame and an inner frame locked together. The outer frame is a world story imbued with enough fantasy elements that the reader is forced to make a choice to buy into all of it, if they are going to commit to engaging the work. It’s basically the same idea as Jesse Thorn’s New Sincerity, though not temporally bound. (“New Sincerity” implies that it comes at a certain point in history, and also that it’s a sort of a movement, which it is, in the literary world.) Ironesty is irony/sarcasm/sardonicness/snark employed in the service of making an earnest point, or expressing a heart-felt emotion. It’s kind of a way of saying “Hey I get that what I’m about to say is kind of corny, but…” and then truly caring about the thing that comes after the “but.” Or it’s a way of delivering a humorous, clever ironic message, but softening it with a “Don’t worry … we’re not too cool for you, we have sincere feelings just like you.”

Another method that originated in the postmodern episteme but takes a different tack in metamodernism is pastiche. Pastiche is the juxtaposing of seemingly disparate elements, from historically separated genres and/or cultures. As one way to frame it, in the context of metamodernism, pastiche is potentially constructive, whereas under postmodernism it was dissociative. Dissociative pastiche pitted elements against each other, with results that were usually amusingly absurd, in order to call into question the unexamined premises of each. Constructive (metamodern) pastiche, on the other hand, combines disparate elements in order to build a space inhabited by a felt experience that is not at home in either element on its own. And/or maybe this: constructive pastiche allows a work of art to bring into it the kinds of cultural combinations that people experience in real life, in spite of conventional divisions between them

The Epic (metamodern maximalism) The Epic is a rebellion against postmodernism’s tendency to shame ebullient, unabashed self expression. I’m talking about extravagant performances, lush musical arrangements, cautionless embrace of technology, over-the-top sexuality, excesses that don’t stop at just being provocative, but engage grandiose, hero-filled storytelling. Metamodernism gives us permission for all of these things, but again, not toward a randomness or anarchic or destructive impulse. The Epic is metamodernism’s version of maximalism. Of course, metamodern work will often include The Epic and The Tiny, side-by-side in the same work, and that is, itself, an example of oscillation.

Metamodernism inherits minimalism as a possible method from both modernism and postmodernism, but puts it towards a somewhat different purpose. Where modernist work employs minimalism in order to reveal the underlying structures of things, and postmodern work employs minimalism to undercut modernism’s penchant for grand narratives and its tendency to preach more/newer/better/faster/bigger in all things, metamodern artworks use what I’m calling The Tiny in order to create vulnerability and intimacy, bringing the reader of a work closer to the felt experience expressed in the work.

quirky offers an alternative to the Irony vs. Earnestness schism by presenting characters who are, we might say, heroically weird. Who, through their own eccentricity, reveal something simultaneously outside of the norm and universal that gives access to the kind of vulnerability that everybody experiences. In a sense, as we see it, quirky can be thought of as a particular sort of double frame that encloses a single character instead of an entire narrative. The eccentricity is the outer frame, which, with its adamant irreducibility, prevents irony from dissolving the inner frame, which is the character’s emotional truth, or felt experience.

metamodern oscillation involves a movement between — as I said — modernist qualities and postmodern qualities, or at least between oppositional pairs of emotional or aesthetic qualities, not opposing political or intellectual positions.

Oscillation is a way of engaging two oppositional factors without them cancelling each other out, nor landing in the average zone between them. Overall, metamodernism can be understood to revive the positivistic aspects of modernism while retaining postmodernism’s awareness of context and irony, via oscillation.

the central motivation of metamodernism is to protect interior, subjective Felt Experience from the ironic distance of postmodernism, the scientific reductionism of modernism, and the pre-personal inertia of tradition.

“nutshell” summary of the epistemes (tradition, modernism and postmodernism) that metamodernism emerges from. While each episteme emphasizes qualities or motivations that fulfill some sort of human or ontological purpose, each also has inherent limitations that, when exposed, set the stage for the emergence of the next episteme, which arises as people seek ways to untangle themselves from the previous episteme’s confines.

ஆனால் புனைவின் வாசகன் வளர்ந்துகொண்டிருப்பான். ஆகவே அவன் நிலையாக இருக்க மாட்டான். அவனைப் பற்றி புனைவல்லாதவற்றை வாசிப்பதாகச் சொல்லிக்கொள்பவர்கள் முன்வைக்கும் குற்றச்சாட்டே அவன் உறுதியாக இல்லாமல் ‘அலைபாய்ந்துகொண்டிருக்கிறான்’ ‘குழப்பவாதியாக இருக்கிறான்’ என்பதாகவே இருக்கும். அதாவது அவர்கள் தங்களைப்போல மூளை உறைந்த விசுவாசநிலையை புனைவு வாசகனிடம் எதிர்பார்க்கிறார்கள். இயல்பாக பேசினாலே தெரியும், ஒரு நல்ல புனைவுவாசகன் புனைவல்லாதவற்றை மட்டும் படிப்பேன் என்பவனை விட மிகப்பலமடங்கு நுண்ணிய அவதானிப்புகளும் சுயமான சிந்தனைகளும் கொண்டவனாக இருப்பான். ஆனால் அதை உணருமளவுக்கு அந்த புனைவல்லாதவற்றின் வாசகர்களுக்கு நுண்ண்ணுணர்வு இருப்பதில்லை. அவர்களின் விசுவாசம் அவர்களை ஐம்புலன்களும் முற்றாக மூடப்பட்டவர்களாக ஆக்கியிருக்கும்.

கட்டுரைநூல்களில் அந்நூலாசிரியர் உருவாக்க எண்ணும் கருத்துக்கு தேவையானவை மட்டுமே சொல்லப்பட்டிருக்கும். புனைவு அப்படிச் செயல்பட முடியாது.அதில் முக்கியமானவை என ஏதும் இல்லை. ஒரு சூழலைச் சொல்ல, ஒர் உணர்வைச் சொல்ல அது ‘எல்லாவற்றையும்’ சொல்லித்தான் ஆகவேண்டும். ஆசிரியர் அந்தக் கற்பனைக்குள் செல்லும்போது தன்னிச்சையாக எல்லாமே உள்ளே வந்து பதிவாகும். உணர்வுகள் இயல்பாகவே வந்து நிறையும். ஆகவே சின்னவிஷயங்கள், விளிம்புவிஷயங்கள், எதிர்மறை அம்சங்கள் எல்லாம் புனைவில் நிறைந்திருக்கும். ஆசிரியன் பொருட்படுத்துவன மட்டுமல்ல அவனால் பொருட்படுத்தாதவை கூட புனைவில் இருக்கும்.

அவருக்கென இருப்பது அவருடைய அனுபவங்கள் மட்டுமே. அந்த அக- புற அனுபவங்களில் இருந்து அவர் நேரடியாக அடைவனவே அவருக்குரியவை. அவற்றை அளவுகோலாகக் கொண்டுதான் அவர் எல்லாவற்றையும் மதிப்பிட்டு தனக்கான முடிவுகளை அடையமுடியும். அத்தனைபேரும் இயல்பாகச் செய்வது அதைத்தான். ஆனால் எவராக இருந்தாலும் ஒருவரின் அனுபவம் என்பது மிகமிக எல்லைக்குட்பட்டது. அதைக்கொண்டு அனைத்தையும் புரிந்துகொள்ளுமளவுக்கு ஆழ்ந்த அறிதல்களை அடையமுடியாது. அதற்குத்தான் புனைவுகளை வாசிப்பது உதவுகிறது.அவை நாம் அடைந்த அனுபவங்களை கற்பனையில் விரிவாக மீண்டும் அனுபவிக்க உதவுகின்றன. உதாரணமாக, நான் குமரிமாவட்ட வாழ்க்கையையும் தர்மபுரி மாவட்ட வாழ்க்கையையும் மட்டுமே அறிந்தவன். ஆனால் தேவிபாரதியின் நாவல்கள் வழியாக என்னால் ஈரோடு மாவட்ட வாழ்க்கைக்குள் செல்லமுடியும். கண்மணி குணசேகரன் வழியாக விழுப்புரம் வட்டார வாழ்க்கைக்குள் செல்லமுடியும். கீரனூர் ஜாகீர்ராஜா வழியாக இஸ்லாமிய வாழ்க்கைக்குள்ச் செல்லமுடியும். புனைவுகளினூடாக தமிழகம் முழுக்க வாழ்ந்த அனுபவத்தை நான் அடையமுடியும். அவ்வாசிப்பு எனக்கு உண்மையில் வாழ்ந்த அனுபவத்துக்கு நிகரான அறிதல்களை அளிக்கமுடியும்.

புனைவுகளை வாசிக்காதவர்கள், புனைவல்லாதவற்றை மட்டுமே வாசிப்பவர்கள் பெரும்பாலும் ஏதேனும் கருத்துக்களின் அடிமைகளாக இருப்பதைக் காண்கிறோம். அவர்களுக்குச் சுயசிந்தனை மிக அரிதாகவே இருக்கும். நூல்களால் ஆட்கொள்ளப்பட்டு, நூல்களை திருப்பிச்சொல்லும் கருத்தடிமைகள் அவர்கள். காரணம் இதுதான், கருத்துக்களும் செய்திகளும் அவர்களை நோக்கி மலைமலையாக கொட்டப்படுகின்றன. அக்கருத்துக்களை திறன்மிக்க நிபுணர்கள் தேர்ந்த தர்க்க ஒழுங்குடன் அளிக்கிறார்கள். அவர்களுக்கு அந்த கருத்துக்கள் வழியாக அதிகாரத்தை உருவாக்கிக்கொள்ளும் நோக்கம் உள்ளது.ஆகவே அவர்கள் மிகுந்த விசையுடன் செயல்படுகிறார்கள்.அக்கருத்துக்களை மட்டும் வாசிப்பவர்களுக்கு அவற்றை மதிப்பிடுவதற்குரிய சுயமான அளவுகோல்கள் ஏதும் இல்லை. ஆகவே முற்றான அடிமைத்தனமே எஞ்சுகிறது.

பெரும்பாலான துறைசார் நூல்களில் நாம் வெறும் கருத்தேற்பாளர்களாகவே இருக்கிறோம். நம்மையறியாமலேயே நாம் நம் தரப்பை அந்நூல்களை ஒட்டி உருவாக்கிக் கொள்கிறோம். அவ்வாறன்றி உண்மையை நோக்கிச் செல்லவேண்டும் என்றால் அத்துறைசார் நூல்களிலேயே எல்லா தரப்பையும் வாசிக்கவேண்டும். அவ்வாறு எத்தனை துறைகளை ஒருவரால் வாசிக்க முடியும்? அப்படியென்றால் அவர் தனக்கான உண்மையை அறிவது எப்படி? எப்படி தன் நிலைபாட்டை அவர் எடுக்கமுடியும்?

அங்கும் செய்திகளில் எது முக்கியம், எது தேவையில்லை என்னும் தெரிவு அதை அளிப்பவரிடம் உள்ளது.செய்திகளை அடுக்குவது அந்த ஆசிரியரிடம் உள்ளது.  பெரும்பாலான செய்தித்தொகுப்புகள் மிக மறைமுகமாக வலுவான கருத்துநிலையை முன்வைப்பவை. 2000 ஆண்டு நிறைவின்போது இரண்டாயிரமாண்டின் வரலாற்று நிகழ்வுகளைப்பற்றி லண்டன் டைம்ஸின் செய்திச்சுருக்கம் ஒன்றை மலையாள மனோரமா இயர்புக்குக்காக மொழிபெயர்த்தேன். வெறும் செய்திகள், தேதிகள். வேறெந்த கருத்தும் இல்லை. ஆனால் அதில் பிரிட்டனில் ஓர் ஆர்ச்ப்பிஷப் பதவியேற்பது ஒரு செய்தி. சீனாவில் ஓர் அரசவம்சம் முடிவுக்கு வருவதுதான் செய்தி.

புனைவிலக்கியம் அல்லாதவை அனைத்துமே தர்க்கத்தின் மொழியில் அமைந்தவை. நாம் அவற்றை நோக்கி நம் தர்க்கத்தையே திருப்பி வைக்கிறோம். அங்கே நிகழ்வது தர்க்கபூர்வமான ஓர் உரையாடல். அந்த நூலாசிரியர் மிகச்சாதகமான நிலையில் இருக்கிறார். அவர் தன் துறையின் நிபுணராக இருப்பார். தன்னுடைய தர்க்கத்தை முன்னரும் பலமுறை முன்வைத்து, பலவகையான எதிர்வினைகளைக் கண்டு பழகி, தேர்ச்சி பெற்றவராக இருப்பார். அவருக்கு தன் தர்க்கங்களை ஒட்டுமொத்தமாகத் தொகுத்து சீராக முன்வைக்கும் வாய்ப்பை அந்நூல் வழங்குகிறது. பலசமயம் தேர்ந்த நூல்தொகுப்பாளர்கள் இணைந்து அந்த நூலை பழுதகற்றி அமைத்திருப்பார்கள். அந்நூலின்முன் வாசகன் கிட்டத்தட்ட நிராயுதபாணியாக நிற்கிறான். அவனும் அத்துறையில் அதேயளவு நிபுணன் அல்ல என்றால் அவன் அங்கே தோற்கும் தரப்புதான்.நீங்கள் இதை நடைமுறையில் பார்க்கலாம். சேப்பியன்ஸ் நூலை வாசிக்கும் ஒருவாசகர் மிக எளிதாக யுவால் நோவா ஹராரியின் பார்வைக்கு அடிமையாவார். அதைப்பற்றியே பேசிக்கொண்டிருப்பார். புனைவல்லா நூலின் வாசகர்கள் அப்படி சில நூல்களையே விதந்தோதிக்கொண்டிருப்பதைக் காணலாம். அப்படி அன்றி அந்நூலால் ஆட்கொள்ளப்படாதவர் இருந்தார் என்றால் அவர் அந்நூலுக்கு எதிரான சிந்தனைகளால் ஏற்கனவே ஆட்கொள்ளப்பட்டவராக இருப்பார். மார்க்ஸியர் சேப்பியன்ஸ் நூலை மூர்க்கமாக ஒற்றைப்படையாக மறுப்பார்கள். அது இன்னும் மோசமான அடிமைநிலை.

புனைவிலக்கியத்தை வாசிப்பவர் புனைவை அது என்ன என்று தெரிந்து, அதன் நுட்பங்களை உணர்ந்து, அறியும் திறமைகொள்கிறார். புனைவிலக்கியத்தை வாசிக்காதவர் அவரை அறியாமலேயே புனைவை விழுங்கி உள்ளத்தில் நிறைத்துக்கொண்டிருக்கிறார்.

புனைவு இல்லாமல் எவராலும் வாழமுடியாது. புனைவை வாசிக்காதவர்கள் என தங்களைச் சொல்லிக்கொள்பவர்கள் கூட புனைவுகளில்தான் பெரும்பாலும் புழங்கிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள். இந்த உலகில் மிகப்பெரிய அளவில் உற்பத்தி செய்யப்படுவது புனைவுதான். சினிமாக்கள், டிவி சீரியல்கள், பொழுதுபோக்கு எழுத்துக்கள், இலக்கியங்கள் என புனைவுகள் பெருகிச்சூழ்ந்துள்ளன.

பண்பாட்டுநினைவுகள் ஒன்றுசேர்க்கப்பட்டு ஒரே ஒழுக்காக

புனைவுகள் வழியாகவே வாழ்க்கை தொகுக்கப்படுகிறது. ஒவ்வொரு சமூகமும் தன்னுடைய வாழ்க்கையை புனைவுகளாக சொல்லியும் எழுதியும் தொகுத்துக்கொண்டே இருக்கிறது.

சரியான வாசிப்பு என்பது புனைவும் புனைவல்லாதவையும் இணைந்து உருவாகும் ஒரு வெளி. புனைவல்லா நூல்கள் நமக்குச் செய்திகளையும் பார்வைகளையும் அளிக்கின்றன. புனைவு நமக்கு அனுபவங்களை அளித்து அவற்றினூடாக நம் அறிதல்திறனை வளர்க்கிறது. இவை ஒன்றையொன்று நிரப்பிக்கொள்ளவேண்டியவை

முழுமைநோக்கு என்பதே ஆழ்நோக்கும்கூட. அதுவே ஆன்மிகம் என்று சொல்லப்படுகிறது.

மனிதர்கள் சிந்தனைகளால் வாழ்வதில்லை, உணர்ச்சிகளால்தான் வாழ்கிறார்கள். அரசியலையும் அன்றாடவாழ்க்கையையும் வணிகத்தையுமேகூட உணர்ச்சிகளே தீர்மானிக்கின்றன. புனைவிலக்கியவாசிப்பே இல்லாதவர்கள் வெறுமே கருத்துக்களையாக கக்கிக்கொண்டிருப்பதை, அக்கருத்துக்களின் அடிப்படையில் எல்லாவற்றையும் எளிமையாக்கி புரிந்துகொள்வதை காணலாம். அவர்களால் தங்கள் உணர்வுகளை, பிறர் உணர்வுகளை, சமூக உணர்வுகளை புரிந்துகொள்ள முடியாது. இது அவர்களுக்கு ஒரு மூர்க்கமான அணுகுமுறையை, ஒருவகையான பிடிவாதத்தை உருவாக்கிவிட்டிருக்கும்

இந்த தொடர்ச்சுழல் வழியாகவே நம் உள்ளத்தின் அடிப்படை அலகுகளான ஆழ்படிமங்கள், தொன்மங்கள், படிமங்கள் உருவாகின்றன. அவற்றைக்கொண்டே நாம் சிந்திக்கிறோம். நம் உணர்ச்சிகளை வெளிப்படுத்துகிறோம். ஒருவர் இலக்கியம் படிக்காவிட்டாலும் இந்த சுழற்சியில்தான் இருக்கிறார். ஆனால் புனைவிலக்கியம் வாசிப்பவர் இது எப்படி நிகழ்கிறது என்னும் தெளிவை அடைகிறார். ஆகவே தன் உணர்ச்சிகளையும், அவ்வுணர்ச்சிகள் உருவாகும் விதத்தையும் அவர் அறியமுடியும்.

இடதுசாரி அமைப்புகளுக்குள் இளைஞர்களைக் கொண்டுவருவதற்கான வழியாக அவர்களுக்கு முதலில் கார்க்கியின் ‘தாய்’ போன்ற நாவல்களை வாசிக்க கொடுப்பதும், அவர்கள் வாசிக்க ஆரம்பித்ததும் மேற்கொண்டு எளிய கொள்கைவிளக்கப் பிரச்சார நூல்களை அளிப்பதும் வழக்கம். அதன்பின் படிக்கவிடமாட்டார்கள். “கதையா படிக்கிறீங்க?”என்று இளக்காரத்துடன் கேட்கும் தோழர்களைச்

புனைவிலக்கியமே சமகாலத்து உணர்ச்சிகளை உருவாக்குகிறது. அதை அறிய புனைவிலக்கியத்தை வாசித்தாகவேண்டும். புனைவிலக்கியம் செயல்படும் விதமென்ன என்பது இன்று ஆய்வாளர்களால் விரிவாகவே பேசப்பட்டுவிட்டது. புனைவிலக்கியம் எழுத்தில் இருந்து பேச்சுக்குச் செல்கிறது. நிகழ்த்துகலையாகிறது. மக்கள் நினைவில் தொன்மம் ஆகிறது. தொன்மம் மீண்டும் இலக்கியமாகி விரிவடைகிறது. சிலப்பதிகாரக்கதை தமிழ் மக்களிடையே வாய்மொழிக்கதையாக இருந்தது. சிலப்பதிகாரமாக ஆகியது. மீண்டும் கதையாகி, தொன்மம் ஆகியது. அத்தொன்மம் மீண்டும் நவீன இலக்கியமாக ஆகியது

ஒருவர் நவீன இலக்கியம் வாசிக்காதவராக இருக்கலாம். ஆனால் அவர் ஒரு சமூகத்தில் பிறந்து, ஒரு மொழியில் வாழும்போதே கதைகளாக அந்த நினைவுத்தொகுதி அவரை வந்தடைந்துவிடுகிறது. அதுவே அவருடைய உள்ளத்தை உருவாக்குகிறது. அவர் சிந்திப்பதும் கனவுகாண்பதுமெல்லாம் அதைக்கொண்டுதான். சாமானியர்களுக்கு அது ஓர் எல்லையில் நின்றுவிடுகிறது. இலக்கிய வாசிப்பு என்பது அதை தொடர்ந்து பயின்றுகொண்டே இருப்பது. அவ்வளவுதான் வேறுபாடு,

உலக சிந்தனை வரலாற்றை எடுத்துப் பார்த்தால் இதுவரையில் எழுதப்பட்டு தலைமுறை தலைமுறையாக கைமாற்றப்பட்டு நீடிக்கும் பெரும்பாலான படைப்புகள் புனைவுகளே.

புனைவுகள் உண்மைகளைச் சொல்வதில்லை. அவை ஒருவரின் கற்பனைகளைச் சொல்கின்றன. உண்மைகளைச் சொல்லும் புனைவல்லாத நூல்களும், உண்மைகளை அறியும் வழிகளைக் கற்பிக்கும் கொள்கைநூல்களும்தான் வாசிக்கவேண்டியவை. வாசிப்புப்பழக்கம் உருவாவது வரை புனைவுகளை வாசிக்கலாம். வாசிக்க ஆரம்பித்த பிறகு நிறுத்திவிடவேண்டும்”

மரபுக் கவிதைகளின் இலக்கணச் சட்டகங்கள் வார்த்தைகளின் விரயங்களுக்குக் காரணமாக இருப்பதைச் சொன்னார். இரண்டு அடிகளும் ஏழு வார்த்தைகளுமே கொண்ட திருக்குறளில்கூட, வார்த்தைகள் அவசியமற்று நிரப்பப்பட்டிருக்கிறது என்றார். ‘செல்வத்துள் செல்வம் செவிச்செல்வம் அச்செல்வம் / செல்வத்துள் எல்லாம் தலை’ என்ற குறளில் செல்வத்துள் செல்வம் செவிச்செல்வம் என்ற முதல் மூன்று வார்த்தைகளிலேயே முடிந்துவிடும் பாடுபொருள், எப்படி அவசியமற்று நீள்கிறது என்று சுட்டிக்காட்டினார்.

சிரித்த முகத்துடன் பக்கத்தில் உட்காரச் சொன்னார். “இவ்வளவு குறைந்த வயதாயிருக்கும் என்று எதிர்பார்க்கவில்லை” என்றார். நான் பதற்றத்துடனேயே இருந்தேன். பெங்களூர் செல்லும் ரயில் வர இன்னும் இரண்டு மணி நேரத்துக்கு மேலிருப்பதாகவும், ரயில்வே ஸ்டேஷனில் அமர்ந்திருப்பது பிடிக்குமென்றும், அதனாலேயே அறையைக் காலிசெய்துவிட்டு அங்கு வந்துவிட்டதாகவும் சொன்னார்

இனம்புரியா உணர்வுகள் ஒன்றையொன்று மேவிய மனநிலையோடு சென்று அவரைப் பார்த்தேன்.

The term was coined by Gred Dember. As you probably guessed, it’s a mix of irony and honesty. He defines it as “the braiding together of irony and sincerity (honesty) in a unified aesthetic expression.” He gives the example of shows such as Modern Family and Community. I’m a huge fan of Modern Family, and I can tell what he means by ironesty, basically irony or sarcasm used in the service of expressing a sincere emotion or making an earnest point. This show is a great example of the pendulum we mentioned before, oscillating between love and harshness, deep caring and selfishness—just as most of us humans do.

I use pastiche to mean artworks that combine stylistic elements from differing genres. Like, say, combining country music and hip-hop in the same song. In postmodern work, that sort of pastiche serves to poke fun at each genre, by pitting the two genres against each other. I use the term destructive pastiche for that. In metamodern / constructive pastiche, it serves to sort of create a “bigger space” where the two (or more) genres kind of lean against each other like tent poles, holding up a structure that allows a kind of feeling that wouldn’t otherwise be expressible.”

You may have heard about the term before, which trended in 2013. Normcore is a deliberate effort by people with non-mainstream styles to adopt the fashion style of what they deem “normal” people, mainly in the form of wearing basic closing. So what’s metamodern about this trend? Well, normcore is all about overcoming external differences to better connect on a deeper level. When Jimmy Fallon stated that he decided to wear suits when he took over The Tonight Show because that would be the normal thing to do, it was a deeply metamodern thing to do. Not modern (“wear something new!”), nor postmodern (“who cares!”) but metamodern (“mainstream fashion is a fashion statement”).

Vlogging. This shared self-reflection method mixes the personal and the plural, the mundane and the artistic. It’s not trying to make History per se, but it can end up reaching and influencing millions of people, giving birth to communities in the process. Vlogging is stuck between nonchalance and caring, superficiality and affect. Will it end up in History classes? Probably not. Does it mean you should not do it?

Memes. Yes, memes are metamodernist! At least the process of creating your own memes. Taking a screenshot from a movie and adding captions that create a whole new meaning is a metamodernist approach to the creation process.

Remixes. Many of the most popular songs these past fifteen years are actually covers. Lana Del Rey’s “Doin’ Time” is a cover of the 1996 Sublime hit. “Moon River” by Frank Ocean first appeared in the 1961 film Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, you name it—everyone has released at least one cover song or a remix of someone else’s track. The transparent balance between the old and the contemporary to create a brand new whole is profoundly metamodernist.

While most of the Internet population is passive, metamodernism is not to be confused with pseudo-modernism. British scholar Alan Kirby stated: “In pseudo-modernism one phones, clicks, presses, surfs, chooses, moves, downloads.” Instead, metamodernism is about genuine connection, empathy, and community. While modernism is about creating something completely new (which you could argue is an illusion); postmodernism is about deconstructing the past and rejecting the future; pseudo-modernism is about mindless online consumerism—metamodernism is about creating something new with what was created before, while acknowledging the inherent ephemerality of the human condition.

I find the simple association of metamodernism with the Age of the Internet quite limited. Instead, I think metamodernism would be better associated with the Age of the Online Creator.

A common image used to describe metamodernism is that of a pendulum, constantly oscillating between creation and destruction, hope and doubt, optimism and realism. When talking about metamodernism in comparison with modernism and postmodernism, Fabio Vittorini described it as “a pendulum-like motion between the naive and/or fanatic idealism of the former and the skeptical and/or apathetic pragmatism of the latter.”

Post-postmodernism is not the cultural philosophy that followed modernism and postmodernism. Instead, it’s the collective search for what should come next; a quest for a more balanced world-view which would take into account the optimism of modernism and the pluralism of postmodernism.
