in fact the best ideas happen when you are not planning them when you are just creating an environment where people get together in an informal way this is the reason why um Steve Jobs when he designed the Pixar building um he the initial idea was there's just one bathroom for the whole company
for - neuroscience - building design - common area to converge everyone - creates diverse social meetings - increases work efficacy - example - Steve Jobs - Pixar bathroom

These six are split across three operational meetings (each manager with their direct team, technical spec review, incident review), two developmental meetings (staff engineers, engineering managers) and finally a monthly engineering Q&A to learn what the organization is really thinking about.

Stop swapping boring professional stories and start connecting on a deeper level. Empathy is the social glue that engages people
Asking questions works always well, trying to understand someone's work/motivations. People like to talk about the things they find important.
-
You have no compassion for my poor nerves
strike up conversations early on. I find speaking at an event helps because it turns it into a place I belong at more. But without it, mentally claiming the space as my 'home turf' helps too. Which is why when I facilitate sessions I want to see and walk around the space before any participants arrive, so I can project my mental image of what we'll do in the session on the space.
-
When attending a networking event, preparation is key
I don't much like the premise here (preparing to strike up specific conversations with specific people) as it runs counter to the natural flow of interaction at any event (ugh 'networking event'). I do prepare though because face to face crossroads are scarce. I check who is coming that I know and would like to catch up with, I check sessions beforehand, and whether I'd like to talk to the speaker, I check for preconf meet-ups etc, and follow posts/tags about it from other attendees. That and having a set of questions and interests to guide my participation.

Your aim should very rarely be to record conversations verbatim or to copy long stretches of quotes from text you are reading.
Formal meetings should have administrators present who are responsible for capturing the content of discussions and outcomes of decisions. And nowadays, why not just record every meeting? And then use automated speech-to-text transcription to get a searchable set of notes.

easily exploited by a bullshitter. To counter this, organizations should only establish committees andhave meetings when there are clear terms ofreference, a value-adding agenda, and the rightattendees who can contribute to the desiredagenda. More simply, the need for a meeting shouldbe questioned unless an important decision needs tobe made.

I’ve been considering proximity-based group meeting rooms, like wonder.me, but I worry slightly that the new room won’t work as intended and we’ll all be at sea.
I've also run across rally.video as an option in this space.

Recent patent filings show that Microsoft has been exploring additional ideas to monitor workers in the interest of organizational productivity. One filing describes a “meeting insight computing system” that would generate a quality score for a meeting using data such as body language, facial expressions, room temperature, time of day, and number of people in the meeting.
So this will require that you have to have video turned on. How will they sell this to employees? "You need to turn your video on so that the algorithm can generate an accurate meeting quality score using your body language and facial expression.
Sounds perfect. Absolutely no concerns about privacy violations, etc. in this product.

What if instead of public meetings—constrained by both time and space, where the optimal outcome is consensus and therefore “no” has more power than “yes”—we invested more in low cost, ongoing exercises that produce a high volume of information, persist even after particular projects are completed, make priorities transparent, and neither seek nor assume a singular position from “the community”?
I remember Chris Schmidt making a comment about how the online meetings for the Cambridge City Council suddenly had much higher attendance when the pandemic kicked in. But of course that means the meetings themselves got even longer.

Set goals for the meeting. With any gathering there should be clearly defined outcomes that hope to come out of the meeting. These should be written somewhere prior to the start of the meeting—they can be written in an email, handout, or even on a white board—but make sure everyone clearly understands why are they present and what you are setting out to accomplish.
The goals should be set before the meeting, but I also think someone MUST say it aloud at the start of the meeting.
