title: Social tipping points everywhere?—Patterns and risks of overuse
- author: Manjana Miikoreit
-
date: Nov 17, 2022
-
abstract
- The last few years have witnessed an explosion of interest in the concept of social tipping points (STPs),
- understood as nonlinear processes of transformative change in social systems.
- A growing body of interdisciplinary scholarship has been focusing in particular on social tipping related to climate change.
- In contrast with tipping point studies in the natural sciences–for example
- climate tipping points and
- ecological regime shifts–
- STPs are often conceptualized as desirable, offering potential solutions to pressing problems.
- Drawing on
- a well-established definition for tipping points, and
- a qualitative review of articles that explicitly treat social tipping points as potential solutions to climate change,
- this article identifies four deleterious patterns in the application of the STP concept in this recent wave of research on nonlinear social change:
- (i) premature labeling,
- (ii) not defining system boundaries and scales of analysis,
- (iii) not providing evidence for all characteristics of tipping processes, and
- (iv) not making use of existing social theories of change.
- Jointly, these patterns create a trend of overusing the concept.
- Recognizing and avoiding these patterns of “seeing the world through tipping point glasses” is important for
- the quality of scientific knowledge generated in this young field of inquiry and for
- future science-policy interactions related to climate change.
- Future research should seek to
- identify empirical evidence for STPs while remaining open to the possibility that
- many social change processes are not instances of tipping, or that
- certain systems might not be prone to nonlinear change.
- identify empirical evidence for STPs while remaining open to the possibility that
- The last few years have witnessed an explosion of interest in the concept of social tipping points (STPs),

async vs. sync depends exactly on what you are doing in what context. If this is in a network service, you need async. For a command line utility, sync is the appropriate paradigm in most simple cases, but just knee-jerk saying "async is better" is not correct. My snippet is based on the OP snippet for context.

People have some control over the timing of their death and can hold on until after important occasions or die quickly after having lost someone important to them
I thought this was the most interesting fact because it is crazy that as humans we can get to a point in our lives where we literally decide what time is the best to die. It makes sense but also leaves me with so many questions. How is this possible? Can everyone do this? Do you have to be at the point of hospice for the to be possible? I just feel this is crazy that we can control when our time is whether or not we have a will to live. I added a link that goes deeper and adds examples of this subject from the Washington Post.

Capybara can get us part of the way there. It allows us to work with an API rather than manipulating the HTML directly, but what it provides isn't an application specific API. It gives us low-level API methods like find, fill_in, and click_button, but it doesn't provide us with high-level methods to do things like "sign in to the app" or "click the Dashboard item in the navigation bar".

Meaningful discussions may be replaced with comments about the weather or other topics of light conversation. Doctors may spend less time with patients after their prognosis becomes poor. Why do others begin to withdraw?
I chose this line and it peaked my interest because I bet there is a way to solve most cases of social death. First of all, spreading awareness to the subject will hopefully cause people to think more about their actions, such as withdrawing less from a dying family member.

Maybe once the core onError lifecycle is implemented (if maintainers decide to go that way) everyone will discover you're right and an implementation will be built in. I think that's probably what's going to happen. But until real life has proved it, it's usually best to go for the smallest most broadly applicable solution. I can definitely imagine <svelte:error> eventually being a thing, but it's a pretty dramatic change compared to an added importable function.

The key thing about the REST approach is that the server addresses the client state transitions. The state of the client is almost totally driven by the server and, for this reason, discussions on API versioning make little sense, too. All that a client should know about a RESTful interface should be the entry point. The rest should come from the interpretation of server responses.

Web3 promises rewards — maybe even a kind of justice — for “users”, but Ethereum doesn’t know anything about users, only wallets. One user can control many wallets; one bot can control many wallets; Ethereum can’t tell the difference, doesn’t particularly care. Therefore, Web3’s governance tools are appropriate for decision-making processes that approximate those of an LLC, but not for anything truly democratic, which is to say, anything that respects the uniform, unearned — unearned!—value of personhood.

Standard algorithms as a reliable engine in SaaS https://en.itpedia.nl/2021/12/06/standaard-algoritmen-als-betrouwbaar-motorblok-in-saas/ The term "Algorithm" has gotten a bad rap in recent years. This is because large tech companies such as Facebook and Google are often accused of threatening our privacy. However, algorithms are an integral part of every application. As is known, SaaS is standard software, which makes use of algorithms just like other software.
- But what are algorithms anyway?
- How can we use standard algorithms?
- How do standard algorithms end up in our software?
- When is software not an algorithm?

Finally, I think Actions are great for animations, because you will definitely need to apply the same logic to many different elements. One of my favorite examples are FLIP animations, where a change in DOM position can be animated. For example shuffling a list of items. I will not dive deep into the topic in this article: I've written about some techniques in this article about FLIP animations in React and in this article about how to create spring animations with Web Animation API. Although they are not about Svelte, at the end of the day it all boils down to manipulating the HTML element directly. And Svelte Actions are a great place to do it.

Creating a community network ontology is therefore about much more than just knowledge representation. It also requires us to think about how this conceptual knowledge model affects real-world knowledge creation and application processes, in our case concerning participatory community network mapping. Its participatory nature means that we need to think hard about how to explicitly involve the community in the construction, evolution, and use of the ontology.

How to Make a React Progressive Web Application (PWA)Eugene VolkovFrontend DeveloperKate KikidzhanCloud & SaaS Product ResearcherReactJavaScriptPWAHomeBlogDevelopmentHow to Make a React Progressive Web Application (PWA)Oct 7, 202021 min readThe early bird catches the worm. But the situation was not so favourable back in 2007 when Steve Jobs proposed the idea of web applications to be the model for iPhone Apps. Back then, the tech community was not yet ready to bring a huge interest in web apps. But since 2015, tech giants like Google and Microsoft have been preparing the tech ground for progressive web apps (or simply – PWAs). And now, PWA became a must-have technology for both giant corporations and small startups. Twitter, Starbucks, Google, and Aliexpress use progressive web apps to boost their online presence. At Codica, we have been helping our customers to develop their businesses by building robust PWA for our customers since 2015. That is why we have created this comprehensive guide on how to create a PWA with React. Also, you will see the most prominent progressive web app examples.

Best SaaS Product Ideas You Should Try in 2021Kate KikidzhanCloud & SaaS Product ResearcherSaaSStartupHomeBlogEntrepreneurshipBest SaaS Product Ideas You Should Try in 2021May 6, 202117 min readIn 2020, the cloud market and its most notable players, such as Google, Microsoft, Adobe, and Salesforce, cannot be taken lightly. Cloud software distribution, namely SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS models, invaded the technology world and will not go away any time soon. At the same time, the COVID-19 pandemic increased the importance of remote work for a business to survive, as well as high profitability. That is why the demand for SaaS solutions that tend to be more cost-effective has risen markedly. And we believe that it is better to ride the SaaS wave now rather than regret missed opportunities later. So we have prepared for you a list of SaaS product ideas that will be a great deal for cloud-based solutions for startups in 2021.

The salary for each profession varies from similar factors. What determines the salary of software developers? After reading this article, I concluded that the greatest role is played by the country in which the developer works. For example, there are countries where developer salaries are much lower, although skills are not inferior. Skills, background and many other points also affect. Enjoy reading!

The main (IMO) feature of MQTT – quality of service – doesn't make sense in our case: if a WebSocket server is down and doesn't receive broadcast messages (through HTTP/Redis/queue), it's likely not to handle client connections too.

Thanks, this was just what I was looking for! This is a perfect appropriate use of instance_eval. I do not understand the nay-sayers. If you already have your array in a variable, then sure, a.reduce(:+) / a.size.to_f is pretty reasonable. But if you want to "in line" find the mean of an array literal or an array that is returned from a function/expression — without duplicating the entire expression ([0,4,8].reduce(:+) / [0,4,8].length.to_f, for example, is abhorrent) or being required to assign to a local, then instance_eval option is a beautiful, elegant, idiomatic solution!!

Application: 3-D Shape RegistrationAn important problem in model-based recognition is to find the transformation of a set of datapoints that yields the best match of these points against a shape model. The process is oftenreferred to asdata registration. The data points are typically measured on a real object by rangesensors, touch sensors, etc., and given in Cartesian coordinates. The quality of a match is oftendescribed as the total squared distance from the data pointsto the model. When multiple shapemodels are possible, the one that results in the least total distance is then recognized as the shapeof the object.Quaternions are very effective in solving the above least-squares-based registration problem.

The non-determinism is why cache invalidation — and that other hard problem, naming things — are uniquely and intractably hard problems in computer science. Computers can perfectly solve deterministic problems. But they can’t predict when to invalidate a cache because, ultimately, we, the humans who design and build computational processes, can’t agree on when a cache needs to be invalidated.

This nav bar by Chris Coyier is a great example of something that makes more sense as a flexbox than grid.
-
Flexbox's strength is in its content-driven model. It doesn't need to know the content up-front. You can distribute items based on their content, allow boxes to wrap which is really handy for responsive design, you can even control the distribution of negative space separately to positive space.

Flexbox is for one dimensional layout (row or column). CSS grid is for two dimensional layout.

There is one situation where iframes are (almost) required: when the contents of the iframe is in a different domain, and you have to perform authentication or check cookies that are bound to that domain. It actually prevents security problems instead of creating them. For example, if you're writing a kind of plugin that can be used on any website, but the plugin has to authenticate on another domain, you could create a seamless iframe that runs and authenticates on the external domain.
-
-
stackoverflow.com stackoverflow.com
-
I normally try to figure out if that's a good solution for the problem before resorting to iframes. Sometimes, however, an iframe just does the job better. It maintains its own browser history, helps you segregate CSS styles if that's an issue with the content you're loading in.
-
-
stackoverflow.com stackoverflow.com
-
Usually, if you can do it without an iframe, that is a better option. I'm sure others here may have more information or more specific examples, it all comes down to the problem you are trying to solve.

Ubuntu also supports ‘snap’ packages which are more suited for third-party applications and tools which evolve at their own speed, independently of Ubuntu. If you want to install a high-profile app like Skype or a toolchain like the latest version of Golang, you probably want the snap because it will give you fresher versions and more control of the specific major versions you want to track.

Depending on what other component libraries you’ve used, you may be used to handling events by passing callback functions to component properties, or using a special event syntax – Svelte supports both, though one is usually more appropriate than the other depending on your situation. I wouldn't use Flutter for web, mobile is good though.
-
It's super promising for web apps, just maybe not for web pages. I went from React to Svelte to Flutter for my current app project, and every step felt like a major upgrade.Flutter provides the best developer experience bar none, and I think it also has the potential to provide the best user experience. But probably only for PWAs, which users are likely to install anyway. Or other self-contained experiences, like Facebook games. It does have some Flash vibes, but is far more suitable for proper app development than Flash ever was while still feeling more like a normal website to the average user. It won't be the right choice for everything, but I believe it will be for a lot of things.

One of the significant differences between the two is that a call to a partially applied function returns the result right away, not another function down the currying chain; this distinction can be illustrated clearly for functions whose arity is greater than two.

Currying and partial function application are often conflated.

Looks like the problem is that debounce defaults to waiting for 0 ms ... which is completely useless!
It would be (and is) way to easy to omit the 2nd parameter to https://lodash.com/docs/4.17.15#debounce.
Why is that an optional param with a default value?? It should be required!
There must be some application where a delay of 0 is useless. https://www.geeksforgeeks.org/lodash-_-debounce-method/ alludes to / implies there may be a use:
When the wait time is 0 and the leading option is false, then the func call is deferred until to the next tick.
But I don't know what that use case is. For the use case / application of debouncing user input (where each character of input is delayed by at least 10 ms -- probably > 100 ms -- a delay of 0 seems utterly useless.

trusktr herman willems • 2 years ago Haha. Maybe React should focus on a template-string syntax and follow standards (and provide options for pre-compiling in Webpack, etc).
Well anywho, there's other projects now like hyperHTML, lit-html, etc, plus some really fast ones: https://www.stefankrause.ne...
React seems a little old now (and the new Hooks API is also resource heavy).
• Share › Michael Calkins trusktr • 4 years ago • edited That's a micro optimization. There isn't a big enough difference to matter unless you are building a game or something extraordinarily odd.
• Share › − trusktr Michael Calkins • 2 years ago True, it matters if you're re-rendering the template at 60fps (f.e. for animations, or for games). If you're just changing views one time (f.e. a URL route change), then 100ms won't hurt at all.

Most of these companies use some framework which includes an IDL (Interface Definition Language), and a transport (typically RPC/HTTP). A few popular ones are Protocol Buffer (used at Google), Thrift (used at Facebook, Twitter, ...), and Avro (used at LinkedIn). These frameworks allow applications to expose its interface in an IDL file (.proto, .thrift, etc.). Applications communicate to other applications by calling services (exposed at the server side using the IDL) over RPC/HTTP. Services can be written in any language supported by the framework. Similarly, clients too can be written in any language. These frameworks also support versioning that allows compatibility of newer implementation of services with older implementations of the clients and vice-versa. Other sophisticated features include compression, efficient serialization/de-serialization, etc. Some smaller companies use just HTTP REST. For details, please see:1: Protocol Buffers2: Apache Thrift3: Apache Avro

Isomorphism itself is not purely a JavaScript thing. You can also build an isomorphic application in Dart or even use two different languages/stacks to render the same result. In fact there are many “isomorphic” applications which render a full HTML document on the server using PHP, Java or Ruby and use JavaScript and AJAX to create a rich user experience in the browser. This was the way things were done before the rise of Single Page Applications. The only real reason isomorphism is tied to JavaScript is because it’s the only language widely supported in the browser, and so at least part of the whole thing will use JavaScript. There’s no such thing as Isomorphic JavaScript, only isomorphic applications.

Devise-Two-Factor only worries about the backend, leaving the details of the integration up to you. This means that you're responsible for building the UI that drives the gem. While there is an example Rails application included in the gem, it is important to remember that this gem is intentionally very open-ended, and you should build a user experience which fits your individual application.

This paper explores how the Internet of Things and blockchain technology can benefit shared economy applications. The focus of this research is understanding how blockchain can be exploited to create decentralised, shared economy applications that allow people to monetise, securely, their things to create more wealth. Shared economy applications such as Airbnb and Uber are well-known applications, but there are many other opportunities to share in the digital economy. With the recent interest in the Internet of Things and blockchain, the opportunity exists to create a myriad of sharing applications, e.g. peer-to-peer automatic payment mechanisms, foreign exchange platforms, digital rights management and cultural heritage to name but a few
This article sheds light into shared economy, have highlighted just the abstract, but this entire article is so interesting and the application it talks about is great, like how can airbnb or uber use blockchain to protect it's clients privacy. Must read

A technique common in rodents is the use of Cre recombinase lines that are inducible at specific developmental time points (Figure 3b). The most common form of inducible Cre is CreERT2, which contains a modified estrogen receptor binding domain that prevents Cre from entering the nucleus in the absence of a ligand

Efficacy of interventions
It would be really interesting to see what a social network would look in a summer camp, for example, pre- and post- team-building as an intervention.
As a teacher at an expeditionary learning school, I get the feeling that putting my students on expeditions with each other gives them stronger bonds with one another. But - is my intuition correct?
-
Now, you could ask questions such as, how does being on the outside (periphery) or inside (center) of a friendship network correlate with one's grade point average? Or, do birds of a feather flock together? That is, are students with similar grade point averages likely to nominate each other?
What variables are more important in the determination or change of friendship in different stages, grades, gender, interest, or similar economic background or experience? What self-identity cognition would be reflected from it?
