The remaining five principles: using active learning techniques, giving prompt feedback, emphasizing time on task, communicating high expectations, and responding to diverse talents and ways of learning are consistent with the characteristics of the CoI presences.
7 principles of practice * 1. student-faculty contact in and out of class * 2. peer collaboration to expand understanding * Using active learning techiniques
- Giving prompt feedback emphasizing time on task communicating high expectations responding to diverse talents and ways of learning
-
second principle promotes peer collaboration to expand understanding
2nd principle - peer collaboration
-
student-faculty contact in and out of classes is the most important factor in student motivation and involvement. Faculty concern helps students get through rough times and keep on working. Knowing a few faculty members well enhances students’ intellectual commitment and encourages them to think about their own values and future plans
Contact outside of the classroom is difficult for both commuters in on-ground courses and online environments. Also it's becoming an issue for traditional students who are working more and more hours to reduce overall costs of education.

Imagine an old, heavy suitcase whose well-worn handles are hanging by a few threads. Thehandle is “Trust the Process” or “Story Is King”—a pithy statement that seems, on the face ofit, to stand for so much more. The suitcase represents all that has gone into the formation ofthe phrase: the experience, the deep wisdom, the truths that emerge from struggle. Too often,we grab the handle and—without realizing it—walk off without the suitcase. What’s more, wedon’t even think about what we’ve left behind. After all, the handle is so much easier to carryaround than the suitcase.
Ed Catmull analogizes the idea of pithy business statements and aphorisms as old, heavy suitcases and their handles. It's easy to grab onto the handle and walk of only with it, particularly when the weight and inconvenience of the suitcase and its actual contents are no longer attached. One needs to make sure that their comfortable old suitcase handle is still attached to the case and the valuable, hard-won wisdom of the contents inside.
-
Likewise, we “trusted the process,” but the process didn’t save Toy Story 2 either. “Trust theProcess” had morphed into “Assume that the Process Will Fix Things for Us.” It gave ussolace, which we felt we needed. But it also coaxed us into letting down our guard and, in theend, made us passive. Even worse, it made us sloppy.

ou wicked women, cease from juggling lies. You want your men. But what of them as well? They toss as sleepless in the lonely night, I’m sure of it. Hold out awhile, hold out, But persevere a teeny-weeny longer. An oracle has promised Victory
By refusing sexual connection, Lysistrata directs an unconventional attempt among women to put a stop to the Peloponnesian War. Lysistrata threatens gender norms by making us wonder who actually holds the power and what happens when the conventional is no longer seen as such. Consider the possible disruption of existing power systems and the social consequences of her scheme in a time period such as this where men obtained what seems as totalitarian power in comparison to woman.

I wonder if this isn't reading more into the decision than is there. I don't read the decision as a blanket statement. Rather it says that the claimant didn't provide evidence of creative input.Would the decision have gone differently if he had claimed creative intervention? And what if an author does not acknowledge using AI?

Now, if involved families want to reach out to a teacher, they have to rely on the school or hope an online staff directory is updated. And if teachers want to reach out to families and let them know how their students are doing in school, they need to look up their contact information and hope its up-to-date — or find alternate messaging platforms.
I completed high school about 15 years ago. Back then, most communication between parents and teachers was done by phone and mail. The default assumption by the NYCDOE that every problem needs an app or program is unexplained. Using phones and keeping contact directories up to date is something that had to be done not long ago.
-
Some class time has also been lost to teachers sitting down with students to manually show them their grades, a teacher at the school added.
Throughout my time in middle school, high school, and college, grades for tests were handed out in class and teachers had office hours for students to discuss their grades or any other issues. It is unclear to me from this article what time is being lost. Teachers can hand out grades to students just as well as they did before, and I presume that students who have questions or need additional guidance should be able to contact their teachers.
-
The Department of Education has been rolling out its own free grades, attendance and messaging applications, to replace banned third-party software that was involved in a data breach of more than 800,000 students last school year.
The NYCDOE was correct to sever its tie with third-party services, but why was the default response to build its own service? It was not long ago that there were no mobile applications for grades, attendance, and messaging.

Thus have been briefly noticed the results obtained by research in the Leipsic laboratory during the past seven years. They prove conclusively that it is possible to apply experimental methods to the study of mind. The positive results are, besides, not insignificant, and will compare favourably with what has been accomplished during the same period in many chemical, physical and physiological laboratories. An increased interest is everywhere being taken in experimental psychology, and we may hope that we shall some day have as accurate and complete knowledge of mind as of the physical world.
As experimental psychology was being pushed to evolve into new science through development of experimentation, observation, appliance of external stimuli and reaction of the psyche; the results produced equate to the ones in other scientific fields. The importance of having psychology be a natural science is to understand how an individual's psychology functions in response to the stimuli. Experimentation would allow better understanding of conscious beings. The experiments discussed provide value to adapting psychology as an experimental science that would benefit students and provide equality to psychology in comparison to a field like chemistry.

El artículo es M. Kramer, I. H. Stairs, …, G. Theureau, «Strong-field Gravity Tests with the Double Pulsar,» Physical Review X 11: 04150 (13 Dec 2021), doi: https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevX.11.041050, arXiv:2112.06795[astro-ph.HE] (13 Dec 2021); más información divulgativa en Lijing Shao, «General Relativity Withstands Double Pulsar’s Scrutiny,» Physics 14: 173 (13 Dec 2021) [web].

Handling legacy applications
- Involve students! Paid or volunteer. They can edit captions, add alt text, etc, and have first-hand perspective on student needs & experience
- Use a priority-based approach to determine how you can make the biggest impact on faculty and students
- If anything can be sunset, retire it rather than allocating resources toward overhauling
- Anything that has high usage and directly impacts learning & research activities should be hi-pri
Securing budget for a11y & promoting culture
- Focus on storytelling and "sell" the need for a11y as much as possible. Start with the "why" before trying to secure cash
- Focus on the benefits rather than threatening with negative consequences
- Diversity, Equity & Inclusion gaining traction in the higher ed world right now. Those are likely the ideal folks to partner with.
- Student experience also a more popular topic these days - tie to a11y.
- "Get in trouble" - call attention to things that aren't accessible, taking to Twitter/public forums when appropriate
Consortiums
- While the speakers on this panel don't participate in buying consortiums, lots of info sharing (if one school reviews a tool for a11y they might share the results of those audits across the consortium)
- To watch: Big 10 Alliance: Library E-Resource Accessibility
Tools used to evaluate a11y and share results back to content owners
- Enterprise tools allow for more robust reporting than free tools
- Using built-in a11y tools in Canvas, Blackboard Ally
- Axe & Deque are popular tools
Getting Faculty buy-in
- Teaching & Learning with Tech groups help with outreach
- Make a11y part of conversation about course design & pedagogy
What initiatives are you excited about for 2021? And If you could recommend ONE change to improve web a11y in higher ed, what would that be?
- Rutgers: Initiatives: New procurement process, Ally rollout, and mandatory training for IT. The one recommended change: awareness.
- U Chicago: Initiatives: Scaling up use of enterprise tool, training for IT staff & faculty. 1 Recommended change: integrating a11y into processes from beginning.
- U Mich: launching a11y audit team, including hiring students. 1 recommended change: don't think you have to be perfect to get started or make progress.

People are throwing around words like “unprecedented” to describe what is happening at Laurentian. I’m always careful about that because before WWII a lot of wild things happened in Canadian universities (the Honorary Bursar making off with the entire University of Manitoba endowment at the height of the Depression is my favourite). And Acadia got pretty close to this position in the last decade, though it engineered a behind-the-scenes bailout and hence never had to go to face the courts in quite this way. But maybe we shouldn’t be picky: this is still a big effing deal and we should treat it as such.
There is a great deal of history of poor management of Canadian Academic Institutions. That would be a pretty cool area to include in research!

How? Is this because embedded resources (YouTube, etc.) will send information to their host sites? Is this process automatic on displaying the padlet or is it something that would happen on clicking the resource?
A partial answer below addresses this - this does appear to create engagement trackable through those original sites. "You may access Third Party Services through the Service, for example by watching a YouTube video on a padlet. "

""Long before the pandemic, I had reduced the value of midterms and final exams to 30% of the grade in an online versions of a science course, with formative quizzing, discussion fora, short writing assignments, exam-style essay questions and a one or more short (2-6 page) essays making up 70%. The only difference between this and a blended version of the course was that online discussion fora were reduced to a no credit chat function, and that classroom discussions were prompted by clicker questions and a few collaborative short writing assignments on index cards. I even gave credit small credit for for bringing in questions at the start of class that led to students engaging with each other at the start of class. I gave online formative objective quizzes and at least a few summative exams online in both versions of the class. To minimize cheating, online quiz and exam questions chosen were pulled from topic-specific question banks and then randomized by the LMS; even the responses to MC questions were randomized where possible. To maximize learning and reduce stress, I timed the assessments to allow at lest 2 minutes per questions and explicitly told students that he quizzes and exams were open book and collaborative; also, students could take the quizzes twice and get the higher of the scores. I usually gave the final exam in class, in which case the only stress-reducers were a 10%-of-grade valuation and 2 minutes per question (essay questions had already been done online). In all cases, students needing extra time got it.
I am retired and was not forced by COVID-19 to teach online. I'd like to think that my colleagues will undertake deliberate course redesign during quieter times, just for pedagogic reasons. Those of us who enjoy F2F teaching (I, for one) will then be prepared to move their classes online as an expedient and not a jaw-dropping challenge during a future grand disruption of life... even including 'timed exams'""

Our primary goal must be to create as rich an academic experience as possible, in whatever form that will take, while preparing to bring us back together at the earliest feasible moment. No doubt social distancing techniques will be with us for some time, which, of course, complicates the logistics of the return. Taking these and other factors into account, we have made one key decision: to prepare to use the three upcoming academic terms—fall 2020, spring 2021, and summer 2021—as a unit of time in order to provide us with the greatest amount of flexibility in organizing our educational experiences. By leveraging a longer period of time, we will be able to de-densify our campus so that all students may experience much, if not most, of their coursework in person over the arc of the three terms. While this is just the beginning of a University-wide effort to determine the specifics of the academic year, we now have the capacity to tap into the rich expertise and creativity of our University leaders and faculty to shape the substance and content of this one-time arrangement. By July 1, Ira Katznelson, our spectacular deans, and I will have more details to share about how the three terms will be composed.

That was Jen Heemstra’s experience. Heemstra, an associate professor in chemistry at Emory University, was already giving open-book, open-note exams. That practice stems from her conviction that the skill students will really need is accessing and applying information, not memorizing it. This semester, she and her co-instructor took an additional step: giving students more time.

Using Technology to Help First-Gen Students
This article highlights the need for and benefits of implementing more technology tools to support first-generation college students' learning, engagement, and success. For many first-gen students, especially those from low-income backgrounds, the transition to college can be challenging; this leads to lower retention rates, performance, and confidence. The authors, drawing off of research, suggest mobile devices and Web 2.0 technologies to prevent these challenges. Example of such tools include dictionary and annotation apps that are readily-accessible and aid in students' understanding of material. Fist-gen students can also use social media apps (Twitter, Facebook, etc.) to maintain supportive connections with family, peers, and mentors. Rating: 8/10

Transforming
I like this idea. There is a closed-ness to most rubrics that I've encountered, where goals and measures of mastery are determined without learner input. "Transforming" implies a further step along a journey rather than an endpoint, and a process that is under an individual's own control.

I would ague that becoming a good reader helps a student become a good writer. Looking at a situation through the eyes of an another writer, allows the reader to view things, like a sunrise, differently. sometimes, you can gain a different appreciation for the same idea or thing.
-
In a real world setting, with all of the focus on state testing, in-class time for independent reading may be limited. A teacher could start a lunchtime reading group or before or after school reading group. Work with local libraries to sponsor reading clubs. Anything to promote reading.
-
This is key! To find something that interests your student can become the bridge to help a student begin to love reading.
-
Reading aloud allows the listener to use their imagination without doing the "work" of reading. This coordination of imagination and comprehension help to build a stronger understanding of the material.
-
This can be true; however, when testing is occurring and the student is asked to read, comprehend and answer, they may not have "background knowledge.
-
Is it just the cognitive development or could other factors play a roll in how a reader evaluates a given text?

With $50 million going to people who do not have contact with students, the data belies the district’s branding of “Students First” and “Team DPS.”
The bias that has been cited by critics wishing to undermine the general argument of this article (and similar articles, blogs, social media claims, etc), is that figures being shared for expenditures on non-teaching staff are misleading because they include funding positions such as nurses who are in schools every day providing vital services directly to students. I believe this is critique is factual.
On the other hand, there are claims that the total amount spent on administrative staff is dramatically under-reported as DPS classifies certain staff as school-based who in fact serve in roles that are central admin in nature. Whether this is intentional deception or aligned with standard accounting practices probably depends on who you ask. Either way, I believe this claim is also true. At the risk of offering annotations that qualify as "what aboutism" I include the point here because it is possible that the amounts that critics cite as being spent on staff that do not interact with students may actually be significantly less than what DPS is actually spending.
-
in early 2008, there were only three people handling press relations for the district. There are now eleven–making $700,000 a year. The full communications shop numbers thirty-seven, with a payroll of nearly $2 million.
In an age of shrinking News Room budgets, there is huge power to having a strong Communications department as reporters of local news can be reduced to writers who are expected to crank out an unrealistic amount of content and therefore rely on press releases for turnkey stories. I have first-hand knowledge of this dynamic: when I worked a marketing internship, I saw my exact language appear in the local paper under a reporter's byline multiple times.
While there is clear benefit to the District's administration when it comes to exerting ownership of the public narrative, it is worth asking how this serves students and whether it is in fact in the public's best interest to use public funds in order to manipulate the news coverage the public relies on for learning about the district's efficacy in educating area youth.

It is our failure to internalize the idea that people who work for edtech companies are our colleagues and our partners which is at the root of much of disconnect that I see across the school / vendor divide.
I came to this article through an Audrey Watters Tweet critique, but actually think this is a reasonable argument. It does not necessarily mean turning off the critical lens when evalutating ed-tech. It does mean turning criticism into conversation.

This is not to say that those of us in higher ed are immune from market forces,
Right?! Or neo-liberalism.

We should not conflate the logic of short-term profit maximization with the values of the people who go to work at for-profit edtech companies.

You can listen to the “I Love My Label” playlist on Spotify, but you should support artists by buying their music. Unless it's Metallica. Then share freely.
Badass.
-
counterintuitively perhaps less “personalized.”
But isn't the point that is is more (or more actually) "personalized"?
-
“Personalization” might sound like it’s designed especially for us; but “personalization” is an algorithm based on a profile, on a category, on a label.
This is a powerful argument. But could a proliferation of labels, enabled by computational power, better approach personalization?
I've been thinking about a similar idea in relation to the music industry/algorithm while reading the above: are Spotify/Netflix recommendations looking for the hit? Or are they looking for musical/filmic suggestions that will keep me individually as a customer? I'm much more compelled by that model than what's offered on top 40 radio or the megaplex.
-
Algorithms and analytics will “personalize” our world, we’re told. The problem, of course, is that the algorithms and the analytics also make everything sound the same.
I'd love to just accept this argument, but want there to be more evidence. No doubt there are more radical forms of self-education, but isn't it true to some degree that there is personalization in, say, adaptive learning programs?
-
What happens in the face of an algorithmic education to intellectual curiosity?
Fair enough, but is it either/or or both/and. I'm happy to be recommended a new band by Spotify, but ultimately will make the call if I like it or not, perhaps even clicking a reaction so that the algorithm gets better? Or is that a fantasy?...I'm also not going to be deaf to my friends recommendations, etc. that might also direct my musical curiosity.

Little by little the subversive features of the computer were eroded away: Instead of cutting across and so challenging the very idea of subject boundaries, the computer now defined a new subject; instead of changing the emphasis from impersonal curriculum to excited live exploration by students, the computer was now used to reinforce School’s ways. What had started as a subversive instrument of change was neutralized by the system and converted into an instrument of consolidation.
Wow, This is a great quote, and so apt in this new context of the rise of the LMS.

Once something sells, than we hear it and echoes of it again and again and again and again.

No one – well, except my parents, I guess – knew how many times I played that 45 of Autograph’s “Turn Up the Radio,” how many times I rewound the cassette to replay Guns & Roses’ “Welcome to the Jungle.” But now the software knows
This seems empowering to me (or potentially so)...

Different from predicting what songs I might like.

Imagine having at least part of your virtual learning environment (VLE) open, not just for current students (and even current students usually can't see all the teaching that might be useful to them) but for non-students, prospective students, or staff members who want to know what's happening down the road, across the country, in that academic department that interests them. NetworkED 2020 Watch Donna at NetworkED 2020: The London University, as she asks 'what if all of London were a networked University?'There would be so much potential for seeing the different ways in which departments are teaching, for instance. Which departments of biology are doing what in their labs? What theoretical approaches are they taking?
This to me is more transparent than open where the world outside can see,
In this context open to me is more about connecting, communicating, learning together and from each other. it's people can walk in on their own or be invited in, people inside can go explore and visit others
Important: Open to me is much more than that still. I remember the Vconnecting we had during OpenEd15 : No consensus on what "Open" means yet.

Grades are important. There is a ton of pressure for students to get those good grades, whether it’s from your parents, siblings, friends, or even yourself.
Maybe this is one area that could be changed to alleviate some of the stress. The whole approach to the assessment process should be re-examined (pardon the pun).

Technology can help students fill in the vast blank spaces on their mental maps. But it cannot, on its own, create a safe space that encourages kids to ask tough questions.
