    1. Systems such as DOI can thus support resolution mechanisms that are likely to be able to maintain the resolution of identifiers regardless of changes in technology or to one particular system.

    1. articulates requirements for readability sating that identifiers must be: Any printable characters from the Universal Character Set of ISO/IEC 10646 (ISO 2012):UTF-8 encoding is required; Case insensitive:Only ASCII case folding is allowed.

      {UTF-8} {ASCII Case Folding}

    2. The reason for broadening them is that identifier resolution systems may be forced to change protocols over time and what is acceptable for one protocol may not be for another.

    3. Creating identifiers that are independent of any particular technology or organisation and are able to be unambiguously understood are well-known requirement for PID systems.

    1. Many of its features reappear in most, and in some cases all, of the constitutions to come. These included the due process rights common in the American states (for example, protection against unlawful search and seizure and the right to be tried by a jury of your peers), the separation of powers backed up with checks and balances, and a wide variety of elected positions with short terms and term limits.

Texas wanted a to be like the US with seperation of powers, everything possible to limit government powers

    1. DeWine said he has talked directly with the director and several members of the six-member Ohio Casino Control Commission, to which the legislature gave the job of regulating the fledgling industry.

Since neither you nor I nor anyone else may dictate whether or not people bet on sports in Ohio, we couldn't have justly granted that authority to the legislature to hand off to the made-up "Ohio Casino Control Commission". We also couldn't have justly granted any authority to "Governor" Mike DeWine.

This is simply corrupt racketeering by the most powerful gang in the state, and their "legions of enforcer" mercenaries to claim a right to impose their opinions on Ohioans when no one else can.

For those confused, it's right there in the Just Powers clause of The Declaration of Independence.

All just Gov power must be granted to it by individuals. They can't just wish power for themselves out of thin air, no matter how many legislators or voters "vote" for the wish to come true.

    1. illusion of independence 01:02:25 part of what it is to be a self part of what it is to me this underlying transcendent atman is to be independent of the world standing against it acting on it but not being acted on by it 01:02:39 taking it as object but always being subject and so we get this illusion of independence and of transcendental freedom that really mistakes who we are and gives us very strange moral 01:02:51 attitudes of praise and blame and anger and pride and so forth

Third consequence : illusion of independence - we are always the subject, never the object

    1. Generally speaking: The more independence a technology gives you, the higher its barrier for adoption.

I've previously framed this as a greater range of choices (towards independence) requires more work--both work to narrow down one's choices as well as potentially work to build and maintain..

    1. “By the way,” she wrote, “in the new code of laws which I suppose it will be necessary for you to make, I desire you would remember the ladies, and be more generous and favorable to them than your ancestors. Do not put such unlimited power into the hands of the husbands. Remember all men would be tyrants if they could.” She went on, “If particular care and attention is not paid to the ladies, we are determined to foment a rebellion, and will not hold ourselves bound by any laws in which we have no voice or representation.”

—Abigail Adams, March 1776, in a letter to her husband John Adams serving in the Continental Congress

      especially:

all men would be tyrants if they could.

    1. A technology whose affordances run contrary to your convictions can rob you of your independence — and any technology deployed on the scale of Canvas will inevitably do that.

One could insert many things here for Canvas.

    1. dependent

The short story also reflects the growth of Con and Jug in a way that they grow more and more independent after losing their father. When their father was alive, they always asked for permission for whatever they want to do. Now they can handle a lot of things at home.

    1. Doctoral programs are often highly unstructured learning and training environments, where individual autonomy and freedom are highly valued. Decisions as to what counts as a good idea, a worthwhile project, or adequate progress are often left to the discretion of professors, and criteria for success can be opaque for students. This is even more so for those who are not already “in the know.”

    1. Any local, state or national government, or any political machine, in order to live, must give the people assurance that they can express their will freely and that their votes will be counted. The most powerful machine cannot exist without the support of the people. Political bosses and political machinery can be good, but the minute they cease to express the will of the people, their days are numbered.

A very powerful sentiment aligned with the US Declaration of Independence.

    1. Learning is a subversive act.

YES! In American schools you are indoctrinated with the premise: "There is no difficult material. There are only difficult learners." The "trial-by-failure" prevalent in the 70's and 80's, that if you repeat a subject you truly do not nor will not ever understand, Algebra in my case, you are somewhat "subversive" to the rest of classroom, the teacher and especially the school. Report card comments: asks too many questions/asks no questions, disruptive/sleeps in class, no effort given, won't get tutored after school labels the learner without labelling the conformity of the classroom: fit in or be shut out. Excellent point!

    1. governments are instituted among men

Jefferson got ideas for the constitution from "Genuine Principles of the Ancient Saxons"

    2. Prudence indeed will dictate that governments long established should not be changed for light & transient causes;

[I have no doubt that Jefferson studied The genuine principles of the ancient Saxon, or English constitution, Volume 4 prior to writing the Declaration of Independence]

    1. Databases must parse

But behind the database is a human (or group of humans) who made decisions regarding why and how the database should parse that information, right? I suppose this is part of the "interdependence," but unlike the bird and water buffalo, the database will not wander away and start making it's own sets of data points surrounding Whitman's work, right? The database cannot be truly independent. (Or maybe it can?)

The charge that the British Crown had induced Native Americans to attack colonists was later repeated in the Declaration of Independence.

    1. Back in the 1960s and '70s, that debate led to a brand new school design: Small classrooms were out. Wide-open spaces were in. The Open Education movement was born.

Independence High School in Columbus, OH was like this!

    1. independent of male support

      From Mary Wollstonecraft's Vindication:

"Consequently, the most perfect education, in my opinion, is such an exercise of the understanding as is best calculated to strengthen the body and form the heart. Or, in other words, to enable the individual to attain certain habits of virtue as will render it independent. In fact, it is a farce to call any being virtuous whose virtues do not result from the exercise of reason."

    1. “When we were fighting for our independence, lost three million lives, where were they so-called Troika?” he queried, in denial of their contribution to the independence of South Sudan.

What happened in the independence process of South Sudan, and why was it suddenly disrupted?

    1. There is, indeed, a capacity for long life that is quite independent of health or strength; for many people live long who lack the excellences of the body; but for our present purpose there is no use in going into the details of this.

Or independence, getting to my earlier point.

    2. A man cannot fail to be completely independent if he possesses these internal and these external goods; for besides these there are no others to have.

It sounds like he is placing "independence" at the base of all happiness. I do not disagree, but I would hope it is debatable, since it is not possible for all people at all times to be independent.
