We put a good dozen machines through a month, and large amounts of small parts. It's a great machine, but very expensive. Both the unit, the power demand, and the solutions. Not every machine or part can go in either, we still do many machines by hand to avoid damage in the ultrasonic. Quality of work is critical, but so is time. We can do the same level of in depth clean manually, but it takes 2-3 hours and the ultrasonic halves that time. We still do drying, rust removal, bulk grease, and final washes by hand to ensure consistent quality. Can't express enough how amazing the ultrasonic is. Deffinately increased our output. We work with OmegaSomics for machines, parts, and cleaners.

Puts about a dozen machines a month through their ultrasonic cleaner. Doesn't rely on it solely due to need for quality control.

It Sucks To Use A Typewriter In 2026, But It's Also Worth It<br /> by [[David Buck]]<br /> accessed on 2026-10-08T10:37:40

We have a long way to go before this unit is ready to rock and roll again (if it ever will be), but it'll be a lot of fun working on it and finding out.
The writer is definitely into the repair portion of the typewriter hobby space and despite some of the FUD he's spewing for lack of experience, he seems on the right track. He's discounting his lack of experience in the general space compared to his experience in computers, games, and guitar repair which he's obviously spent time. At least he can rely on this scaffolding to move forward in the typewriter repair space. Most others won't have this experience at all and that makes it even more difficult.
-
I ended up first getting an antique typewriter for free and then finding myself back at the drawing board when it proved to be more of a “fixer-upper” than I wanted it to be.
Example of someone getting an old typewriter as a "fixer-upper" and probably wishing they'd gotten one refurbished from a repair shop.
Longer version of the story appears below the highlighted section.
-
But, man, they’re a pain in the neck sometimes. They’re not exactly portable. Repairs can be difficult. Parts might be difficult to source. Plastic fatigue can destroy some parts of the machines. Pressing down on the keys can be a bit of a process at times. And if you get a machine where the rubber has turned to sticky sludge? God help you. The machines, while often beautiful, are absolutely not convenient in any way whatsoever. Also, you’d better be into some serious lubrication if you’re going to maintain an older model.
Most of the FUD here is that people are too cheap to bother having their machines properly serviced anymore and this is compounded by the fact that they don't know how to do most of the basics by themselves.
-
Let’s just say it makes perfect sense as to why someone would actually want to use a typewriter in what is now the mid-2020s, even if it kind of sucks sometimes. I can think of a few reasons, but the simplest one is: no subscriptions and the right to repair.

Andy Morris reports that Jay Schweitzer of Grammercy Typewriter uses this cleaning formula for cleaning the exterior of typewriters to be applied to a soft cotton cloth and not directly on the machine.
Morris further suggests staying away from decals with this.

Just wanted to share my excitement! I've been into typewriters for about 2 years and I started buying and repairing and selling typewriters just short of a year now. I have a small YT channel, an IG account and word of mouth around the village (pop. Aprox 1200 ppl) where a local grandpa asked to fix up his old Triumph, which was a freebie for experience and, not gonna charge grandpa! Last week, someone from across the island reached out to me, asking for assistance. They had recently purchased an Olivetti Letters 31, his first typewriter. We chatted and agreed on a price and a week later, it's now ready for pick-up. New ribbon, general degrease, clean and polish. The client is already excited and happy with the images and will collect it tomorrow. As far as I am aware, there is no "official" repair shop in Mallorca and from searches, I appear to be the only one (correct me if I'm wrong) but, the fact that someone found me and asked for my services, has made me extremely happy and excited and I'm hoping this will open the door to many new typewriters in look of TLC. Just wanted to share and thank all of you who have helped and given advice on repairs and general questions I've had which has led me to this point. Let's hope this is the start of something new and exciting.

I argue that these separations should guide judgments about public support for nationally connected pools.
If this sentence is the author's core thesis, the reader is not prepared by the preceding introductory sentences -- nor in the subsequent body of the abstract to fully grasp what the author means, nor why it is a basis for moral life (or moral evaluation at the individual, pool, marketplace, or nation-level?)
I am infering the author's intent is to suggest that the "transactional footprints of individual (local) commitment pool activity" can be aggregated into region/nation-level commitment pools platforms that support more "collectively moral" (meta-efficient?) practices and architecture for supporting aggregate improvements in co-regulation of coordination, responsiveness, and ethics."
I then anticipated further elaboration by the author on what is is meant by the capabilities arising from these nationally connected pools.
Not sure I missed something obvious to others? If other readers (or author?) of this abstract, can illuminate my understanding / inferences more accurately, the guidance is appreciated..

Coke contains phosphoric acid, which chemically breaks down iron oxide (rust) into iron phosphate. And Diet Coke isn’t sticky like Coke. And aluminum loses electrons and oxidizes, while the iron oxide (rust) gains electrons. This chemical reduction fundamentally changes the rust back into a form that easily breaks away from the base metal.
Craig French recommends soaking rusty typewriter springs in Diet Coke and then wiping them with aluminum foil to remove rust.

I would be more than happy to help you fix it, or if you are just done with it, I have a large number of machines for sale. I have everything from the 1920's to the 1980s, Manual, electric, electronic. I have portables and ultra portables. I also sell mine for about 1/3 of normal shops because I do this for the fun of it, not for income. I have a large number of Royal Quiet Deluxe and can even custom paint one if you want. Depending on your location, I'd even take that one in trade.

It's a Smith-Corona 5 series from the 1950s, likely a Silent-Super (though it's difficult to read the lettering on the back of the paper table. Looks like it may have been either originally a pink machine and someone repainted the body grey or someone chopped the pink parts off and put them on a gray machine.
Repair shops in the US typically run $40-75/hour of labor plus parts or a few hundred for a general clean, oil, and adjust. You can ask for the bare minimum to get it going again all the way up to a full restoration depending on your needs and budget. Typically based on what you need a shop will give you a quote before starting work.

IBM Selectric Service Training (1978, Restored)<br /> by [[Thickboy]] on YouTube<br /> accessed on 2026-07-31T10:13:34
I just finished a project and I think a lot of you would like it. I found the old Selectric training videos but the narration is very outdated, slow paced and the slides were all burned red and miscolored.
With the help of AI I restored the photos and created a new narrator. The script has been modernized to sound more palatable to our ear. "Stop the reel" updated to "pause the video", for example and is now narrated at a natural pace in a woman's voice.
These courses, for me at least, are way easier to sit through and absorb. There maybe be some coloration errors or glitches in some photos, but for the most part they came out pretty good. Take a look and let me know what you think.
I'm also putting together some review videos with quiz questions for each section that I will release soon.

I regularly use this “Renaissance” wax to protect paintings and, above all, very fragile inscriptions. After it dries (10 minutes) and is lightly buffed, the surface becomes very slippery and is no longer susceptible to friction or fingerprints. It also helps preserve nickel plating that is beginning to deteriorate on levers or axles, for example. It’s a truly reliable product.
via u/Tall_Garage_7398
-
To preserve raw steel without oxidation, you can apply a very thin layer of microcrystalline wax after thoroughly degreasing it to ensure good adhesion. This is the method used in major museums around the world. With this protection, there is no more oxidation and no grease.

1946 Electromatic Model 01 - IBM's First Typewriter <br /> by [[Tech Tangents]]
Not the best cleaning and repair advice here for a typewriter, but some interesting tidbits of IBM history.
-
Tip: of the 3 things WD-40 is actually useful for on a typewriter, one is cleaning and giving a nice sheen to crinkle paint safely. Apply lightly on a clean rag. The other two are cleaning white-out off plastic card guide without fogging the plastic, and removing the calcified masking tape often found on SCM portables.

Don't feel bad. Your not the only one. This misconception has been going on for years simply because no typewriter repairman has stood up and said " Now wait a minute! " The collectors have done all the talking and publishing while the typewriter man isn't heard. Consequently, it's the big typewriter collectors that are heard. They never talk about how many times they had to reclean a machine. They often have several and may only use 1 or 2. Also there isn't that many of us real typewriter repairman left to do the talking.
Due to the nature of online communication, it may often be the case that typewriter collectors and their colloquial advice may drown out the more experienced and professional typewriter repair people.
-
Most typewriter shops did not use alcohol as it was ineffective and contained water. Industrial alcohols contained keytones and acetones that will melt plastic and remove paint.
Solvents for typewriters used in repair shops: - White mineral spirits with a squeeze bottle. (Sometimes also called Varsol, Stoddard's Formula, and possibly Inhibisol) - Naphtha (aka lighter fluid; used in Zippo lighters, and frequently seen in Europe). PB B'laster is essentially pressurized naphtha in a can. - Auto carb and brake cleaners, usually pressurized in a can. These usually have acetone in them and will melt plastic. Will remove WD-40 if accidentally used on a typewriter.
For cleaning typeslugs, one can use naphtha or mineral spirits with a brass bristle brush.
For platen cleaning try mineral spirits or fedron.
Only oil the carriage rails for the bearings or trucks.
(This is all colloquial advice, albeit with experience, so check specific facts about what certain products contain.)

A 1950s Smith-Corona “Eighty-Eight” Secretarial model, this typewriter was purchased at Byers Office Equipment Co. in Ames.In 1955, Mer Byers established Byers Office Equipment at 126 Main Street in Ames. Art Taylor purchased the company in 1957 and operated it with his son Paul. Around 1963, the business moved to 417 Main Street.By the 1960s, the company offered machine rentals and repair along with new and used models of typewriters, calculators, and adding machines. The showroom also featured office drapery options and furniture. At its peak, Byers Office Equipment Co. served a seven county area with 65% of sales taking place outside of Ames.In 1973, the name changed to Taylor Office Equipment Inc., and operations moved to a new, larger space at 705 East Lincoln Way. The business continued to serve Ames and surrounding area through the early 1990s.

Tuning a typewriter
reply to u/solestal801 at https://reddit.com/r/typewriters/comments/1tp6xh5/tuning_a_typewriter/
Most will call it "adjusting" in the literature (eg. clean, oil, adjust). That's the sort of thing that's hiding deep within a lot of the repair manuals and found by closely watching lots of YouTube repair videos (and taking notes for when you need them). It's the art hiding within the practice and probably takes the longest to acquire.
This will give you a start for some resources: https://boffosocko.com/2024/10/24/learning-typewriter-maintenance-and-repair/
Some examples of the tidbits include:
- Which pairs of pliers (roller, nineprong, peening, etc.) you need to make adjustments in which directions for slugs to be properly aligned.
- How and where to make adjustments for the "touch" of a machine. Joe Van Cleave has an excellent video for this at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYOXgqiHBmg, but most importantly, he shows you that to really know the area, you need to read the repair manual to see the panoply of options for doing this.
- How to do adjustments (and in which order) for things like ring and cylinder (or hammer and anvil), on feet, and motion. I've linked a playlist for the SM3 here https://boffosocko.com/2024/07/14/aggregated-resources-and-playlist-for-a-crash-course-on-the-olympia-sm3-portable-typewriter/, that gives some broad generalities which are also applicable to most other modern machines.
By the sound of where you're at, I might suggest buying a Royal KMM for $20 and methodically working your way through this:
- Scadden, David T. Approved Home Study Course in Typewriter Repair and Service. Little Falls, NJ: Typewriter Repair School, 1959.

Verlon H. Pridgen Obituary It is with profound sadness and heartbreak that our family announces the passing of Verlon “Bill” Huey Pridgen on October 28th, 2024, at the age of 87 while surrounded by loved ones. Bill was born on February 1, 1937, to Morgan and Annie Pridgen in Samson, Alabama. He moved to Florida when he was young, where he lived out the rest of his life. While in high school in South Florida, Bill met the love of his life, Barbara Pridgen. Bill and Barbara married in 1957 and completed their family with their two children, Marc and Lesli. From 1959 to 1961, Bill proudly served in the United States Army. He was stationed at Fort Lewis in Washington and spent time serving in Germany. After retiring from the Army, Bill continued his lifelong career of working on typewriters. He eventually became the owner of McDavid Typewriter Service from 1970 to 2024. His love for all typewriters and his passion for repairing and restoring the machines earned him the endearing title of “Typewriter Genius”. As a devoted follower of Christ, Bill raised his family wrapped up in the love of God. He was an amazing role model and continually showed the love of God to those he encountered through his actions and words. He gave glory to God in all things. Bill was exceptionally committed to his church family at Trinity Baptist Church where he served in the choir and Cubbies. He also volunteered as a coach for their youth sports program. Exemplifying God always, Bill made the world a brighter place for 87 years. Bill is survived by a son, Marc (Donna) Pridgen; a daughter, Lesli (Greg) Wheeler; grandchildren, Ashley (John Robert) Pridgen-Blake, Gregory Wheeler Jr., Samantha (Curtis) Burkhardt, Alison (Garrett) Pridgen, Cindy Pridgen, Hannah Wheeler, Luke Wheeler, and Simon Wheeler; great-grandchildren, Skarlette Blake, Jackson Blake, and Lena Wheeler; and brothers, Donald (Sheila) Pridgen and Jerry (Marion) Pridgen. Bill was a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Barbara Pridgen; father, Morgan Pridgen; his mother, Annie Pridgen; and brothers, Gary Pridgen, and Robert Pridgen.Visitation will be held at 10am on Saturday, November 2nd, 2024, followed by the funeral service at 11am at Trinity Baptist Church at 3716 State Rd 21, Keystone Heights, FL, 32656. Interment will follow at Eliam Cemetery at 821 State Rd 21, Melrose, FL, 32666.In lieu of flowers, we ask that you donate to Haven Hospice to help their mission of honoring life by providing comfort, care, and compassion to individuals and families they serve. In the hopes of helping those seeking to remove the body/shell/jacket* of a Corona Zephyr (1938, in this case), I've created a step-by-step process based on my recent experience. (\The user manual from the 1930s refers to the machine's body as a "jacket.")* The steps are: Remove the two screws underneath the keys at the front of the machine (holding the typewriter to the base of the body. 2, 3, 4. ON EACH SIDE, remove the screws at positions #2 & #3 and the lug nut at position #4. Don't remove the screw at position #4 as it's not necessary & will be difficult to set back in place. Remove the back lower panel of the body to reveal the screws at position #5. Remove the screws at position #5 from EACH SIDE of the machine. Using a thin piece of cardboard (I used the cardstock from a cereal box) or a stack of a few pieces of paper, depress the top row of keys so that they'll slide under the body as you slide it forward. Slide the body forward, slightly lifting the back end to help guide it out. Work slowly & gently, keeping an eye on the keys to ensure that they are not getting caught on the body & that nothing is getting crushed, scraped, or scratched as you work. Continue gently & carefully sliding the machine out of its body. A view of the body without the typewriter within. Note that it is a single piece and the top & bottom do NOT separate. Good luck! ALSO: this guest post from Garrett Lai on Richard Polt's Typewriter Revolution site has a good approach for aiding in the sliding of the typewriting in & out of the body by making some plastic skids to avoid scraping/scratching during movement: https://writingball.blogspot.com/2020/06/guest-post-disassembling-smith-corona.html If you want to get any Corona Zephyr servicing details from the source, be sure to see Theodore Munk's post which includes his insights along with a copy of the original "1938 Corona Zephyr Typewriter Service Adjustment Methods" manual: https://typecast.munk.org/2023/02/11/1938-corona-zephyr-typewriter-service-adjustment-methods/

Fortunately the attachment point on both the mainspring barrel and the carriage were conducive to a single strand of telephone wire (core) which is a trick I learned from getting a machine fixed at a local shop many years ago.

Others recommend penetrating oil or WD-40 in combination with 0000 steel wool which should be enough to remove corrosion, but not damage the nickel plating.
I've also seen Marty Morren suggest 0000 inside Dremel tools for dealing with nickel plated key rings.

Today I learnt that the flange nut that holds the carriage lock pawl to the frame of the Olympia SM3 is an eccentric nut, so you can adjust the position of the pawl up or down, forwards or backwards. While I can very much understand why it would need adjusted up or down, so it lines up with the slots in the carriage rail, I could not, at first, figure out why you'd want it adjusted back/forwards. That is, until I put it back together and the little tab where the spring attaches started binding against the frame, jamming the carriage lock in the open position. Hopefully this will help fellow tinkerers who might be tempted to form the tab out, with the risk of damaging the carriage pawl on their machine.

I've had the same issue after taking mine completely apart. I can see the the a is too high, and the o and p are too low. This will happen the the type guide isn't in the correct position, and on your machine, it looks like it needs to be adjusted to the right, to bring the left side of the kb down, and the right side up. It's a fiddly process, and a small adjustment makes a big difference, so take it slow. Use the q and p keys as they are further apart on the segment. Give it a try and come back here to show the results.

as a reply to u/Fit_Artichoke_8668 with respect to unaligned letters on a Corona 3 typewriter. The typing line of the lowercase was very wavy (up and down), so not simply a case of on feet or motion.

Rightly or wrongly I'm sure a vanishing number of people at that time would have held your view.
You've got to remember the historical context of this ad. During World War II all but one typewriter manufacturer in the US ceased production of typewriters and the one remaining was really producing machines for the military. This ad from 1943 actually says in tiny print at the bottom: "Royal is making bullets, and parts for airplane engines, propellers, machine guns, rifles." Civilian groups did drives to collect typewriters to send them to the war effort. Many of the extant and upcoming generation of typewriter repairmen went off to the war effort. All this against the backdrop of people being used to taking their machines (especially office ones in use 8 hours a day) in for service every year or so for cleaning and adjustment. Most office typewriters of the time were in use for an average of 3 years before requiring complete overhauls or replacement. In addition to all of the other things being rationed, typewriters and typewriter service were also being heavily rationed, particularly because the manpower and steel was being diverted heavily to the war effort.
At the time, most typewriters were in the $125-200 range which is the equivalent to about $1,500 now. They were trying to help people preserve their machines and functionality. This was at a time when almost any sizeable town in the US had at least one repair shop busy with work. A city the size of Chicago probably had several dozens of repair shops working full time and that likely dropped to just a few during the war. (There's only one now, and it's only been open for a few years; it also has a wait list of several months for service because it's so busy.)
The issue of typewriter preservation was so great during the war that the U.S. Navy produced a series of videos about their proper use and maintenance of them *and other expensive office machines of the time). See videos at https://boffosocko.com/2025/06/06/typewriter-use-and-maintenance-for-beginning-to-intermediate-typists/ The government also got involved in creating maintenance manuals like Basic Typewriter Care and Maintenance, Equipment Maintenance Series No. 1 (US FWIP, 1945) and repair manuals like War Department Technical Manual TM 37-305: Typewriter Maintenance (1944) which is essentially the same as the [1945 Ames manual[(https://site.xavier.edu/polt/typewriters/AmesVol1-Standards.pdf).
Comparing this with today when the general value of typewriters is almost nil and we're lucky to have a few dozen professional typewriter repair shops still operating, but the rate of retirements and deaths has long been outstripping the replacement rate and you'll understand why self-service is necessary. Even given this, the number of typewriter fora on the internet, Facebook, Reddit, etc. the amount of tinkering knowledge is almost cripplingly bad but seems to chug along. You'll notice that there are an awful lot of people just trying to identify their machines much less carry out the most basic repairs. The number of "broken machines" I've acquired in my collection that only needed the ribbon color selector set to something besides "stencil" is a sad indicator of the state of typewriter knowledge now, much less what it may have been in their heyday, tinkering or not.
Even by 1983 as typewriters were already beginning to feel the pressure from the computer business, books like Bryan Kravitz and Nancy Gorrell's Hints for a Happy Typewriter were attempting to educate people on proper maintenance and light repair before needing to rely on repair shops that were already starting to feel the pinch.
Incidentally, IBM wasn't what put most typewriter companies out of business. It was vicious competition caused by offshoring and the cheapening of parts and materials while computers in general did the rest. And as for all those typewriter repair shops: most began selling/servicing word processors, office machines like fax machines, photo copiers, dictaphones, and even computers.

u/shapeless_nodule replied to your comment in r/typewriters ok post over thanks for providing this information in such a kind and welcoming way
You're welcome u/shapeless_nodule, even if you somehow didn't feel welcome by the quickest and most precise answer for which you could have hoped.
Given my general experience, you were highly unlikely to get the couple hours of free labor from internet strangers you were requesting to dig you out of the hole you made. Often requests like yours go unanswered for days, weeks, months...
I'm pleased to see exactly how far your "deeply indebted"-ness extended. About 8 minutes by my count. I'm especially glad that you left your post up in an attempt to help everyone else in the future who may search this sub for similar problems.
If you give up on it or feel like it's quicker and easier to go the professional repair route for help, try the list at https://site.xavier.edu/polt/typewriters/tw-repair.html
Good luck with all those springs. The Brother Deluxe 220 is a great little machine.

Hi All, In a fit overconfidence a couple of years ago, I bought a brother Deluxe 220 typewriter which worked fine other than being sticky. I duly tore it down, cleaned it up, oiled it, put it back together and... watched as nothing happened because somehow all of the springs had fallen out and were now sitting on my workbench. I then put it on a shelf and forgot about it, until starting a clearout last week. I would be deeply indebted to you if anyone who has this typewriter (or one of its sister models, as I understand it most of the JP-1 models are the same) take either some photos or a good video of exactly where all of the springs inside it connect to?
Reply: <br /> This is fairly steep ask, particularly when, for a few dollars, you can get the location of all the springs in the repair manual:<br /> - https://www.lulu.com/shop/ted-munk/the-brother-jp-1-typewriter-repair-bible/paperback/product-186kzqem.html?q=brother&page=1&pageSize=4 - https://twdb.sellfy.store/brother-typewriters/

To help remove a stripped screw head, hit it with Kroil or a similar penetrant first. Then with a screwdriver, punch or similar tool, give it purchase on the right hand side somewhere and give it a nice whack with a hammer. This should turn the screw enough to move things along.
Charlie attributes this trick to Dane Bailey (August 19, 1932 - April 21, 2019) of AAA Typewriter in Birmingham, AL.

"Mazak" in the UK but more widely known (at least in the US, where it was developed) and in its original form as "Zamak", this metal is notorious for disintegrating (not "exploding" as some earlier poster claimed). It is also known as "pot metal" and, unhelpfully, "white metal".
Mazak, aka pot metal, aka Zamak, is notorious for disintegrating over time. It's what can cause tab brakes on the Olympia SM7 to freeze up.

Olympia SM7 Typewriter - How to Remove and Repair a Stuck Tab Brake<br /> by [[The Write Typer]] YouTube<br /> accessed on 2026-03-03T23:50:21
Swelling pot metal or swollen cork can cause the tab brakes on the Olympia SM7 to seize up. One can file down the cork, or even remove one of the four brake elements and still have the system work. The brake drum is held in with an e-clip.

Rules of Good Repair Practices:<br /> The Success of the repair depends upon the Rapairman's ability in following the rules of good repair practices. These rules can be summed up as follows:
- Read the Service Bulletin thoroughly.
- Know what you are looking for. Never guess. Always investigate the source of trouble. Ask, if you do not know.
- Determine troubles by the process of elimination.
- Every part, no matter how small, has a job to perform. Do not overlook the smallest detail.
- Use the proper tool. Keep tools in efficient working order.
- Carefully handle smooth, plated or bakelite parts to prevent damaging or scratching.
- Make the repair like you would want it, if you were the customer.

Although the 'Mazac' tab. brake shoe problem is common, I cannot say that I have seen this before on an SG1 margin. Interestingly, there is a similar 'exploding Mazac' problem on the ribbon reverse arm of the Olympia Model 8 post-war. The factory probably had no idea at the time that this 'easy to die cast' metal would do this in years to come.

the disintegrating tab. brake shoes ! I have seen this on SM portables too - they have the same tab. brake. As a temporary measure, you could try filing the worst of the expansion off and re-fitting. You can also sometimes get away with having just three brake shoes instead of four.

[rant] As a side note, I'm wondering if this is an example of how the internet, social media, and self-publishing has contorted our designation of authoritative sources. For example, the only person I consider to be an authority on typewriters in this forum is Tom (thetypewriterman). He is the only one here (to my knowledge) who has actually been trained as a typewriter technician and has worked in the trade - long before the current crop of self-made authorities 'discovered' typewriters. Tom was actually repairing machines while some of us were still using them for school or work prior to the introduction of the personal computer. The majority of our forum members might be very experienced, some are self-learned shade tree mechanics, but to my archaic way of thinking this doesn't make someone an authority on the subject.I apologize for this obvious and distracting tangent. This is a sensitive subject for me because my own trade has been overrun by internet created, so-called experts who lack any formal training or professional experience. I throw up in mouth a little when I read, or hear the word influencer; the digital generation allows itself to be lead by those who talk the loudest, run the fanciest websites, or have the greater number of social media followers. No one seems to care if those influencers have any credentials that would validate their public opinions. These observations are not meant to slight dragon typer. I don't know who the OP's authority is, nor do I need to; however, I did cringe at the "typewriter god" description and have to wonder if this god is someone who actually worked in the typewriter industry, or is just an enthusiast like most of us here who became an influencer by way of self-promotion. Even with keyring pliers and the skill to use them, the blackout paper method is a lengthy one.
Keyring pliers are used to remove the metal rings off of both circular and tombstone glass typewriter keys so that the legends can be replaced or even covered over with black paper circles for teaching or learning typing. They take some practice and skill to use, but speed up the replacement of legends significantly.

reply to u/CaliKelli989 at https://old.reddit.com/r/typewriters/comments/1qx43wy/smith_corona_classic_12_for_75worth_it_for_my/ on signaling by online typewriter sales
Where you're selling is one of the biggest signals of all. Selling machines for over $250 on Facebook requires way more signaling on the part of a professional or semi-professional seller. Mr&Mrs are doing a whole lot more work on restoring their machines than the average "blow and go" level that Janet and her significant other are likely doing (or that done by the average shop), as a result they're doing more work to show that, but they're occupying a dramatically different market space. Who is offering warranties on their work? Who is recovering platens? Who is explicitly stating the quality of the rest of their rubber? (Note that Janet isn't saying anything about the rubber washers on her SM3s, nor did they say anything about the rubber feet or the feet on the cases. Were they all replaced?)
Most professional shops and restorers are selling via their physical shops or their own websites instead of eBay, which takes steep cuts, or FB where it's harder for their much better quality machines to stand out amidst similarly priced dirtier machines. (Most pros also refuse or prefer not to ship when they can avoid it, so online presence doesn't "buy" them much.) There's a huge gulf in the levels of work that Walid Saad or Lucas Dul are offering in complete tear downs and restorations and the simple clean, oil, and adjust operations that are being offered by average pro shops and that's different again from what I suspect Janet is probably offering. This doesn't even get into the space of the lowest level "flippers" and vintage/antique shops whose only value add is finding and offering machines. As a point of reference, Lucas is doing less than a full restoration a month in an average year. The rest is cleaning machines for straight sale and then repairs that walk in the door. I'd suspect that he doesn't have more than a dozen machines in stock that are ready for sale today compared to a multi-person operation like Typewriter Muse which has nearly 30 machines on the shelf ready to go.
There's a huge spectrum in the level of restorations being offered out there. Very few people appreciate any of the differences.
The issue is that many people starting out don't want to pay a lot for a clean/restored machine, so they're fine with something that "works". Generally they don't know what they're missing from a finely tuned machine. At the other end are serious collectors, who often have the knowledge and expertise to service their own machines. The biggest issue with the market is the huge gulf of information imbalance between the novice buyers and novice sellers and the professionals.
Hope this helps on the differentiation that's available out there...

If there is enough room (at least 1.2mm), I use micro paracord to replace drawbands. It has no flex or stretch, can have its knot sealed with a little heat, is tested to 100lbs, and is pretty cheap for more than you’ll probably ever need. I have used Atwood micro cord purchased from Amazon for my projects.

I twist together two lengths of kevlar fishing line that's 0.4mm diameter and rated for 29kg, so combined roughly 0.8mm diameter and ~58kg pull. This is about the sweet spot imo in terms of thickness, slim enough to fit in small routing holes on mainspring housings and thick enough to get a good sized knot when you tie it. It's also pretty close to the thickness of old sinew drawbands I've replaced. The rated strength is definitely overkill but better over than under. In practise a drawband shouldn't experience more than 750g-1,5kg of pull under normal use.

This is a persistent myth. Tolerance has nothing to do with it -- even in high-precision machine tools machined to within a thousandth of an inch, oil is necessary to reduce sliding friction and prevent wear. (In fact, super-flat bearing surfaces will even have deliberate channels cut to allow oil to stick.) Review some old service manuals and you'll find detailed lubrication instructions. This old Remington manual, for example, has a chart at the end specifying four different types of oil for different parts of the mechanism; this Typewriter Repair Training Course describes several methods for lubricating entire machines; and this Army manual suggests basically hosing the machine down with light oil. I suspect many people get the impression that oil is bad because very old oils, before the invention of modern synthetic oils and greases, tend to gum up into a sticky paste as they oxidize and separate over time. (Some pre-WWII greases were based on animal fat, and would go rancid!) Combine that with fifty years of cat hair and dust and the machine seizes up entirely. Modern synthetic light oils and greases should last much longer.
u/capnrefsmmat reply to
u/lodger238 at https://reddit.com/r/typewriters/comments/1hslx56/huh_i_thought_wd40_was_horrible_as_a_lubricant/<br /> Agree completely and to further the point; typewriters were manufactured with low tolerance in many areas just so they wouldn't need lubricating.

I speak from my experience on Olympia typewriters, and my engineers degree says the same: The most inner portion is not intended to recurve. Main springs wind in one direction, all the way. In this status, it's not usable. But fear not, you can rescue it. I rescued a main spring that had the inner connector broken off. Main springs (like all springs) tend to be very tough steel. You can simply break the faulty portion off. Then, you clamp the new end in grip pliers that double as a grip and a heat sink. A vice will do the same, but will be very finicky with the narrow curvature of the spring. Let that piece of the spring that you intend to bend into your new connector peek out of the pliers. Get a blow torch and heat that tiny piece to a bright red glow, then bend it one-third of the intended bend. Heat again, bend again, and once again. And now comes the most important part, the annealing: Take the spring out of the heat sink. Carefully apply heat to the new connector and the first tiny piece of the spring with your blow torch. You want to warm the connector, the bend and approximately 5mm or ¼ inch of the untouched spring. Don't allow it to glow. It may only make slight orange traces in the flame, but no more. Pull the flame away slowly, don't let it crash cool, don't blow on it, don't put it in water. Don't burn your fingers in the process. Your main spring is shorter now, but it will work just fine. Welcome to the world of typewriter blacksmiths.

On some typewriters, there is a feature called the End Of Line Lock which has this effect on the key action. Its purpose is to prevent inadvertent typing when the carriage is at the right margin. It is a bar across the width that prevents the links from going through their whole range. When that lock is stuck has the effect you are seeing at every position. Now, in this case it may not be stuck by dirt or bent parts but instead by the lack of its return spring. So, inspect the action until you understand how it works on this tw (It's triggered by a part on the carriage hitting the right margin stop, which causes that bar to move into position to block the type linkages.) and look for a place where a return spring might be missing or disconnected. Fix that. This might not be your actual problem but it is the most likely.

Sometimes Mr. Montgomery would partly disassemble a machine and leave it on Lundy’s bench — a test, a puzzle, a method of teaching as old as apprenticeship itself.

One Sunday morning in 2014, he opened The Seattle Times and found a feature story about Bob Montgomery, age 92, known to friends, customers and locals simply as Mr. Montgomery. Symptom: Ghosting lines overlaying typed text:
This is assuredly not a type slug cleaning issue and the secret is that the loops in the letters like "a", "e", "o", etc. are clear. The lines are caused by the paper not being held to the platen, so when the slug hits, you're getting ink from the other part of the slug transferring to the paper. The remedy is to tuck the paper underneath the paper bale and rollers.
If one still sees issues after this then check your manual to ensure that the ribbon is properly threaded followed by a check that the ribbon vibrator isn't bent too far away from the typing point and too close to the platen and causing the ribbon to rub against the paper.

There were at least two different mechanisms that S-C used to regulate the Power Space and I am unfamiliar with one of them. Start by taking off the bottom panel so you can see what's going on. Operate the power space while watching what is moving and then you should be able to understand what's involved. The system That i know switches out the regular escapement regulation (the dogs activated by key and spacebar linkages) for an independent one wherein the dogs are instead controlled by a fat rubber finger that gets diddled by a yoke that is powered by the otherwise free motion of the carriage. That's when it is working. Now, tho, it's not right. Most common fault is with the pivot for that linkage. See if that yoke feels sloppy. There is a white plastic screw with a divot in the inner end to hold and allow adjustment of the bearing of the yoke. That pivot screw is threaded through a hole in the frame and locked with a metal locknut and the thing loosens over the decades, allowing slop in controlling the dogs. If you're lucky the threads can be coaxed into holding a fresh adjustment. Do not force or overtighten it. Incidentally, the speed of the Power Space action can be adjusted by the position of that yoke hitting the rubber finger; that should not need adjustment, but keep it in mind. Your cause could be something else, but the normal operation of the escapement working with the keys and spacebar indicates that the escapement is basically OK. Cleaning never hurts, though.

Does it feel like the typebars are catching in the guide, or something binding deeper in the machine? If it's the guide (this is going to sound crazy), grasp the top of the typebar and sort of wiggle it side to side in the segment. Not overly forceful as you don't want to bend the segment slots, but just enough to allow the spring steel to realign. Test, and adjust if needed. It sounds kind of unhinged, but this is the fix for most American made machines that have bars getting stuck in the guide. I've done this with Royals, Coronas, and Underwoods in front of clients before and they look at me like I'm an idiot wizard. Ha If the top of the bar is seriously bent this won't work and you'll need a repair person to use some side alignment pliers, but if the bar is just tweaked it usually works very well with a bit of practice. My unsubstantiated belief of why this occurs is US companies using the same grade(if not the same company) of steel in their bars that tend to be a little softer than their European competitors. *You DON'T want to try this with an Olympia or other German made machines. 😅 If it's coming from deeper in the machine, check the linkages to make sure they're not tweaked and binding against each other. Hope this helps!

It's incredibly common for these 6 series Smith-Coronas to have broken plastic carriage release levers (a major design flaw). You can call around to shops with parts machines for original replacements. https://site.xavier.edu/polt/typewriters/tw-repair.html
There are numerous YouTube repair videos and ideas including these few I've bookmarked before, though there are surely others: - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNcQvfUk23s - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gb9VlrKcXcM
I've not seen anyone 3-D print a version (yet), but designs for one might be floating around out there.
I've also seen people jury rig all sorts of plastic replacements which is an option as well.
In practice, you generally only need one working one for your dominant hand.

Royal KMM FPE HH KH 10 T1 B64 Typewriter Ribbon Install Rewind Respool Replace by [[Phoenix Typewriter]]
The spools for the standard Royal typewriters (Ten, H, KH, KHM, KMM, KMG, RP, HH, FP, Empress, 440, 660, etc.) have a custom metal mechanism for their auto-reverse. The spools are known as the T1 (which is the same as General Ribbon part # T1-77B , T1-77BR, and Nu-Kote B64.) If winding on universal ribbon onto them, remove the eyelette which isn't needed and may interfere with the auto reverse.
The function of the mechanism is fairly similar to that of the Remington, but the mechanism is on the spool itself rather than on the spindle.
If necessary, Ribbons Unlimited carries these metal spools: https://www.ribbonsunlimited.com/6N064-Royal-Standard-Electric-Ribbon-64-p/6n064.htm

Remove the ribbon and compare what's happening bilaterally. Use the mirror symmetry of the two sides and the ribbon reverse functionality to puzzle out what's wrong. Is something stuck? Broken? Bent? Missing? Comparing the broken side to the working side should help to solve the puzzle.
Look closely at the mechanics of what's going on. Are the gears turning at all? Is there a pawl that holds the forward motion properly? Does something need to be bent back into place? Is there a missing spring perhaps?
Beyond this doing searches for ribbon advancement on YouTube (especially Phoenix Typewriter's channel) may unearth some illustrative help.

RE: poor type quality on the "!" via u/TheGuyAtThePlace265 at https://reddit.com/r/typewriters/comments/1no1whe/poor_definition_on/
Lots of things can cause this in rough order, check:
Clean the slugs
Ribbon can have an effect. Silk is generally crisper than nylon which is crisper than cotton.
The paper can have an effect depending on the thickness and general grain.
Typing technique can play a part. Often you'll see issues including ghosting and other problems, particularly if you bottom out a key while typing.
Are you using a backing sheet?
Is your platen rock hard or has it been re-covered?
Is your ring and cylinder adjustment properly done?
The most frequently abused slugs are often the ones at the the ends of the segment and 1/! definitely qualifies. Sometimes a small bit of forming can clear things up.
