Daniel Wirtz writes about his note making, 'writing at the speed of thought', based off his interstitial journaliing as day log, w links/tags for finding things back similar to my mo, types/actions added. Objects used for things w more permanence, like I split off notes from my day log too. All that doesn't say 'at the speed of thought' to me however.

    1. The more friction existed, the higher the stakes felt to me, and the more it seemed like I needed to have something very important and worthwhile to say before I could (should) blog about it.

Friction can forestall writing. I've moved to blogging from inside my Obsidian notes through micropub, rather than using the WP back-end. Gives me two things: the back-end pushed me to only write when I had time to finish, the notes allow multiple writings in parallel, and publishing is one key click.

adjacency - between - labour - of love - friction - toil - frictionless - joyful - adjacency relationship - Reading about toil and slavery associated with Labour maxed me think of the phrase: - labour of love - When we are able to appreciate that every moment is filled with the potentiality of the sacred, - we can transform every moment of now

    1. Speed and efficiency are, in my opinion, arbitrary gauges of success. The shear number of productivity czars prophesying about a "future without friction" are innumerable to be almost comical. In contrast to these efficiency futurists, when it comes to zettelkasten, I am pro-friction. But, not just any friction. Eufriction. Eufriction is good friction. Just as weight training, writing a book, and giving birth can all be considered a form of eustress[6], so too is folgezettel a form of eufriction.

    1. After all, Luhmann himself didn’t have automatic backlinking. He had to manually add the cross-references to his analog notecards, and yet the system allowed him to write dozens of books and papers. Indeed, as Christian from Zettelkasten.de has said, automation might actually be an impediment to the cogitation and deep understanding the method seeks to engender.

    1. Using an alphanumeric identification system for your notes is a workout. By having to situate new notes among previously imported ones, folgezettel forces at least one connection between ideas. It's mental calisthenics,8 acting as a check against capture bloat—that is, importing "all the things."

Those who practice analog note taking have a high level of friction which prevents them from over-collecting (or "capture bloat", importing "all the things", or "collector's fallacy") ideas, which may not rise to a certain level of value. Beyond this, the requirement to find at least one other note to link each idea to provides a smaller hurdle against these hoarding practices.

    1. If you can’t talk yourself into using your energy to write or type something out, it’s probably not worth capturing.

Being willing to capture an idea by spending the time writing it out in full is an incredibly strong indicator that it is actually worth capturing. Often those who use cut and paste or other digital means for their note capture will over-collect because the barrier is low and simple.

More often than not, if one doesn't have some sort of barrier for capturing notes, they will become a burden and ultimately a scrap heap of generally useless ideas.

In the end, experience will eventually dictate one's practice as, over time, one will develop an internal gut feeling of what is really worth collecting and what isn't. Don't let your not having this at the beginning deter you. Collect and process and over time, you'll balance out what is useful.

    1. And if you stumble upon one idea and think that it might connect toanother idea, what do you do when you employ all these differenttechniques? Go through all your books to find the right underlinedsentence? Reread all your journals and excerpts? And what do youdo then? Write an excerpt about it? Where do you save it and howdoes this help to make new connections? Every little step suddenly

turns into its own project without bringing the whole much further forward. Adding another promising technique to it, then, would make things only worse.

Keeping one's notes across multiple modalities, in different locations, different apps is a massive problem portending imminent and assured failure. Regardless of the system employed (paper, digital, app), one of the most important features of any note taking system is having them all centralized in one location.

    1. We recommend handwriting your notes and only typing up the parts that become more valuable to you once digitised, for example, if you need them to be searchable. Even then, we only type up a few of the best highlights, key points, or insights that will help us achieve some study or work-related goal, as that justifies the time investment.

    1. But all of these attempts misunderstand why the Open Source ecosystem is successful as a whole. The ecosystem of fairly standard licenses provides a level playing field that allows collaboration with low friction, and produces massive value for everyone involved – both to those that contribute and to those that don't. It is not without problems (there are many essential but unsexy projects that are struggling with funding), but introducing more friction won't improve the success of this ecosystem – it will just lead to some parts of the ecosystem to break off.

    1. Preserving user privacy is difficult when detectingmore nuanced forms of censorshipSome forms of softcensorship might involve intentional performance degrada-tion or content manipulation. Detecting this type of behav-ior would require comparing performance or content acrossgroups of users, but such a comparison also implies thateach user must reveal their browsing history.

If you want to investigate whether content for a user was manipulated or performance was degraded, there may be no other way but to access detailed logs of their usage. This might raise privacy concerns.

Not only is personalization difficult to disambiguate from manipulation and censorship, personalization also makes it more costly to compare the personalized experience to some baseline value to determine if manipulation or performance degradation has taken place.

    1. Friction was typified by general criticism of an action without constructive suggestions to move forward, often causing negative emotions among participants.

definition of "friction" : WITHOUT constructive suggestions to move forward

    2. Stalling and friction are linked: efforts stalled when friction accumulated or when the fear of criticism led to no activity. Likewise, avoiding stalling by making a decision could result in friction when others disagreed.

    1. Frictionial sliding refers to the movement on a preexisting surface when shear surface exceeds sliding resistance.

Frictional force is function of normal force. Frictional force is independent of the area of contact and independent of material used- weight of the block is dependent. whys is that?

There is roughness to every surface which anchor the surface in the asperities. ifthe block is heavier ore areas will touch and increase how anchored the object is to the surface.

A scaled up pool ball has higher topographical area than our own planet does if pool ball was size of earth.

Table with legs on carpet= contact points sliding along a surface
