“Given the rapid growth of clean energy and expected slower electricity demand growth, the massive additions of coal-fired capacity don’t necessarily mean that China’s coal use or CO2 emissions from the power sector will increase.”
So basically, generation is not the same as capacity. As an example, China might have cross the 50% mark for capacity in terms of renwables, but the actual generation is much lower, as renwables have lower capacity factors. Coal in china is a similarly low capacity factor so even if it's built, that's not the same as it being used
-
China’s power market remains primarily coal-fueled. Coal made up 61% of electricity generation in 2022, while wind and solar power – despite making up a growing proportion of power capacity – accounted for only 14% of generation.
Even with all the massive growth in solar, renewables make up only about a 6th of the grid generation

China's increasing digitization of legal documents has led to a focus on using information technology to extract valuable information efficiently. Legal Document Similarity Measurement (LDSM) plays a vital role in legal assistant systems by identifying similar legal documents. Early approaches relied on text content or statistical measures, but recent advances include neural network-based methods and pre-trained language models like BERT. However, these approaches require labeled data, which is expensive and challenging to obtain for legal documents. To address this, the authors propose an unsupervised approach called L-HetGRL, which utilizes a legal heterogeneous graph constructed from encyclopedia knowledge. L-HetGRL integrates heterogeneous content, document structure, and legal domain-specific knowledge. Extensive experiments show the superiority of L-HetGRL over unsupervised and even supervised methods, providing promising results for legal document analysis.

Musk appears to be betting that the spectacle is worth it. He’s probably correct in thinking that large swaths of the world will not deem his leadership a failure either because they are ideologically aligned with him or they simply don’t care and aren’t seeing any changes to their corner of the Twitterverse.
How is this sort of bloodsport similar/different to the news media coverage of Donald J. Trump in 2015/2016?
The similarities over creating engagement within a capitalistic framing along with the need to only garner at least a minimum amount of audience to support the enterprise seem to be at play.
Compare/contrast this with the NBAs conundrum with the politics of entering the market in China.

Mr. Sunak said in a series of tweets that Britain’s 30 Confucius Institutes, most of which are Chinese government-run facilities located on British university campuses, will be shuttered under his government’s new China policies. cnxps.cmd.push(function () { cnxps({ playerId: '2dd9afad-0104-402b-b341-830f7d9e8ccc' }).render('52b1f7f094294ef9a64f6c534558cada'); }); “Almost all UK government spending on Mandarin language teaching at school is channeled through university-based Confucius Institutes, thereby promoting Chinese soft power,” Mr. Sunak said. Mr. Sunak also said he will seek a new alliance of free nations to counter Chinese cyber threats and to improve the security of technology, a major target of Chinese covert and overt acquisition.
It is good to see a significant Western leader cracking down on the so-called Confucius Institutes and explaining why they are threats. I hope that his CCP policies match his series of tweets.

A third five-year term as party leader would break an unofficial two-term limit that was instituted to try to prevent the excesses of Mao’s one-person rule, notably the tumultuous 1966-76 Cultural Revolution, under which Xi suffered as a youth.
It seems to me that the CCP did not fully grasp that someone with Xi Jingping's background (the ambiguous "suffered as a youth" framing here) would have views of power which do not align with the "party above all else" ethos.

“The congress calls on all party members to acquire a deep understanding of the decisive significance of establishing comrade Xi Jinping’s core position on the party Central Committee and in the party as a whole and establishing the guiding role of Xi Jinping Thought,” said a resolution on the constitution approved at Saturday’s closing session.
As subtle as one would expect.

Chinese Dragon was originally founded by descendants of Japanese nationals left in China after the end of World War II who eventually came to Japan. Originally forming in the late 1980s, the gang has managed to avoid being caught in many of the anti-organized crime ordinances that have reduced the size and influence of Japan’s yakuza syndicates since Chinese Dragon has not been officially classified as a boryokudan, or organized crime group, because of its looser hierarchal structure.
Very interesting origin story for the Chinese Dragon gang. Would be curious to learn more about the Japanese soldiers and other nationals who were left behind in China after World War II.

Take China as an example: the defeat of China during the two Opium Wars led to a rampant modernization in which such a technical membrane became virtually unsustainable due to fundamental differences in technological thought and development (the most significant existing membrane is probably the Great Firewall of China, but its construction is only possible thanks to Silicon Valley).
Both the concept of "technological membrane" (André Leroi-Gourhan, and how Hui applies it is fabulous.

the institu-tions in force in China in the eighteenth century were much more inaccord with Smith’s ideas than those applied in the United Kingdom.
Piketty suggests that eighteenth century China was a better example of economic liberalism in the vein of Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations (1776) than the United Kingdom was during the same period. He particularly points out lower taxes and balanced budgets in China, respect for property rights, better markets for labor and goods, competition, social mobility and freedom.

Concerning deforestation, Pomeranz stresses the fact that by theend of the eighteenth century, Europe had spent nearly all its avail-able resources. In the United Kingdom as in France, in Denmark asin Prussia, in Italy as in Spain, forests had disappeared at a rapid ratein the course of the preceding centuries, decreasing from around 30to 40 percent of the surface area around the year 1500 to scarcely morethan 10 percent in 1800 (16 percent in France, 4 percent in Denmark).Initially, trading in wood with regions of eastern and northern Eu-rope that were still forested made it possible to compensate in partfor these losses, but very soon that was no longer sufficient. We alsosee a gradual deforestation in China between 1500 and 1800, but it isless marked, in part because of a greater political and commercial in-tegration between the most advanced regions and the wooded re-gions of the interior.
Kenneth Pomeranz indicates that there was massive deforestation of most of Europe 1500 (30-40 percent coverage) to 1800 (scarcely over 10 percent coverage) during the early industrial age. Similarly there was a corresponding deforestation in China, but it was less marked because of the their size and distribution of technology.

hina’s most famous painting is “Along the River during the Qingming Festival.” Often referred to as “China’s Mona Lisa” (more for its fame and mysterious history than for any likeness to da Vinci’s portrait), the painting dates from the early 1100s and stretches over 17 feet.

David Fisman. (2021, July 8). Fascinating new preprint on delta vs older variants in well-investigated outbreaks in China. Viral load for delta is 3 log higher, and latent period is shorter too (estimate is 4 days vs 6 days). This may explain much higher R estimates which may be due to elevated viral load [Tweet]. @DFisman. https://twitter.com/DFisman/status/1413126886570536963
