    1. Fluxus was an international, interdisciplinary community of artists, composers, designers and poets during the 1960s and 1970s who engaged in experimental art performances which emphasized the artistic process over the finished product.[1][2] Fluxus is known for experimental contributions to different artistic media and disciplines and for generating new art forms.

    1. momentary expression in Captain Wentworth’s face at this speech, a certain glance of his bright eye, and curl of his handsome mouth

Captain Wentworth is too polite to say what he really thought of Dick Musgrove but, unlike Mr Elliot, he does show his emotions and thoughts aren't always pleasant

    1. Dick

I'm not sure if this word had any of the same connotations during Austen's time as it does now. But Dick Musgrove does sound like a dick. It's a weird piece for such a loving close family, to have a son they didn't much care for or mourn when he died.

    1. He showed his famous sense of humor in a 2006 commentary for NPR's "This I Believe" series, writing: "I admire enormously the candidate able to face defeat with humor and grace. Nobody ever conceded defeat better than Dick Tuck who, upon losing a California state senate primary, said simply, 'The people have spoken ... the bastards.' "

    1.  "what is the beginning of Civilization?" and "Y?"

This is the question, the answer is ... because I know that if I am then so are you--understanding what it is the change wrought by my life and us all watching it.

Understanding how law and order have become a thing of archaic mideival horror stories in the world we see, and that's pretty much all that was possible in reality.

In Heaven, in our "rael world" that's not true, and the line ... the minimum we can allow--

    1. * Information-Processing Analysis : about the mental operations used by a person who has learned a complex skills

this sounds a lot more involved unless you are working off a basic set of assumptions for mental operations and complex skills. Further understanding of psychological research and learning theories would be needed.

    1. Call me Ishmael.

Que de versions différentes, en Français, pour traduire cette petite phrase!

    2. The transition is a keen one, I assure you, from a schoolmaster to a sailor, and requires a strong decoction of Seneca and the Stoics to enable you to grin and bear it. But even this wears off in time.

This phrase is typical of Melville's sentence construction. Comparison is the mean and reason is the goal.

Voyage of the Empress of China, 1784. See this site for a detailed history of early US-China trade.

A passage in Chapter 1 of Moby Dick describes a vigorous trade with the far East: “Posted like silent sentinels all around the town, stand thousands upon thousands of mortal men fixed in ocean reveries … some looking over the bulwarks of ships from China.”

However, trade between China and the U.S. commenced in 1784, just after the Treaty of Paris was ratified; by 1799, when Benito Cereno is set, it would still have been a relatively young trading relationship, especially considering the lengthy sea voyages required.

Principal commodities exchanged included the items mentioned by Capt. Delano (silks, sealskins, coin (specie), as well as ginseng tea, porcelain "China ware," lead, and cotton goods.<br> A.D. Edwards, Empress of China at Mart's Jetty, Port Pirie, 1876

    1. Fifty years ago, the science-fiction writer Philip K. Dick coined a phrase for these “useless objects” that accumulate in a house: “kipple.” In Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, which served as the basis for the movie Blade Runner, he theorized that “the entire universe is moving toward a state of total, absolute kippleization.” Kipple reproduced, Dick wrote, when nobody was around. The ubiquity of mobile devices and the ease of online shopping have made Dick’s prediction come true, with one small tweak: Our kipple does not just multiply on its own, every time we turn away. We grow it ourselves, buying more and more of it, because we can.

    1. which was their armor against their world.

A whole dissertation could be (likely has been) written on this idea of "urban" black style as a kind of "armor against the world."

It seems incredibly valuable for young people to acknowledge (and be acknowledged for) the cultural power of style.
