    1. engineers and product people just hate working on features “sold” by the sales department without asking them in an effort to meet objectives for bonuses.

Allmost all corporations isolate sales from development, and that's a root cause of the decline (see Microsoft's dissapointing software products, eg. Teams).

    2. A leader is best when people barely know he exists, when his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will say: we did it ourselves. (Lao Tzu)

No rulers allowed without a good excuse.

    3. The idea that agile is bordering on micromanagement is not a new one. Mike Cohn

Mike Cohn (author of the linked page, already annotated as important) is one of the contributors to the Scrum software development method.

    1. It's all about micromanagement. Almost every principle and practice of agile is there to support micromanagement. The daily scrum is about micro-managing the team's daily work plans and making sure that everyone is doing what they say they'll do. Continuous integration is put in place so that the minute some developer screws up and breaks a build, it becomes known. Pair programming is about making sure that programmers don't lose focus, don't goldplate, don't work on only the fun stuff, and that they clean things up. Ah, but who is it that is doing this micromanagement? It's the team. Yes, agile is about micromanagment, but it's about the team micromanaging themselves and for their own benefit.

Reason why Agile == Micromanagement(!!) BUT performed by the devs themselves.

    1. You can also check out the video below to see how the structure comes together in GitLab. Read more about Agile at GitLab See more information about our Agile delivery solution Build your Agile roadmap in GitLab

Good read & video on PM with GitLab.

    1. The teams that have worked well are teams where the engineers make decisions about process collectively, and decisions don’t get forced down upon them.

How Agile does not become micromanagement? Devs take over.

    1. The most significant problem of a code review is asynchronous ping-pong of quite difficult questions/answers. This is inefficient, but also makes people frustrated.

Indeed it's disheartening to await for a code-review.

    2. A session means there is a one driver — one who types/clicks, and one navigator — navigator tells the driver what to do. The 2 other team members keeps attention, and only when the navigator goes in a wrong direction, then interrupts. Navigator navigates for 3 minutes — really, just 3 minutes, and then rotate.

Nice terminology for mob-programming: - Friver (the programmer - Navigator (feature owner)

    1. At Buurtzorg, all new team members take a course called Solution-Driven Methods of Interaction, learning sophisticated listening and communication skills, techniques for running meetings and making decisions, and methods of coaching one another and providing perspective. You might assume that all this is managed through staff functions — the source of capability and power in many Orange and Green organizations. But Buurtzorg’s 9,000 nurses are supported by fewer than 50 staff people. The nurses do their own recruiting and purchasing, contracting for specialized medical or legal expertise when needed.

Instead of PM staff, train the workers!

    1. How to reveal if developers are micromanaged? Ask the following. How do you handle bugs? Do you handle these as a team or an individual solves them? What’s your on-call policy? Do you have one?Do developers feel in control of the tasks? Do you have clear task scopes?

Nice Qs no2 to the interviewer (and to the team members!).

    2. What can you use to find out fake agile practices?Ask the following questions:How do you handle bugs? Are bugs resolved as a team or an individual handles them? How often do you release software? What’s your release cadence?Do you have a product owner, scrum masters? How is communication to the client done? What’s your code review process? How many required approvals do you have? What’s the last comment you left on a code review? What’s your take on tech debt? How would you classify tech debt?Tell me more about testing practices. Do you use Sonar or other static analysis tools? Do you use integration, unit tests? Do you have a dedicated team of testers? How do you handle issues? Do you have an issue tracker?

Nice Qs no1 to the interviewer (and to the team members!).

    1. User-centered design (UCD) is an iterative design process in which designers focus on the users and their needs in each phase of the design process. In UCD, design teams involve users throughout the design process via a variety of research and design techniques, to create highly usable and accessible products for them.

    1. a very experienced programmer who installs an excessively large stack of frameworks and then expects new developers to be experts in all of them.

That's my fault that i'm trying to remedy by limiting what new libraries our devs bring back daily.

    1. n a self-managing, purpose-driven organization, change can come from any person who senses that change is needed. This is how change has occurred in nature for millions of years. Innovation doesn’t happen centrally, according to plan, but at the edges, when some organism senses a change in the environment and experiments to find an appropriate response.

We should starve to listen (& satisfy) each workers desires bc they are at the "edge" of the business, sensing the problems far better than the PM-staff, isolates at the "center" of the team.

    2. Other companies look five years ahead and make plans for the next year. They prefer to think like farmers: Look 20 years ahead, and plan only for the next day.

What a nice metaphor of a sound way to do business.

After the first time you use the Create/Update Chargebee Customer option to update a particular Chargebee Customer, updating it thereafter overwrites the customer record in Chargebee with the new inputs from the Salesforce account even if it is more recent than that in the Salesforce account.

    1. unbiased

The Republican party will never stop claiming the media is bias, so I am surprised they are claiming they have resolved this issue. I would think they would want to keep acknowledging it as an issue.

    1. "The President has been regulating to death a free market economy" - it's interesting how much this preamble throws Trump under the bus

    2. "our enemies no longer fear us and our friends no long trust us" - I guess the democrats and republicans agree on this.

    3. "This platform is optimistic because the American people are optimistic." This is completely unsupported by everything stated before it.

    4. "covenant" "Creator" "God-given natural resources" "prepared to deal with evil in the world" show religious tone

    1. Friends and foes alike neither admire nor fear President Trump’s leadership

I feel like there are countries who fear his leadership.

    2. The challenges before us—the worst public health crisis in a century, the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression, the worst period of global upheaval in a generation, the urgent global crisis posed by climate change, the intolerable racial injustice that still stains the fabric of our nation—will test America’s character like never before.

I know that we are making history but it doesn't exactly feel like it. The election feels like a joke. There is a stark difference between what came out of Roosevelt's mouth and either of the presidential candidates mouth's. Now it is a matter of choosing the lesser of two evils than a heroic leader to help our country achieve greatness.

    3. a more perfect union

I feel like this goal has been abandoned.

    1. So how should we think about federalism in the ageof coronavirus? The answer is to emphasize theimportance of building social solidarity — the beliefin a shared fate for all Americans that transcendsstate or regional identities

What makes Americans not have a social solidarity?

    2. institutional antagonism willprevent the concentration of power, encouragesindividualist mentalities that lead to self-interestedactions and erode national unity.

What makes Americans so individualistic? What is different about Taiwan’s society that made their people more selfless?

    1. “We’re changing federalism from the idea of shared expertise in different policy areas into partisan stakes in the ground that are meant to obstruct opponents,” Robertson says.

This is so true with the Trump Administrations "Alternative Facts" it is as though we will soon be living in the dystopian novel Brave New World.

    2. “The coronavirus response is actually sort of a perfect measuring stick of our transition to our contemporary, very polarized model of federalism.”

I want to reference the Netflix documentary Social Dilemma. The documentary says that the reason politics has become so polarized is because of social media. Everyone is operating off of a different set of facts.

    3. He has threatened to withhold federal funds from school districts that don’t open for in-person instruction.

Is it within Trump's right to do this?

    4. He has threatened to withhold federal funds from school districts that don’t open for in-person instruction.

Is it within trump's rights to do this?

    1. It could create incentives for action by conditioning a portion of funds going to states in any future relief packages on states’ adherence to the measures

Why did this not happen? I feel like it isn’t the federalist system in general that are failing us— it’s the leaders of the system. Why did congress not make a playbook and create incentives for states to follow them? This reminds me of how the drinking age became 21 in every state from the funding of the highways.

    2. Lacking strong federal leadership to guide a uniform response, the United States quickly fulfilled the World Health Organization’s prediction that it would become the new epicenter of Covid-19.

I wonder if a democrat was in office when covid hit if we would have stronger federal leadership. Would we have been in a state of emergency if someone who believed in the facts of science wasn’t in office? I have trouble believing that there is nothing the president could have done to prevent covid from getting this out of hand.

    3. subject to constitutionally protected individual rights such as due process, equal protection, and freedom of travel and association

I didn’t know that it is within our rights to travel and associate with whomever we choose. I wouldn’t think the government would be able to control who would be able to leave their house or hang out with who anyway. I guess this shows how right the article about uninformed citizens we read last week is right.

    4. Strong, decisive national action is therefore imperative.

I could not agree with this statement more. I think if the US had some kind of national healthcare program the coronavirus would be much more under control.

    1. The advantages of this plan are, greater security against fire & infection; tranquillity & comfort to the Professors, and their families thus insulated; retirement to the Students, and the admission of enlargement to any degree to which the institution may extend in future times.

The initial layout of the foundation having such an emphasis on the durability and flexibility of central grounds promotes the fact that Jefferson visioned his university prospering through many generations into the far future. His confidence in the success of the University of Virginia is clearly felt through this excerpt.
