    1. It looks like the system is also very similar to Luhmann’s Zettelkasten. Though again, his discipline seems to exceed mine because I am a lot less ordered.

Fascinating to see Ryan Holiday referencing Manfred Kuehn blogposts from 2007 here.

Specifically it was a link to http://takingnotenow.blogspot.com/2007/12/luhmanns-zettelkasten.html

Given the popularity of this original Thought Catalog post and the alternate which appeared on Holiday's site, this reference would likely have helped to push the popularity of Luhmann and his Zettelkasten in English speaking territories after 2013-12-23.

    1. Without fail, obituaries commented on theindex and declared the colossal Zettelkasten either a great gift to scholarship or alter-nately ‘mere chips from his workshop’, which marked an exceptional effort but ultimateinability to look beyond the details. 1

Gotthard Deutsch, Divine and Writer, Dies of Pneumonia’, 21 Oct. 1921, American Jewish Archives (AJA), Cincinnati, OH, MS-123 Oversize Box 313; Chicago Rabbinical Association, ‘Gotthard Deutsch Memorial Resolutions’, 31 Oct. 1921, AJA MS-123 1/17.

An obituary calling a Zettelkasten "mere chips from his workshop" seems more indicative of the lack of knowledge of what one is and how it is used than a historian of information or academic with knowledge of the tradition calling it such.

This quote from 1921 is also broadly indicative of the potential fact that the idea of zettelkasten for academic use was not widely known by the general public, if in fact, it ever had been.

    1. . Just as genes propagate themselvesin the gene pool by leaping from body to body via sperms or eggs, somemes propagate themselves in the meme pool by leaping from brainto brain via a process which, in the broad sense can be called imitation.

Having grown up in the age of modern technology, it is quite simple to understand the notion of memes that Dawkins presents in comparison to the common memes of the current digital era. When given the right audience and shared in the right social situations, memes can spread like wildfire. Oftentimes memes and their respective ideas will reach a tipping point (as defined by Malcolm Gladwell) and spike in popularity then eventually die out. I find fairy tales interesting in the sense that, compared to other trends and memes, they have not one short life of recognition but many spread over the course of generations.

    1. chapter 4 includes repro-ductions of index cards with handwritten corrections andadditions. As unfamiliar as this way of taking notes may beto today’s students, it evokes nostalgic memories for thoseof us who attended college before the 1990s.

In 2015, when considering Umberto Eco's use of index cards in his classic book How to Write a Thesis, Francesco Erspamer comments that taking notes using index cards was more common and even nostalgic for those who attended college prior to 1990

    1. t wasn't long ago that very few people had heard the word “cryptocurrency,” and even less knew what it meant.

This is still true even in my country, Nigeria. The word "cryptocurrencies" is only popular among the younger generations.

    1. The filthy casuals write positive reviews on steam and it's clear that true gamers won't even try to review such a shallow game.

reviews/ratings because only those already inclined to like it (or who have been swayed by the already positive reviews) will bother buying it and (therefore) bother reviewing it, hence amplifying the positive ratings

    1. Unfortunately, this probably means a death knoll for this gem, at least I predict it will contribute to its slow trajectory towards insignificance/unknownness/lack-of-users.

Why? Because it is already the less popular option in this comparison: https://ruby.libhunt.com/compare-premailer-rails-vs-roadie-rails

and being actively maintained is an important factor in evaluating competing options.

So of course people will see that the premailer option is the option that is still actively maintained, is still continuing to be improved, and they'll see that this one has been relegated to dormancy/stagnancy/neglect/staleness, which will only amplify the degree/sense of abandonment it already has from its maintainer (only now it will be its users that start to abandon it, as I now have).

    1. This is a by-product of the success of Ubuntu. Whether people like it or not, most software available for Linux will target Ubuntu first. There may be packages available later for other distros / systems, but on the whole, you can be sure a software developer will target Ubuntu if they target Linux.

    1. Man, for some reason, I really like this answer. I recognize it's a bit more complicated, but it seems so useful. And given that I'm no bash expert, it leads me to believe that my logic is faulty, and there's something wrong with this methodology, otherwise, I feel others would have given it more praise. So, what's the problem with this function? Is there anything I should be looking out for here?

I think the main thing wrong with it is the eval (which I think can be changed to $("$@") and it's pretty verbose.

Also, there are more concise ways to do it that would probably appeal more to most bash experts...

      like set -x

and it does unnecessary things: why save output to a variable? Just let output go to where it would normally go...

So yeah, I can see why this solution isn't very popular. And I'm rather surprised by all the praise comments it's gotten.

    1. The formidable library of extensions is also a big draw: any browser based on Chromium can access all the third-party add-ons that help you customize your browsing according to your needs. If a development team wants to roll out an extension, it makes sense to prioritize Chrome. That’s where all the users are, and by basing your browser on Chrome, you get to ride along.

    1. So as long as a project meets the first criteria (i.e. is popular), we ought to move beyond questioning whether it deserves to exist, and instead focus on what we can do to ensure it is healthy and supported.

This is kind of the classical popularity syndrome shown in US culture and exported everywhere. Unpopular stuff could be considered worthy, even if it serves small communities. One of the big advantages of Free Software is overcoming market barriers.

    1. That which most people seek after, and which is obviously an object of contention, is also a good; for, as has been shown, that is good which is sought after by everybody, and "most people" is taken to be equivalent to "everybody."

opposite of Plato/Socrates. Popular opinion is good and right. I wish I were as optimistic
