    1. Participants were asked to listen to 40 short English speech samples, half of which contained grammatical errors against articles (e.g., a/an, the).

Only grammatical articles of English (the, a/an) are used for measurement in this study. While valid, it's a rather small (though important) subset of grammar. (note using Hypothesis)

    1. In fact, noise doesn’t just cause hearing loss; it can reveal it

This is an important revelation. Noisy situations can highlight someone's hearing loss when they've tried to hide it.

    2. Whether they struggle to hear because of an audiological condition or an acoustically unfriendly classroom space, the effort a teacher expends to hear can cause fatigue, frustration, or a lack of concentration. Studies have shown that such effects can cause people who struggle to hear to withdraw socially, which can negatively impact mental health.

Hearing loss and mental health are so interconnected that sometimes it is difficult to seperate the two.

    1. Some people believed I argued that object orientation is bad simply because extends has problems, as if the two concepts are equivalent. That's certainly not what I thought I said, so let me clarify some meta-issues.

      first sighting: meta-issue

    1. If you think you’ve conveyed something but the other person hears something completely different, is that their fault or yours?
    2. From my perspective the onus is on you to consider not just the words coming out of your mouth, but how they are received.
    3. Everyone has their own background and context that they overlay on top of what they hear. It’s our jobs as communicators to consider that perspective and to adjust the way we communicate accordingly. If we do, we stand a better chance of persuading them to agree with our point of view.
    1. People often hear what they think should be said, not the words that are actually spoken. This comes from the tendency of people to think faster than they talk. A listener makes assumptions about what they expect because their minds race ahead. This can be especially problematic when you misinterpret what your boss said.

    1. Hearing is something most everyone does without even trying. It is a physiological response to sound waves moving through the air at up to 760 miles per hour

Imagine the difficulty humans face just distinguishing one sound from another out of the myriad sounds constantly attacking our ears.

    1. every time we try to do something, within the system … it doesn’t seem to work for us, as Indian people

Chief Jim Antoine was the Chief of the Liidlii Kue First Nation. At this time he had been Chief of these people for a year. The Liidlii Kue people had a lot of issues with the white people and the way they treated their land and treated the Liidii Kue people. The Liidii Kue people were against the pipeline and they tried to follow appropriate measures to make their voices heard. Chief Jim Antoine would speak out about the issues the Liidlii Kue people felt passionate about. Due to the racial tensions in Simpson, the tension was often taken out on Chief Antoine every time he spoke out. Because of Chief Antoine’s efforts the nonnatives attacked him for attempting to speak out on behalf of his people. The Liidlii Kue people are so frustrated with their efforts to be heard, being shut down, that they were at the point where Chief Antoine was ready to work on changing the system in order to create respect for the Liidlii Kue people on their land.

    1. find new audiences-es

I like this idea of finding a new audience, rather than converting an old one. This seems to imply that the a rhetor is not necessarily obligated to sway those who are opposed to the very fact of their speech. Instead, they can simply find a new form and a new audience to "get a hearing," since that's apparently a phrase now. I mean, it seems a little idealistic, but less likely to expose the rhetor to violence.

    1. he public sphere has become drmnatically more open to the rhetoric or women and minorities, whose practices, coming from struggles lo get a hearing, have materially marked contem-porary rhetoric

Again that phrase "to get a hearing." What does this mean, in context? I feel like I'm missing something important about this super-weird phraseology.

    2. to gain a hearing for themselves.

This is a really strange phrasing. Does this just mean "to gain an audience"? Are they trying to imply something else? "A hearing" seems to imply a trial of some sort.

    1. So, you must arrive at a conviction, and a willingness to commit to that conviction, which allows you to abandon reason for the apparently unreasonable. It is because what we are doing at this moment, you and I, does not compute with your preexisting conditioning that it seems unreasonable and impractical, and will seem so if you do not stay in touch with the unjustifiable claim that I am making—that you and I are together, actively and consciously together, to the degree that you are Hearing me, in the Fourth dimension, in the Kingdom of Heaven, in the middle of Reality, and that it is only by means of this connection and your embrace of the ability to conceive of your being Here with me that you can break through your “amnesia.”
    2. The divine faculties of Conscious Being, which you could call Hearing, Seeing, Tasting, Smelling, et cetera, the direct comprehending of Reality, could be called the vital signs. And right now the one vital sign that is functioning is Hearing. And it is a result of Listening. And that will give you a clue, because if you want to see, then you must look! And how do you look? Well, you want to see. You don’t want to see something in particular, because you don’t know what there is to see. But you want to see. And the “wanting” is the “looking.” And the seeing is what comes, just as Listening brings forth Hearing.
