dreaming can be seen as the "default" position for the activated brain
for - dream theory - dreaming as default state of brain
- Dreaming can be seen as the "default" position for the activated brain
- when it is not forced to focus on
- physical and
- social reality by
- (1) external stimuli and
- (2) the self system that reminds us of
- who we are,
- where we are, and
- what the tasks are
- that face us.
Question - I wonder what evolutionary advantage dreaming would bestow to the first dreaming organisms? - why would a brain evolve to have a default behaviour with no outside connection? - Survival is dependent on processing outside information. There seems to be a contradiction here - I wonder what opinion Michael Levin would have on this theory?

Die Biden-Administration hat die Genehmigung des LNG-Terminals Calcasieu Pass 2 gestoppt, um die Klimawirkung des Projekts zu prüfen. Die Entscheidung gilt als Sieg von Klima-Aktivist:innen. - What is more lacking, however,
- are approaches to transformation

- multiple (and necessarily unique) contexts
- to provide a framework for building such action strategies.
- Here I would introduce the concepts of transformation catalysts
- who build effective, purposeful transformation systems
- using three general processes of
- connecting,
- cohering, and
- amplifying.
-
Doing that requires new approaches to organizing for transformation where multiple initiatives connect, cohere, and amplify their individual and collective transformative action

- for us to learn or know everything that we need to know
- for bringing about purposeful system change
- towards desired and broadly shared aspirations
- for a more
- equitable,

- ecologically flourishing
- world.
- The key question before us is
- how to become transformation catalysts
- that work with numerous associated
- initiatives and
- leaders
- to form
- purposeful and
- action-oriented
- transformation systems
- that build on the collective strength inherent
- in the many networks already working towards transformation.
- Doing that requires new approaches
- to organizing for transformation
- where multiple initiatives

Comment - indyweb / Indranet is ideally suited for this - seeing the mention of individual and collective in a sentence surfaced the new Deep Humanity concept of individual collective gestalt that is intrinsic to the epistemological foundation of the Indyweb / Indranet - This is reflected in the words to describe the Indyweb / Indranet as people-centered and interpersonal

From an organizational standpoint, the beauty of sermons is that each revolves around a specific theme. Accordingly, King could devote a single folder to each topic. He accumulated 166 folders, each with a title like “Loving your Enemies” (folder 1), “Why the Christian must Oppose Segregation” (folder 87), “Mental Slavery” (folder 113), and “The Misuse of Prayer” (folder 166). These folders contain King’s outlines; source material, like clippings from books; and drafts.
In addition to his card index, Martin Luther King, Jr. compiled a collection of 166 folders organized around various topics which he used to organize outlines, clippings, pages from books, and other source materials as well as drafts of sermons or speeches on those topics.
To some extent these folders are just larger format repositories mirroring the topical arrangements of his card index.

this is whitehead's fallacy of misplaced concreteness
for - key insight - Whitehead's fallacy of misplaced concreteness - adjacency - fallacy of misplaced concreteness - climate denialism - mistrust in science - polycrisis - Deep Humanity
- the worry for Goethe and whitehead is that
- we forget sometimes with the typical scientific method that = we can only ever apply concepts derived from our empirical experience
- and so if we're trying to understand experience as if it were really
- an illusion produced by
- collisions of particles or
- brain chemistry or
- something that we can never in principle experience
- an illusion produced by
- what we're doing is
- applying concepts derived from our experience
- to an imagined realm that
- we think is beyond experience
- but it's not
- This is Whitehead's fallacy of misplaced concreteness.
key insight - Whitehead's fallacy of misplaced concreteness - This helps explain the rising rejection of science from the masses. I didn't realize there was already a name for the phenomena responsible for the emergence of collective denialist behavior
adjacency - between - fallacy of misplaced concreteness - increasing collective rejection of science in the polycrisis - adjacency statement - Whitehead's fallacy of misplaced concreteness exactly names and describes - the growing trend of a populus rejection of climate science (climate denialism), COVID vaccine denialism, exponential growth of conspiracy theory and misinformation - because of the inability for non-elites and elites alike to concretize abstractions the same way that elite scientists and policy-makers do - Research papers have shown that the knowledge deficit model which was relied upon for decades was not accurate representation of climate denialism - Yet, I would hold that Whitehead's fallacy of misplaced concretism plays a role here - This mistrust in science is rooted in this fallacy as well as progress traps - Deep Humanity is quite steeped in Whitehead's process relational ontology and the fallacy of misplaced concreteness requires mass education for a sustainable transition - This abstract concreteness is everywhere: - Shift from Ptolemy's geocentric worldview to the Copernican heliocentric worldview - Now we are told that the sun is not fixed, but is itself rotating around the Milky Way with billions of other galaxies - scientific techniques like radiocarbon dating for dating objects in deep time - climate science - atomic physics - quantum physics - distrust of vaccines, which we cannot see - Timothy Morton's hyperobjects is related to this fallacy of misplaced concreteness. - "Seeing is believing" but we cannot directly experience the ultra large or ultra small. So we have scientific language that draws parallels to that, but it is not a direct experience. - - Those not steeped in years or decades of science have the very real option of feeling that the concepts are fallacies and don't hold as much weight as that which they can experience directly, even though those concepts have obviously produced artefacts that they use, like cellphones, the internet and airplanes.
- the worry for Goethe and whitehead is that
-

-
i want to now uh introduce the key concept in in whitehead's mature metaphysics concrescence
for - key insight - concrescence - definition - concrescence - Whitehead - definition - The many become the one - Whitehead - definition - Res Potentia - Tim Eastman - definition - superject - Whitehead - definition - moment of satisfaction - Whitehead - definition - dipolar - Whitehead - definition - ingression - Whitehead definition - CONCRESCENCE - is the description of the phases of the iterative process by which reality advances from the past into the present then into the future - this definition is metaphysical and applies to all aspects of reality
-
Concrescence is the process by which
- THE MANY BECOME THE ONE and
- THE MANY ARE INCREASED BY ONE
- The "many" here refers to the past
- the perished objects in the past environment
-
There's another domain that whitehead makes reference to
- He's a platonist in this sense, though he's a reformed platonist
- He makes reference to this realm of eternal objects which for him are pure possibilities
- i was mentioning Tim Eastman earlier
- He calls this domain "RES POTENTIA", the realm of possibilities which have not yet been actualized
- And so for Whitehead
- the realm of possibility is infinite
- the realm of actuality is finite
- In the realm of actuality, there's a limited amount of certain types of experience which have been realized
- but the realm of actuality draws upon this plenum of possibility and
- it's because there is this plenum of possibility in relationship to the realm of actuality that
- novelty is possible
- new things can still happen we're not just constantly repeating the past
-
Whitehead describes the process of concrescence or each drop of experience as DIPOLAR, having two poles:
- a physical pole and
- a mental pole
-
Each concrescence or drop of experience begins with the physical pole
- where the perished objects of the past environment are apprehended or felt and
- these feelings of the past grow together into this newly emerging drop of experience
- and then in the process of their growing together
- the actualized perished objects of the past environment
- are brought into comparison with eternal objects or pure potentials possibilities and
- these possibilities INGRESS so
there's
- INGRESSION of eternal objects and
- PREHENSION of past actualities
- INGRESSION of potentials PREHENSIONS of past actualities
-
and what the ingression of eternal objects do is provide each occasion of experience, each concrescence with
- the opportunity to interpret the past differently
- to say maybe it's not like that maybe it's like this
- and so these ingressions come into the mental pole
-
If the physical pole is what initiates the experience of each concrescing occasion
- the mental pole is is a subsequent process that compares
- what's been felt in the past with
- what is possible alternatives that could be experienced that are not given yet in the past
- the mental pole is is a subsequent process that compares
-
The subjective form is how the occasion fills the past
- The subjective aim is what draws the many feelings of the past towards the unification and the mental pole
- where
- the ingression of eternal objects and
- the feelings of past actualities
- are brought together into what Whitehead calls this MOMENT OF SATISFACTION
- where
- it's the culmination of the process of concrescence
- where a new perspective on the universe is achieved - This is the many have become one
- They are increased by one when the satisfaction is achieved
- It's a new perspective on the whole
- As soon as this new perspective is achieved
- it becomes a SUPERJECT which is not a subject enjoying its own experience anymore
- it's a perished subject
- The superject is the achieved perspective that has been experienced
- but then perishes itself int a superject-hood to become
- one among the many that will be inherited by the next moment of experience, the next concrescence and
- This superject has objective immortality in the sense that
- every subsequent concrescence will inherit the satisfaction achieved by the prior concrescences
-
And so this is the most general account in Whitehead's view that we can offer
- of the nature of reality
- the nature of the passage of nature
- the movement
- out of the past
- through the present and
- into the future
-
Experience is always in the present and the satisfaction that is achieved by each moment of concrescence is enjoyed in the present
- but as soon as we achieve that
- it perishes and the next moment of concrescence arises to inherit what was achieved
- and this is an iterative process
- it's repeating constantly and it's cumulative
- It's a process of growth
- building on what's been achieved in the past
-
-
whitehead says that philosophy is an attempt to express the infinity of the universe in terms of the limitations of language
for - Whitehead's philosophy - Whitehead - limitations of language - Indra's Net - Whitehead - process relational ontology
-
Whitehead says that
- philosophy is an attempt to express the infinity of the universe
- in terms of the LIMITATIONS OF LANGUAGE
- philosophy is an attempt to express the infinity of the universe
-
And i think this image of the spiderweb with the dewdrops each reflecting the others is the perfect analogy for whitehead's ontology
- You may have heard of indra's net from madhyamaka buddhism
- the idea of dependent co-origination of all things
- that nothing has independent abiding existence
- but is rather caught up in a network of
- relations or
- causes and conditions
- but is rather caught up in a network of
- and so you can't remove any of the nodes in the network without destroying the node and totally changing the rest of the network that it was embedded within
- that nothing has independent abiding existence
- the idea of dependent co-origination of all things
- This is the key to what a process RELATIONAL ONTOLOGY is trying to reveal to us about the nature of reality
- Dependent co-origination or you could say
- the inter-penetration of all things
- though in Whitehead's cosmology there really are no
things
- if by thing you mean an inert isolated entity
- Whiteheads ontology is really composed of events or processes
- You could say and these processes for whitehead are
- drops of experience
- So for whitehead, there's no node in the network of reality that is not there for itself
- It is not enjoying some degree of experience or subjectivity or has some degree or capacity for feeling
-
-
there's a little bit of novelty that each drop of experience adds to the network out of which it emerges from
for - definition - drop of experience - Whitehead

epiphany - adjacency between - Lifework and evolutionary nature of the individual - - people-centered Indyweb -- Alfred North Whitehead's ideas and life history - adjacency statement - Listening to the narrator speaking about Whitehead's work from a historical perspective brought up the association with the Indyweb's people-centered design - This is especially salient given that Whitehead felt education played such a critical role in determining the future course of humanity - If Whitehead were alive, he would likely appreciate the Indyweb design because it is based on the human being as a process rather than a static entity, - hence renaming human being to human INTERbeCOMing, a noun replaced by a verb - Indyweb's people-centered design and default temporal, time-date recording of ideas as they occur provides inherent traceability to the evolution of an individual's consciousness - Furthermore, since it is not only people-centered but also INTERPERSONAL, we can trace the evolution of ideas within a social network. - Since individual and collective intelligence are both evolutionary and intertwingled, they are both foundational in Indyweb's design ethos. - In particular, Indyweb frames the important evolutionary process of - having a conversation with your old self - as a key aspect of the evolutionary growth of the individual's consciousness

summary - Snell is a lawyer who successfully prosecuted Trump, representing a class action lawsuit by the former students of Trump University - The book documents how he was able to successfully prosecute Trump and the challenges him and his team had to overcome - It provides a fascinating picture of how pathological elites operate, and how a perversion of power allows elites to effectively by silence, until the damage inflicted is so severe that - It sheds light on how corruption cultivated in business can scale to become political fascism. This is how fascism develops, silently and incrementally, until it becomes too late and entire society then pays - In the age of elites, Donald Trump, who comes from the elite class himself, is able to distort truth to such an extent that the very class that his class (elites) exploits the most (the working class) are convinced that he is their savior. - It also shows the dynamics of how power corrupts. Ideological synergy enables his allies to look the other way and ignore the extreme ethical baggage he carries, reinforcing the cliche - "the means justifies the ends"

cheap energy is a hell of a drug. we found it 200 years ago, our trip peaked about 20 years ago, and now we are getting sober, and most people hate it, because most people are stupid and have no "plan B", and when SHTF they will commit suicide, and before SHTF they will work for a suicide-culture to accelerate the collapse.
i already had this intuition 20 years ago at the age of 15... i spent some years on self-study of psychology, to make this intuition more conscious. my "final answer" on all the problems of this world is my book: pallas. who are my friends. group composition by personality type. because obviously, most people are too stupid to choose their real friends, and instead are exploited by enemies aka "false friends".
idiots are insulted by the radical simplicity of my proposed solution, and instead, they continue their doomed-to-fail journey to find complex-but-wrong solutions... idiots are tragic heros, fighting lost wars, dragging everyone else down to their stupid level

by far the most illuminating to me is the idea that mental causation works from virtual futures towards the past 00:33:17 whereas physical causation works from the past towards the future and these two streams of causation sort of overlap in the present

claim - Lifetime practitioners of Tibetan meditation claim they have a primary sensation of their own impending death suggestion - Suggest to Michael Levin to investigate such phenomena from a multi-scale competency architecture perspective - What else can the expert meditators directly experience? And how do they achieve this? How can deep contemplative practice result in such profound experiences? Would expert meditators resonate with Levin's framework?

summary - Father Tiso and his catholic lineage combined with scholarship in Tibetan studies places him in a unique position for interfaith dialogue - His research interest in investigating the extraordinary and unexplained Tibetan meditation phenomena of Rainbow Body manifested by the greatest practitioners at the time of death (including contemporary ones) sheds light on the Rainbow Body phenomena in many spiritual traditions and challenges the scientific community to come up with an explanation for it. - If scientifically proven true, it offers an extraordinary possibility of human potential - Contemplation could be the practice technique that could directly bridge normal human consciousness with the microscopic world around us, which to date, is only accessible through scientific instrumentation.
question - Does deep contemplative practice offers a direct access to the microscopic reality? - If so, how does it accomplish this direct communication with human cells, and indeed, even the universe itself? - Father Tiso shares centuries old recorded visual drawings of experiences reported by Rainbow Body practitioners and speculates whether these drawings represent direct experience of the cellular scale of our human form - Indeed, could it even be at the quantum level of experience, since rainbows are an optical phenomenal?

I started reading Parable of the Sower exactly one year to the date mentioned at the start of the book at the public library in Pasadena where she grew up. As a 49 year old father of a 12 year old daughter, it was a much more visceral and eerie experience than I could ever have expected. She has forever changed the perspective I have driving down the streets of our shared neighborhood.
I'm not sure if they'll have open remote registrations for it or if it will only be broadcast locally, but the local Octavia Butler Book Club has an upcoming zoom session on Feb 24 which can be found in the Pasadena Public Library's newsletter (.pdf). It will feature Dr. Kendra Parker via Zoom from Georgia to present her lecture: "Walking a Mile in Her Shoes: Exploring Octavia Butler's Archives."
The nearby Huntington Library houses her papers and some of her materials there may be accessible online.

Christian Lawson-Perfect @christianp@mathstodon.xyz@liseo there are lots of ways of representing colours numerically. The most basic way that computers use is to use a number between 0 and 255 for each of the red, green and blue components, called RGB encoding. The problem with that is that colours that look close to each other don't necessarily have close RGB values. There are other colour spaces which try to get closer to the ideal of having similar colours close together. Oklab, which I use in this tool, is currently the best for that.
https://mastodon.social/@christianp@mathstodon.xyz/111759984202211741
Is there a way to mathematically encode colors, similar to RGB perhaps, such that the colors in nearby neighborhoods all have values close to each other?

Instance methods Instances of Models are documents. Documents have many of their own built-in instance methods. We may also define our own custom document instance methods. // define a schema const animalSchema = new Schema({ name: String, type: String }, { // Assign a function to the "methods" object of our animalSchema through schema options. // By following this approach, there is no need to create a separate TS type to define the type of the instance functions. methods: { findSimilarTypes(cb) { return mongoose.model('Animal').find({ type: this.type }, cb); } } }); // Or, assign a function to the "methods" object of our animalSchema animalSchema.methods.findSimilarTypes = function(cb) { return mongoose.model('Animal').find({ type: this.type }, cb); }; Now all of our animal instances have a findSimilarTypes method available to them. const Animal = mongoose.model('Animal', animalSchema); const dog = new Animal({ type: 'dog' }); dog.findSimilarTypes((err, dogs) => { console.log(dogs); // woof }); Overwriting a default mongoose document method may lead to unpredictable results. See this for more details. The example above uses the Schema.methods object directly to save an instance method. You can also use the Schema.method() helper as described here. Do not declare methods using ES6 arrow functions (=>). Arrow functions explicitly prevent binding this, so your method will not have access to the document and the above examples will not work.
Certainly! Let's break down the provided code snippets:
1. What is it and why is it used?
In Mongoose, a schema is a blueprint for defining the structure of documents within a collection. When you define a schema, you can also attach methods to it. These methods become instance methods, meaning they are available on the individual documents (instances) created from that schema.
Instance methods are useful for encapsulating functionality related to a specific document or model instance. They allow you to define custom behavior that can be executed on a specific document. In the given example, the
findSimilarTypes
method is added to instances of theAnimal
model, making it easy to find other animals of the same type.2. Syntax:
Using
methods
object directly in the schema options:javascript const animalSchema = new Schema( { name: String, type: String }, { methods: { findSimilarTypes(cb) { return mongoose.model('Animal').find({ type: this.type }, cb); } } } );
Using
methods
object directly in the schema:javascript animalSchema.methods.findSimilarTypes = function(cb) { return mongoose.model('Animal').find({ type: this.type }, cb); };
Using
Schema.method()
helper:javascript animalSchema.method('findSimilarTypes', function(cb) { return mongoose.model('Animal').find({ type: this.type }, cb); });
3. Explanation in Simple Words with Examples:
Why it's Used:
Imagine you have a collection of animals in your database, and you want to find other animals of the same type. Instead of writing the same logic repeatedly, you can define a method that can be called on each animal instance to find similar types. This helps in keeping your code DRY (Don't Repeat Yourself) and makes it easier to maintain.
Example:
```javascript const mongoose = require('mongoose'); const { Schema } = mongoose;
// Define a schema with a custom instance method const animalSchema = new Schema({ name: String, type: String });
// Add a custom instance method to find similar types animalSchema.methods.findSimilarTypes = function(cb) { return mongoose.model('Animal').find({ type: this.type }, cb); };
// Create the Animal model using the schema const Animal = mongoose.model('Animal', animalSchema);
// Create an instance of Animal const dog = new Animal({ type: 'dog', name: 'Buddy' });
// Use the custom method to find similar types dog.findSimilarTypes((err, similarAnimals) => { console.log(similarAnimals); }); ```
In this example,
findSimilarTypes
is a custom instance method added to theAnimal
schema. When you create an instance of theAnimal
model (e.g., a dog), you can then callfindSimilarTypes
on that instance to find other animals with the same type. The method uses thethis.type
property, which refers to the type of the current animal instance. This allows you to easily reuse the logic for finding similar types across different instances of theAnimal
model.
This image resonates with the earliest description of an English poet, which we find in Bede’s Ecclesiastical History of the English People, completed in the year 731. Bede, a prolific monk and scholar from the monastery of Jarrow in Northumbria, provides an account of a certain Caedmon, an illiterate brother at the abbey at Whitby, who is visited by God and taught to sing beautiful poetry. Caedmon remains an oral poet, but his literate brothers write down his poetry for him.
-
To illustrate this liminal space between the oral and the literate, here is an illustration from the Vespasian Psalter, a manuscript from the late eighth century, that depicts King David singing the Psalms: David is accompanying himself with a harp, and there are horn players and a couple of people apparently clapping along with the beat. But there are also two scribes behind him, who are writing down his song. Here we have a representation of a culture in a transitional stage between oral and literate transmission of poetry—the oral performance of a poem and the written transmission of the same poem are both present in the image.
Relation needs two labels, because of its direction ("blocks" vs. "blocked by").
There’s not much of a market for what I’m describing.
There is, actually. Look at Google Docs, Office 365, etc. Those are all an end-run around the fact that webdevs are self-serving and haven't prioritized making desktop publishing for casual users a priority.
The webdev industry subverts users' ability to publish to the Web natively, and Google, MS et al subvert native Web features in order to capture users.
The users are there.
Code block Metadata block Note block MR block (we should still be able to interact with the MR as a whole thing, e.g. leaving a generic comment on the whole thing)
-
A user wants to comment on a single parameter name in a function. It is highlighted as a unique part of the syntax tree, and they're not happy with the particular name the author of the MR chose. Problem: The user can only comment on the entire line, because "lines" are considered the most fundamental building block in our Diffs UI.
-
A reviewer would like to open a discussion on the MR description because they disagree with some of the conclusions, but want more clarification. Problem: The only way to have a conversation about the MR metadata (like title, description, labels, etc.) is to open a generic note on the whole MR. There's no way to scope a discussion to a part of the MR.
This is true for other tasks besides design — frontend implementation, backend implementation, QA, etc — would we create unique types for each? Our suggestion here to teams today is often to break down the work into issues, or now tasks, for each uniquely assignable/trackable piece of work. You could do the same for design, where the task or issue is used to track status, discuss progress and maybe even WIP, but is focused on being SSOT for status rather than design.
-
Personally I think we could get a ton more benefits and would also be able to pull new users into our platform by finding better ways to integrate/link/connect/display Figma in our work item objects. Today the biggest downside for "Design management" is that it's basically just a copy of what's happening inside of Figma that has to be manually kept in sync and requires users to constantly switch back and forth:
These can then be used to develop a definition that states the essence of the living thing—what makes it what it is and thus cannot be altered; the essence is, of course, immutable.
The Aristotelian method dominated classification until the 19th century. His scheme was, in effect, that the classification of a living thing by its nature—i.e., what it really is, as against superficial resemblances—requires the examination of many specimens, the discarding of variable characters (since they must be accidental, not essential), and the establishment of constant characters.
Searching as exploration. White and Roth [71 ,p.38] define exploratory search as a “sense making activity focusedon the gathering and use of information to foster intellectual de-velopment.” Users who conduct exploratory searches are generallyunfamiliar with the domain of their goals, and unsure about howto achieve them [ 71]. Many scholars have investigated the mainfactors relating to this type of dynamic task, such as uncertainty,creativity, innovation, knowledge discovery, serendipity, conver-gence of ideas, learning, and investigation [2, 46, 71].These factors are not always expressed or evident in queriesor questions posed by a searcher to a search system.
Sometimes, search is not rooted in discovery of a correct answer to a question. It's about exploration. Serendipity through search. Think Michael Lewis, Malcolm Gladwell, and Latif Nasser from Radiolab. The randomizer on wikipedia. A risk factor of where things trend with advanced AI in search is an abandonment of meaning making through exploration in favor of a knowledge-level pursuit that lacks comparable depth to more exploratory experiences.
It's better than Chrome, sure. But Firefox, and Mozilla as a company, are going downhill and have been for a few years. How can they be truly against the kind of web that Google pushes for if they're entirely reliant on their partnership with Google to be featured as the default search engine?
-
Also just by observing what they’re doing it becomes pretty clear. For example: Facebook recently purchased full-page ads on major newspapers entirely dedicated to “denounce” Apple. Why? Because Apple has built a system-level feature on iPhones that allows users to very easily disable every kind of advertising tracking and profiling. Facebook absolutely relies on being able to track you and profile your interests, so they immediately cooked up some cynical reasons why Apple shouldn’t be allowed to do this.But the truth is: if Facebook is fighting against someone on privacy matters, that someone is probably doing the right thing.
Die nördlichen Wälder Kanadas wurden seit 1976 durch Holzfällen erheblich geschädigt, wie eine neue Studie über zwei Provinzen zeigt. Nicht nur ging der Waldbestand erheblich zurück, die übrig gebliebenen Gebiete sind durch Fragmentierung für den Klimaschutz weniger relevant als die ursprünglichen Wälder. Der Nachhaltigkeitsbegriff der kanadischen Regierung sei vor allem an den Bedürfnissen der Holzindustrie orientiert, stellt der Hauptautor der Studie fest. Summary
- This talk really emphasizes the need for the Stop Reset Go / Deep Humanity Wealth to Wellth program
- Interviewee Marjorie Kelly started Business Ethics magainze in 1987 to show the positive side of business After 30 years, she found that it was still tinkering at the edges. Why? - because it wasn't addressing the fundamental issue.
- Why there hasn't been noticeable change in spite of all these progressive efforts is because we avoided questioning the fundamental assumption that maximizing returns to shareholders and gains to shareholder portfolios is good for people and planet.**** It turns out that it isn't. It's fundamentally bad for civilization and has played a major role in shaping today's polycrisis.
- Why wealth supremacy is entangled with white supremacy
- Financial assets are the subject
- Equity and bonds use to be equal to GDP in the 1950s.
- Now it's 5 times as much
- Financial assets extracts too much from common people
- Question: Families are swimming in debt. Who owns all this financial debt? ...The financial elites do.
-
DESCRIPTION: 7 MYTHS of CAPITALISM
- The Myth of Maximization
- example of absurdity of maximization
- Bill Gates had $10 billion. Then he invested it and got $300 billion. There's no limit to how much wealth an individual can accumulate. It is absurd.
- example of absurdity of maximization
- Myth of the Income Statement
- Gains to capital called profit is always to be increased and
- Gains of labor is called an expense, is always to be decreased
- Myth of Materiality (also called capital bias)
- definition: capital bias
- If something impacts capital, it matters
- If something impacts society or ecology, it doesn't matter
- With the capital bias, only accumulating more capital matters. NOTHING ELSE MATTERS. This is how most accountants and CFO's view the world.
- The Myth of Maximization
-
quote: Laura Flanders
- The capital is what matters. We're aiming for more capital and nothing else really matters. That's the operating system of the economy. So the real world is immaterial to this world of wealth as held in stocks and shares and financial instruments.
-
question: frameworks for community projects
-
If our interest is to attempt to create a global collective action campaign to address our existential polycrisis, which includes the climate crisis, then how do we mobilize at the community level in a meaningful way?
-
I suggest that this must be a cosmolocal effort. Why? Knowledge sharing across all the communities will accelerate the transition of any participating local community.
- This means that we cannot rely on citizens living in small communities to construct an effective coordination framework for rapid de-escalation of the polycrisis. The capacity does not exist within small communities to build such a complex system. The system can be more effectively built before the collective action campaign is started by a virtual community of experts and ready for trial with pilot communities.
- To meet this enormous challenge, it cannot be done in an adhoc way. At this point in time, many people in many communities all around the globe know of the existential crisis we face, but if we look at the annual carbon emissions, none of the existing community efforts has made a difference in their continuing escalation.
- The knowledge required to synchronize millions of communities to have a unified wartime-scale collective action mobilization to reach decarbonization goals that the mainstream approach has not even made a dent in will be a complex problem.
- In other words, what is proposed is a partnership.
- Since we are faced with global commons problems that pose existential threats if not mitigated in 5 to 8 years, the scope of the problem is enormous.
- Super wicked problems require unprecedented levels of collaboration at every level.
- The downscaling of global planetary boundaries and doughnut economics seems the most logical way to think global, act local.
-
Building such a collaboration system requires expert knowledge. Once built, however, it requires testing in pilot communities. This is where a partnership can take place
- Suggestion:
- SRG has long entertained a collaborative open science project for grassroots polycrisis / climate crisis education - to measure and validate latest climate departure dates
- This would make climate change far more salient to the average person because of the observable trends in disruption of local economic activity connected to the local ecology due to climate impacts
- This would be a synergistic project between SRG, LCE, SoNeC, My Climate Risk hubs, ICICLE and U of Hawaii
- Our community frameworks need to go BEYOND simply adaptation though, which is what "My Climate Risk" focuses exclusively on. We need to also engage equally in climate mitigation.
Der Standard fasst Berichte der WMO, des europäischen Wetterdienstes Copernicus und des Österreichischen Alpenvereins zum Schwund der Gletscher 2022 zusammen. Die europäischen Alpengletscher verloren 2022 mehr als 5 Kubikkilometer Eis. Die Schweizer Alpengletscher haben in 20 Jahren ein Drittel ihres Eises eingebüßt. Bei einer Temperaturerhöhung um 2,7° bis 2100 würde allein durch das fast vollständige Abschmelzen der Gletscher in Mitteleuropa, den USA, Westkanada und Neuseeland der Meeresspiegel um 115mm steigen.
Adler & Hutchinson's Great Books of the Western World was an encyclopedia-based attempt to focus society on a shared history as their common ground. H. G. Wells in his World Encyclopedia thesis attempts to forge a new "moving" common ground based on newly evolving knowledge based on distilling truth out of science. Shared history is obviously much easier to dispense and spread about compared to constantly keeping a growing population up to date with the forefront of science.
How could one carefully compose and juxtapose the two to have a stronger combined effect?
How could one distribute the effects evenly?
What does the statistical mechanics for knowledge management look like at the level of societies and nations?
very carefully assem-bled with the approval of outstandingauthorities in each subject, carefully col-lated and edited, and critically presented.It would be not a miscellany but a con-centration, a clarification and a synthesis.
Compare this with Hutchins and Adler's solution undertaken just a few years following this beginning in the early 1940s and finally published in 1952: The Great Books of the Western World.
These books speak toward the idea of living well and understanding mankind, but don't have the same deeply edited and critical synthesis viewpoint.
There is no dignityyet in human history. It would be purecomedy if it were not so often tragic, 'sofrequently dismal, generally dishonora-ble, and occasionally quite horrible.
Hawk Sugano's Pile of Index Cards method is laid out visually in his Flickr account using photos of several of his cards along with descriptions of what each is for and how they work.
Record Card Icon : CircleTag : 2nd block Diary, note, account, health, weather, cook, any kind of records about us belong to this class. An individual record is so tiny and less informative. However, from view point of long time span, these records provide us a useful information because we will find a certain "pattern" between them. A feedback from the pattern improves our daily life.
How to link between Cards The "date" and "time" stamp of a cards define their "absolute name". This is why the time stamp must be unique, but not necessary to be accurate. In addition, it is easy to find a specific card, according to the stamp, if all cards are kept in chronological order. This technique was first introduced on the 2-channel.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/hawkexpress/192480328/in/album-72157594200490122/
The PoIC system allows linking of cards using date/timestamps for indexing/finding. Interestingly they were all kept in chronological order rather than in idea order as in Luhmann's zettelkasten.
What are the pros/cons of this?<br /> - more searching and hunting through cards certainly is a drawback for lack of "threaded" ideas - others...
hawkexpress apparently learned this technique on the 2-channel.
4. Cite Card Icon : Hat (something above you)Tag : 5th block Quotation, cooking recipe from book, web, tv, anything about someone else’s idea is classified into this class. Important here is distinguishing “your idea (Discovery Card)” and “someone else’s idea (Cite Card)”. Source of the information must be included in the Cite Card. A book, for example, author, year, page(s) are recorded for later use.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/hawkexpress/189972899/in/album-72157594200490122/
Despite being used primarily as a productivity tool the PoIC system also included some features of personal knowledge management with "discovery cards" and "citation cards". Discovery cards were things which contained one's own ideas while the citation cards were the ideas of others and included bibliographic information. Citation cards were tagged on the 5th block as an indicator within the system.
Question: How was the information material managed? Was it separate from the date-based system? On first blush it would appear not, nor was there a subject index which would have made it more difficult for one to find data within the system.
0. PoIC Format Move your mouse over the picture. This is the basic of PoIC Fromat. It is consisted from Tag, Icon, Title, Date and Time Stamp, and Contents. After several trial, you will remember this format easily. It's virtual template. You can start PoIC with blank card, anytime, anywhere. In this universe, there are only four class of information : Record, Discovery, GTD, and Cite.
These are more similar to zettelkasten and commonplacing traditions. They comprise the majority of the system.
adjacency between
- heart of capitalism
- self other dualism
- societal aspiration
- adjacency statement
- The narrative that underlies personal gain is the socially acquired belief in a self and other dualism.
- This is a deep psychological construct facilitated in early childhood development by what in Deep Humanity praxis is referred to as the mOTHER, the Most significant OTHER at the beginning of our journey in life.
- From that point onwards, social learning propels us to objectify the world, and in particular others. Self and other co-emerge from early childhood learning.
- As climate scientist Kevin Anderson notes, the elite 1%, responsible for an outsized ecological footprint are the result of the dominant capitalist narrative. It constitutes the social norm of "good" for most people. It is the societal aspiration from which 1% of the world population, approximately 80 million people, surface from the 8 billion as the elites in their respective field and are compensated through financial and material reward.
- This societal aspiration aligns the majority of people to peer in the same direction of trying to win the game and bubble up to the 1% to indulge the rewards of a luxury lifestyle.
- It is this same winning that will produce the next generation of 1%. They are being groomed as we speak.
- Yet, their runaway success, and especially their reward is what can seal the fate of our civilization.
- It is this societal aspiration role of capitalism as the dominant narrative that is the root generator of the next 1% and must be mitigated if we are to address the root of inequality.
its easy to get lost in complexity here, but i prefer to keep it simple: our *only* problem is overpopulation, which is caused by pacifism = civilization. *all* other problems are only symptoms of overpopulation. these "financial weapons of mass destruction" (warren buffett) have the only purpose of mass murder = to kill the 95% useless eaters. so yes, this is a "controlled demolition" aka "global suicide cult". most of us will die, but we are happy...
financial weapons of mass destruction: the useful idiots believe that they can defeat risk (or generally, defeat death) by centralization on a global scale. they want to build a system that is "too big to fail" and which will "live forever". they use all kinds of tricks to make their slaves "feel safe" and "feel happy", while subconsciously, everything is going to hell in the long run. so this is just another version of "stupid and evil people trying to rule the world". hubris comes before the fall, nothing new. their system will never work, but idiots must try... because "fake it till you make it" = constructivism, mind over matter, fantasy defeats reality, ...
the video and soundtrack are annoying, they add zero value to the monolog.
title: The Deep History of Ourselves: The Four-Billion-Year Story of How We Got Conscious Brains
- author: Joseph LeDoux
- date: Jan. 2023
doi: 0.1080/09515089.2022.2160311
ABSTRACT
- The essence of who we are depends on our brains.
- They enable us to think, to
- feel joy and sorrow,
- communicate through speech,
- reflect on the moments of our lives, and to
- anticipate,
- plan for, and
- worry about our imagined futures.
- Although some of our abilities are comparatively new, key features of our behavior have deep roots that can be traced to the beginning of life.
- By following the story of behavior, step-by-step, over its roughly four-billion-year trajectory,
- we come to understand both
- how similar we are to all organisms that have ever lived, and
- how different we are from even our closest animal relatives.
- we come to understand both
- We care about our differences because they are ours. But differences do not make us superior; they simply make us different.
-
comment
- good article to contribute to a narrative of the symbiocene and a shift of humanity to belonging to nature as one species, instead of dominating nature as the apex species
- question
- @Gyuri, Could indranet search algorithm have made the connection between this article and the symbiocene artilces in my mindplex had I not explicitly made the associations manually through my tags? It needs to be able to do this
- Also interesting to see how this materialistic outlook of consciousness
- which is similiar to the Earth Species Project work and Michael Levin's work on synthesizing new laboratory life forms to answer evolutionary questions about intelligence
- relates to nonmaterial ideas about consciousness
what i think tolkien is saying is that just as i was saying before our systems around us and our worlds are so complex that we actually will never know enough to be sure that 01:24:44 there's no grounds for hope we cannot ever know enough to be pessimists basically we cannot know enough to be pessimistic and how does gandalf put it at one point he says he this is a remarkable 01:24:57 statement i mentioned we read this a thousand times he said despair is only for those who know the future without any doubt we do not and and that for me is is the uncertainty itself 01:25:10 most people find uncertainty very scary but for me the uncertainty about the future is an enormous source of possibility it's emancipatory it means we can use our imaginations to explore alternatives
