His paper was forgotten and was onlyrediscovered in 1900, simultaneously and independently, byCorrens (Berlin), de Vries (Amsterdam) and Tschermak(Vienna).
The results he published as early as1866 in the Proceedings of the Naturforschender Verein in Brunn.
In other words, he would have expected to produce byselection an increase of the average length of the awns.

My own assessment is that the book, which reads like a thoroughly researched legal brief (more than 100 pages are devoted to notes, references and a very detailed index), makes the best possible case for the highly dubious proposition that the ideas of information theory influenced the substance, rather than merely the rhetoric, of research in molecular biology in the 1950s and 1960s.
Information theorist Solomon Golomb, who directly participated in the applications of information theory to early genetics, doesn't feel that it influenced the substance of molecular biology in the 1950s and 1960s though it may have influenced the rhetoric.

This quote works well for individuals, but looking at tree stands in Alaska only thousands of years from glaciation, one sees incredibly tall trees that have shallow root systems, but they utilize each others' root systems to keep groups of trees strong and tall. This apparently even extends to groups of trees looking out for each other to keep the group strong.
