my favorite detail about this scene is how he's holding the coffee mug at the end. He has his hand on the hot part not by the handle, almost like a last bit of comfort/distraction, a little warmth, the very thing that brought life in the first place.
people holding warm drinks induce "warm" feelings in viewers.<br /> teddy was alone at the dinner, so the cup of coffee was his only friend.<br /> earlier in the movie, there are at least 2 references to "this technology is the friend we need"<br /> ref 1 at the "bash liif presentation" at 0:25:30 - "all of my life's work, really i see, has been driven by an inexpressible need for a friend, who would understand and soothe me."<br /> "if i feel sad, afraid, or alone ..."<br /> 0:56:20 "lot of fear out there ... parents dont know what to say to their kids ..."<br /> "your words are a great comfort to our viewers ..."<br /> "whenever i feel afraid or alone in this, i think of you, and i just feel better"<br /> ref 2 01:18:40 "And who knows? Maybe, just maybe,<br /> one of our scientists can be that friend we all need to lean on during uncertain times."<br /> its also a personality test. in times of stress, some people prefer company (neurotic types, dependent, followers), and some people prefer solitude (psychotic types, free, leaders).

I love that he closes the pamphlet again with a nod to comfort and ease of use.
...what this pamphlet has sought to do is to make it possible for the researcher to develop a way of doing things which will be as productive and as comfortable as possible.

Unlike many note taking manuals, Goutor advises that within the small list of rules and standards which he's laid out, one should otherwise default to maximizing the comfort of their note taking system. This may be as small as using one's favorite writing instruments or inks. (p28)
It's nice to see him centering self-care and small things which contribute to the researchers' mental health within note taking design and user interface.

deceitfulness of riches
The NET translation says "the seductiveness of wealth". This gave me pause as I was reading it this morning sitting on my couch under a blanket with hot coffee, while the garbage men drive past all bundled up in the 27 degree weather. Wealth is seductive because it enables comfort.
Do not let comfort prevent you from getting out there and being "doers of the word, and not hearers only" (James 1:22).

Geocaching is built upon the idea of bringing people to places where they wouldn’t be otherwise.
I hadn't thought about this, but it's worth contemplating.
What other activities cause this?

Tried this today. Lacking beer, a bit of milk and a shot of Jack Daniels did pretty well as a substitute.

The result was a mother, soft, warm, and tender, a mother with infinite patience, a mother available twenty-four hours a day, a mother that never scolded her infant and never struck or bit her baby in anger. Furthermore, we designed a mother-machine with maximal maintenance efficiency since failure of any system or function could be resolved by the simple substitution of black boxes and new component parts. It is our opinion that we engineered a very superior monkey mother, although this position is not held universally by the monkey fathers.
Finding the importance the monkeys senses were to thriving the development of this surrogate mother figure was able to demonstrate that it was more than just the need for milk that the infant monkeys craved.

When you intentionally push yourself outside of your comfort zone and schedule periods of rest and recuperation, something interesting happens: Your capacity to endure stress increases. It’s as if you’ve created a new, set point for what feels normal.
Constantly pushing yourself past your comfort zones expands your comfort zone.
A new normal for stress endurance is made as you consonantly push yourself

“I’ll skip my turn, thanks.”
Having an option to not participate when not comfortable, I feel actually makes students want to participate more since they feel as if they have a choice.

In a world where comfort is king, arduous physical activity provides a rare opportunity to practice suffering.
This is actually a very good insight that can be applied to the spiritual life.

This is interesting too. That our own speech and sounds provides us with a level of comfort.
