To put it bluntly, Web3 and the crypto economy is still largely an ‘exit’ play for financial and coding elites, practicing the arbitrage of nation-states, but without much connections to local communities and resilient production; Similarly, local communities engaged in relocalized and regenerative production are not in sync with the mutual coordination capacities developed in the crypto/web3 context.

we have all of these huge applications that are gathering all this data uh and it's out there and theoretically is our data sort of but in reality they control it and you can't actually link the data to each other you only link to accessing the data through their application

The justifications—the lure of the community, the (now-limited) ability to bear witness to news in real time, and of the reach of one’s audience of followers—feel particularly weak today. X’s cultural impact is still real, but its promotional use is nonexistent. (A recent post linking to a story of mine generated 289,000 impressions and 12,900 interactions, but only 948 link clicks—a click rate of roughly 0.00328027682 percent.) NPR, which left the platform in April 2023, reported almost negligible declines in traffic referrals after abandoning the site.

Not a hard silo quit of Twitter, but shows heavy preparation.

From a technical point of view, the IndieWeb people have worked on a number of simple, easy to implement protocols, which provide the ability for web services to interact openly with each other, but in a way that allows for a website owner to define policy over what content they will accept.

We believe that Facebook is also actively encouraging people to use tools like Buffer Publish for their business or organization, rather than personal use. They are continuing to support the use of Facebook Pages, rather than personal Profiles, for things like scheduling and analytics.
Of course they're encouraging people to do this. Pushing them to the business side is where they're making all the money.

It's the feedback that's motivating A-list bloggers like Digg founder Kevin Rose to shut down their blogs and redirect traffic to their Google+ profiles. I have found the same to be true.
This didn't work out too well for them did it?

Still, link-in-bio companies have built-in risks that can make the idea of them sticking around for the long term feel like a fantasy. They rely almost entirely on Instagram and TikTok for their traffic. If the two platforms wanted to, they could replicate many of the new tools that link-in-bio companies have rolled out. “Instagram’s specialty is figuring out other third-party services that are building things on top of their platform and then duplicating those services themselves,” Haberman said. For example, after Instagram users began posting affiliate links to Amazon and other e-commerce sites in order to earn a commission from the products they hype, the platform introduced its own affiliate tool that keeps users from leaving Instagram.
Regardless of what third party businesses do, they'll always be at the mercy of the major platforms. And as a result, the users that rely on them will always be stuck in an arms race.

Nuzzel has been one of the few apps I've truly loved. It's been great for discovery. It's one of the very few I use every day and it's one of only three apps that I allow to give me notifications on my phone.
I'm devastated....

Yet however safe and siloed Western e-retailing may appear to be, it is now unlikely that it will become the world’s dominant mode of shopping.
Siloed: A system, process, department, etc. that operates in isolation from others.

Artificially Slow UI 2016-07-06 The UX Secret That Will Ruin Apps For You Facebook actually slows down its interface to make users feel safe, a Facebook spokesperson confirmed in an email.... various services on the web including travel sites, mortgage engines, and security checks are all making a conscious effort to slow down their omnipotent minds because our puny human brains expect things to take longer.... companies introduce what Kowitz calls an "artificial waiting" pattern into their interfaces. These are status bars, maybe a few update messages, to construct a facade of slow, hard, thoughtful work, even though the computer is done calculating your query. Another good reason to use your own tools (if it's faster than expected, you feel accomplished, not distrusting), or at least re-use indieweb software etc. that others are selfdogfooding because you know they won't be (or there's at least less chance of them) deliberately slowing it down.
