      ANNIKA: - inner work helps us stay sane dealing with the chaos in our work - healing is not fixing - hope is a muscle, go to the "hope gym" - not just personal but collective

      EDWIN: - inner WORK - constant, continuous work - how do you scale these things? Is it wrong term to use? Mechanistic? - how do we move to global impact? We don't know yet

      LOUISE - inner work saved my - orientate inside away from trauma architecture - colonized and colonizer energies - they longed to be in union - be with all parts of myself - allow alchemy on the outside to the inside - liberate myself from my trauma structures and unfold myself - we cannot be a restorer unless we do that inner work - systeming - verbalizing / articulating it - we are all actors in creating the system - question - where am i systeming from? - answer - I am an interbeing - Am i systeming from the interbeing space or the trauma architecture space? - Where am I seeding from? What energy do I put into my work? - system is not concrete and fixed but fluid - fielding - bringing different human fields together - I can work with hatred and rage on the inside and transmute it so that I don't add to it on the outside

      JOHN: - stuck systems and lens of trauma can help us get unstock - 70% of people have experienced trauma - trauma is part of the human experience - people make up systems - so traumatized people makes traumatized systems - fight, flight and freeze happens at both levels - at system level, its fractally similiar - disembodied from wisdom - in state of survival and fear - fixing things - until we deal with the trauma in the people, we will continue to have traumatized systems - More work won't help if it's coming from traumatized people

      EDWIN - incremental change - something holding us back - built upon these traumas - Economic metrics are out of touch with how the trauma affects systems - Journey - awareness first, then understanding and inner transformation and finally change - Discussion with funders - most are still stuck in old paradigm of metrics, audits, etc - this comes with trauma because we have no trust on who is on the other side - a big part of the system is built on mistrust, creates more gaps between us - need to become anti-fragile

      ANNIKA - Funders have lack of trust because inner work hasn't been done on both sides - As a funder, we really try to create a space of trust - Think of the language we use to be inclusive - How do we make inner work a part of the operating system of how we work? - We looked at 500 mental health organizations over the years - It's so urgent now that we align our work

      EDWIN - We have a lot of half-formed thoughts - It's very complex and nobody has cracked it - We have a phrase at Axum that we move at the speed of trust - To do something different, they need to trust you - When I think of the discussions I've had with heads of states and CEOs, these meaningful inner ideas are not often brought up

      LAURA - When there's no trust, even if there is no danger, the trauma is still brought up - We need to shift our lens on trauma and become aware of when trauma emerges - quote - inner condition of the intervener determines the success of intervention - Bill O'Brien

    3. his Holiness um uh his Holiness uh made the request that we investigate tokam and I believe that one of uh his interests his Holiness his interest in studying took down is because this represents a real challenge to Western science because uh uh the suggestion in the traditional Tibetan texts is that there is a subtle quality of awareness that is still present even after the conventional Western definition of death after the heart has stopped beating after the breathing has stopped there they're said to be uh this subtle quality of awareness uh this clear light stage that is still present

    1. the only way you can visualize the vaces because they're too tiny to be visualized by standard microscopy labeling with florescent dyes is about the only way we can um easily identify what molecules have been passed down from the vesicles to The Germ cells but that's very restrictive you see because there will be millions of different molecules in a single visle to be faced with only being able to label three or four of those otherwise we can't make out the the differences is it's very tedious

    1. This entire process took a few days of my time, spread over a few weeks. That's a lot of work.

      How can you put in that much amount of effort and time as a student, where you have schooldays and homework to deal with.

      But there are benefits. Suppose a student HAS to study for exams, but doesn't want to spend a lot of time studying (since exams depend on rote learning and retrieval), he/she can use Anki. The time spent should be worth it. There may be some opportunity costs though, like doing some other social activity or creative work rather than putting questions into Anki. This requires motivation, dedication and perhaps sense of progress.

    1. n contemporary society, the way we consume information has also started to become more liquid. We “stream” data to our computers. Content “flows” across different platforms and adjusts itself to the material container and the angle at which we view it. Information is no longer held in static, material formats, but is made mobile and ephemeral. This shift has had consequences for the graphic designer too. The designer not only has to adapt to this new medium, she is also no longer the only one with the skills to use it. Digitization and the Internet have made it increasingly easy for laypeople to access software and tutorials to make their own designs at little to no cost. With these developments, graphic design as a profession has started to lose its definition and its sense of identity.

    1. Some people eventually realize that the code quality is important, but they lack of the time to do it. This is the typical situation when you work under pressure or time constrains. It is hard to explain to you boss that you need another week to prepare your code when it is “already working”. So you ship the code anyway because you can not afford to spent one week more.

    1. If we overlay the four steps of CODE onto the model ofdivergence and convergence, we arrive at a powerful template forthe creative process in our time.

      The way that Tiago Forte overlaps the idea of C.O.D.E. (capture/collect, organize, distill, express) with the divergence/convergence model points out some primary differences of his system and that of some of the more refined methods of maintaining a zettelkasten.

      A flattened diamond shape which grows from a point on the left so as to indicate divergence from a point to the diamond's wide middle which then decreases to the right to indicate convergence  to the opposite point.       Forte's focus on organizing is dedicated solely on to putting things into folders, which is a light touch way of indexing them. However it only indexes them on one axis—that of the folder into which they're being placed. This precludes them from being indexed on a variety of other axes from the start to other places where they might also be used in the future. His method requires more additional work and effort to revisit and re-arrange (move them into other folders) or index them later.

      Most historical commonplacing and zettelkasten techniques place a heavier emphasis on indexing pieces as they're collected.

      Commonplacing creates more work on the user between organizing and distilling because they're more dependent on their memory of the user or depending on the regular re-reading and revisiting of pieces one may have a memory of existence. Most commonplacing methods (particularly the older historic forms of collecting and excerpting sententiae) also doesn't focus or rely on one writing out their own ideas in larger form as one goes along, so generally here there is a larger amount of work at the expression stage.

      Zettelkasten techniques as imagined by Luhmann and Ahrens smooth the process between organization and distillation by creating tacit links between ideas. This additional piece of the process makes distillation far easier because the linking work has been done along the way, so one only need edit out ideas that don't add to the overall argument or piece. All that remains is light editing.

      Ahrens' instantiation of the method also focuses on writing out and summarizing other's ideas in one's own words for later convenient reuse. This idea is also seen in Bruce Ballenger's The Curious Researcher as a means of both sensemaking and reuse, though none of the organizational indexing or idea linking seem to be found there.


      This also fits into the diamond shape that Forte provides as the height along the vertical can stand in as a proxy for the equivalent amount of work that is required during the overall process.

      This shape could be reframed for a refined zettelkasten method as an indication of work


      Forte's diamond shape provided gives a visual representation of the overall process of the divergence and convergence.

      But what if we change that shape to indicate the amount of work that is required along the steps of the process?!

      Here, we might expect the diamond to relatively accurately reflect the amounts of work along the path.

      If this is the case, then what might the relative workload look like for a refined zettelkasten? First we'll need to move the express portion between capture and organize where it more naturally sits, at least in Ahren's instantiation of the method. While this does take a discrete small amount of work and time for the note taker, it pays off in the long run as one intends from the start to reuse this work. It also pays further dividends as it dramatically increases one's understanding of the material that is being collected, particularly when conjoined to the organization portion which actively links this knowledge into one's broader world view based on their notes. For the moment, we'll neglect the benefits of comparison of conjoined ideas which may reveal flaws in our thinking and reasoning or the benefits of new questions and ideas which may arise from this juxtaposition.

      Graphs of commonplace book method (collect, organize, distill, express) versus zettelkasten method (collect, express, organize (index/link), and distill (edit)) with work on the vertical axis and time/methods on the horizontal axis. While there is similar work in collection the graph for the zettelkasten is overall lower and flatter and eventually tails off, the commonplace slowly increases over time.

      This sketch could be refined a bit, but overall it shows that frontloading the work has the effect of dramatically increasing the efficiency and productivity for a particular piece of work.

      Note that when compounded over a lifetime's work, this diagram also neglects the productivity increase over being able to revisit old work and re-using it for multiple different types of work or projects where there is potential overlap, not to mention the combinatorial possibilities.

      It could be useful to better and more carefully plot out the amounts of time, work/effort for these methods (based on practical experience) and then regraph the resulting power inputs against each other to come up with a better picture of the efficiency gains.

      Is some of the reason that people are against zettelkasten methods that they don't see the immediate gains in return for the upfront work, and thus abandon the process? Is this a form of misinterpreted-effort hypothesis at work? It can also be compounded at not being able to see the compounding effects of the upfront work.

      What does research indicate about how people are able to predict compounding effects over time in areas like money/finance? What might this indicate here? Humans definitely have issues seeing and reacting to probabilities in this same manner, so one might expect the same intellectual blindness based on system 1 vs. system 2.


      Given that indexing things, especially digitally, requires so little work and effort upfront, it should be done at the time of collection.


      I'll admit that it only took a moment to read this highlighted sentence and look at the related diagram, but the amount of material I was able to draw out of it by reframing it, thinking about it, having my own thoughts and ideas against it, and then innovating based upon it was incredibly fruitful in terms of better differentiating amongst a variety of note taking and sense making frameworks.

      For me, this is a great example of what reading with a pen in hand, rephrasing, extending, and linking to other ideas can accomplish.

    1. Before a bug can be fixed, it has to be understood and reproduced. For every issue, a maintainer gets, they have to decipher what was supposed to happen and then spend minutes or hours piecing together their reproduction. Usually, they can’t get it right, so they have to ask for clarification. This back-and-forth process takes lots of energy and wastes everyone’s time. Instead, it’s better to provide an example app from the beginning. At the end of the day, would you rather maintainers spend their time making example apps or fixing issues?

    1. I could get a lot more done in an 8-9 hour day with a PC and a desk phone than I get done now in a 9-10 hour day with a laptop /tablet / smartphone, which should allow me to be more a lot more productive but just interrupt me. I don't want the mobile flexibility to work anywhere. It sucked in management roles doing a full day then having dinner with friends and family then getting back to unfinished calls and mails. I much prefer to work later then switch off totally at home.

    1. Someone who took the afternoon off shouldn't feel like they did something wrong. You don't have to defend how you spend your day. We trust team members to do the right thing instead of having rigid rules. Do not incite competition by proclaiming how many hours you worked yesterday. If you are working too many hours talk to your manager to discuss solutions.

    1. Each year the winner is crowned with great fanfare at Eastwood Shopping Centre, which is owned by Yuhu Group, the company founded by billionaire property developer and political donor Huang Xiangmo.

      A suggestive paragraph that may have had currency at the time you put together the story - but really, pretty much irrelevant.

      With all this unnecessary detail - it's no wonder you never got round to the teeny weeny task of counterbalancing the grand crusade of George Simon to put an end to to the event, with the fact that it failed. Spectacularly!

      And if you had just a bit more time, you probably would have been able to also include there was another similar attempt prior to his, from one of his factional colleagues, that was also punted by council.

      This dilemma also applies to the complexity of representing time in information systems.

      Is this part of the problem with articulating the information extracted from social media and entering it in the Google Sheet in order to become an artifact?
