For consumers, the equivalent of "build or buy" could be called "ads or nerds". "Ads" meaning ad-supported services, like consumer Gmail or Facebook. "Nerds" meaning hobbyist services based on free software and commodity hardware.
-
If you already have computer-based hobbies such as gaming or a social-media addiction, why not learn to run your own services as a hobby? Note, this is very different from learning to code. It's more about learning to be your own sysadmin and tech support, rather than being a programmer.

Kamatera is a very good option to run a mail server because They don’t block port 25, so you can send unlimited emails (transactional email and newsletters) without spending money on SMTP relay service. Kamatera doesn’t have any SMTP limits. You can send a million emails per day. The IP address isn’t on any email blacklist. (At least this is true in my case. I chose the Dallas data center.) You definitely don’t want to be listed on the dreaded Microsoft Outlook IP blacklist or the spamrats blacklist. Some blacklists block an entire IP range and you have no way to delist your IP address from this kind of blacklist. You can edit PTR record to improve email deliverability. They allow you to send newsletters to your email subscribers with no hourly limits or daily limits, whatsoever. You can order multiple IP addresses for a single server. This is very useful for folks who need to send a large volume of emails. You can spread email traffic on multiple IP addresses to achieve better email deliverability.

The term independent is considered more appropriate than self, as in self-hosted, considering the latter can give the wrong impression that it only refers to situations where the owners of a website decided to physically host it on hardware that is physically controlled and managed by them.
This idea of independently hosted versus self-hosted comes up frequently in IndieWeb chat. The IndieWeb doesn't generally participate in the "purity test" of requiring full self-hosting as a result.
-
Projects like the Open Journal System, Manifold or Scalar are based on a distributed model that allow anyone to download and deploy the software (Maxwell et al., 2019), offering an alternative to the commercial entities that dominate the scholarly communication ecosystem.
Might Hypothes.is also be included with this list? Though it could go a bit further toward packaging and making it more easily available to self-hosters.

The implication for instructors is that it is important to to know when intervention is needed in online CSCL and to what degree.
Question of hosting - how much/little facilitation is vital here. The paper recommends regular monitoring of online activities and intervening when clearly required. I wonder if the use of sync Stand-ups to address issues IRT would also help given the issues with attempting to collaborate async?
The instructor should play an active role in the collaborative process. He or she should be proactive in monitoring and intervening in collaborative activities (Chapman & van Auken, 2001; Hansen, 2006) and should ensure that the group works effectively (Tideswell, 2004; Brindley, Walti, & Blaschke, 2009) through mechanisms for assistance, feedback, and evaluation.
-
Skill in learning collaboratively means knowing when and how to question, inform, and motivate one’s teammates, knowing how to mediate and facilitate conversation, and knowing how to deal with conflicting opinions (McManus & Aiken, 1995).

Handling all these requests costs us considerably: servers, bandwidth and human time spent analyzing traffic patterns and devising methods to limit or block excessive new request patterns. We would much rather use these assets elsewhere, for example improving the software and services needed by W3C and the Web Community.

If you want a fast website without breaking the bank, go for GitHub Pages. It’s completely free and super fast. It does, however, require you to open source your site. If that’s not doable, CloudFront is a good alternative, but its price depends on how much bandwidth you push around. For most personal sites, CloudFront won’t cost more than a couple of dollars per month. The same thing goes for Google Cloud Storage.
Advice for a personal use regarding the static webhosting benchmark (2020 May)
-
The best all-around performer is AWS CloudFront, followed closely by GitHub Pages. Not only do they have the fastest response times (median), they’re also the most consistent. They are, however, closely followed by Google Cloud Storage. Interestingly, there is very little difference between a regional and multi-regional bucket. The only reason to pick a multi-regional bucket would be the additional uptime guarantee. Cloudflare didn’t perform as well I would’ve expected.
Results of static webhosting benchmark (2020 May):
- AWS CloudFront
- GitHub Pages
- Google Cloud Storage

For the past few years, we've run GitLab.com as our free SaaS offering, featuring unlimited public and private repositories, unlimited contributors, and access to key features, like issue tracking, code review, CI, and wikis. None of those things are changing! We're committed to providing an integrated solution that supports the entire software development lifecycle at a price where everyone can contribute. So what's changing? Over time, the usage of GitLab.com has grown significantly to the point where we now have over two million projects hosted on GitLab.com and have seen a 16x increase in CI usage over the last year.

Mozilla does not permit extensions distributed through https://addons.mozilla.org/ to load external scripts. Mozilla does allow extensions to be externally distributed, but https://addons.mozilla.org/ is how most people discover extensions. The are still concerns: Google and Microsoft do not grant permission for others to distribute their "widget" scripts. Google's and Microsoft's "widget" scripts are minified. This prevents Mozilla's reviewers from being able to easily evaluate the code that is being distributed. Mozilla can reject an extension for this. Even if an extension author self-distributes, Mozilla can request the source code for the extension and halt its distribution for the same reason.
Maybe not technically a catch-22/chicken-and-egg problem, but what is a better name for this logical/dependency problem?

The solution will be to go for serverless functions. This means that instead of occupying a server completely, it will only use the server capacity when the function needs to run.
Serverless as a cheap back end option
-
My favourites are Zeit and Netlify. They are quite similar in the features they provide: continuous deployment, around 100GB of bandwidth per month, and a built-in CDN. Another benefit is that they both provide the option of serverless functions, as we will see in the next section. This simplifies the number of services we need to integrate for our entire stack.
Good website hosting:

How do you leverage browser cache when Google’s very own Analytics.js has it’s expiry time set to 2 hours? How do you minimize DNS requests when Google advices you to copy their tracking code, linking to an externally hosted Javascript file?If that isn’t bad enough already, Google’s advice is to avoid hosting the JavaScript file locally. And why? To ensure you get access to new features and product updates.
-
Why should I host analytics.js locally? The Complete Analytics Optimization Suite for WordPress gives you the best of both worlds. After activation it automagically downloads the latest version of analytics.js from Google’s servers, places the necessary tracking code in your WordPress theme’s header and keeps the local Javascript file up-to-date using an adjusted version of Matthew Horne’s update analytics script and wp_cron(). This way you can minimize DNS requests, leverage browser cache, track your visitors and still follow Google’s recommendation to use the latest features and product updates.

People want to own their data and their namespace but they don’t want to run servers to do it. What’s the solution? Separate the elements. Treat your personal server as a BDS (Big Dumb Server), there to answer API calls and file requests. Move the admin interfaces up towards the client, and maintain them centrally the way apps are maintained. Eventually, move the presentation layer towards the client too, allowing readers power over how they consume the data on your server.

- general purpose
- accessible by http or https API
- Database administration:
- Native app or Web interface making privileged API calls.
- GUI file browser for web server folders and files.
- Presentation Layer
- Pull pages (or other data) from multiple databases.
- Customizable: the data you want, in the way you want to display it or otherwise use it.

Part 3, Pressbooks dependencies:
I skipped this section for now, wanting to just have my book(s) on the Web for starters. Looks like we are definitely chaning .php files below though.
-
Navigate to: My Books → YOUR_SITE → Dashboard
I believe the names of these categories has changed in the current UI: "My Catalog" has replaced "My Books."
-
Part 1, WordPress generic:
But for starting another WP install, skip this section entirely if following my lead, enabling Reclaim/Instrallatron's automatic configuration of multisite at installation.
-
Pressbooks works with PHP 5.6.x and WordPress 4.4.1.
I was working in 5.5 but Tim Owens quickly allowed me the ability to upgrade within the cPanel.
-
Network Enable "Pressbooks."
All I did of the above was download the PB plugin. You can "Network activate" from the plugin installed page.
-
Do not install Pressbooks on an existing WordPress blog -- create a new WordPress install instead.
This is pretty important. But it's easy to add a second WP install in Reclaim's Installatron. In fact, you can select "multisite" in the process and skip all of Part 1 below, including editing php files.
