      • summary

        • SONEC offers a framework for relocalization of the economy but it will require very careful planning to create the right conditions for the emergence of local wellbeing economies.
        • One of the leverage points is the cosmolocal nature of SONEC, allowing the rapid, global sharing of good and best practices
        • This will be important because if SONEC is to reach its potential to awaken the sleeping giant of citizens to drive the necessary changes to mitigate the worst of the current existential polylcrisis, we will need a global synchronization of collective action at the local level.

      • summary

        • Mark gives a tour of his work at his company, Communittecture in applying permaculture principles to redesign communities in urban environments.
        • The central focus is designing based on commons principles of actually creating lived environments where healthy socialization is a primary design objective.
        • The design involves creating common areas that residents can share, from common food gardens to many mini-parks and recreation areas where families can gather.
        • The modern community has alienated socialization, creating groups of juxtapositioned strangers. There are two different design categories:
          • retrofitting existing neighborhoods
          • designing greenfield new neighborhoods

    1. have no or very low energy and transportation bills.

This can be structurally accomplished by reimagining community to have a local center of gravity. Redistribution of economic activity to where we live will dramatically reduce the need for high energy transportation.

Another scalable strategy is to shift from cars to velomobiles for short distance trips. In a car culture, even short trips require high energy transportation vehicles. Instead, replace these short trips with either public transport, walkable neighborhoods or velomobiles with very low weight and high mileage electric or other non polluting propulsion systems.

    1. Mike: Yeah. Marijuana. I feel like some people don't classify it as a drug, but at the same time, when you're depressed or when you're going through stuff, it really affects you. It affects every decision that you make. And, of course, everybody—I've tried drugs, I'm not going to say exactly which one, but I've experimented.Mike: I've never really liked it though. I don't like to be high because I used to fight a lot. I would always see that when I would smoke, I would always get beat up. This is an everyday thing fighting, because you have to. You are in the wrong hood, you're wearing the wrong color, you're going to get beat up.

    1. Not until later. I switched schools and then I was bullied at my other school. In this school, I think the school that I went into at first was extremely about academia. If you said the word “shoot,” it was a very, very bad word. I had never heard a bad word in my life [Chuckles]. When I moved schools, the new school that I got to was a lot higher. It was in a different area. We moved. My grandparents bought a house someplace else. It was a cheap house, but not in a good neighborhood, so the school that I had to go to was not a good school.
