In usingconflict management procedures, teachers should guide children from highlevel mediation, to low level mediation, to child-negotiation. The teachershould also model and teach a consistent conflict management strategyinvolving a 5-step mediation process. A comprehensive approach is necessaryfor children with strong unmet needs. For teachers to use guidanceeffectively, they must build and maintain a personal and professional supportsystem. (KB)ReproductionssuppliedbyEDRSarethebestthatcanbemadefromtheoriginaldocument.
This is one of the ideas I will take to my classroom. I like the idea of having steps as you help the student deescalate the behavior. I think is great that it emphasizes the importance of maintaining and building strong connections.

-

Most companies where I worked have a history of rebuilding their applications every 3 to 5 years, some even 2 years. This has extremely high costs, it has a major impact on how successful the application is, and therefore how successful the company is, besides being extremely frustrating for developers to work with a messy code base, and making them want to leave the company. A serious company, with a long-term vision, cannot afford any of it, not the financial loss, not the time loss, not the reputation loss, not the client loss, not the talent loss.

“[Weimar]… Yes, we all know how it ends. But its participants… could have no idea what was in store for them. Will we be any the wiser? I ask because Weimar now beckons us. But, not at all in the way we think. We think about Weimar only in terms of the weakening of American democracy. While we should really think about it in terms of the world."

Comment - This is a very appropriate quote as it is not just a national threat, but a global one - Steve Bannon and others have been criss-crossing the globe priming other far-right movements - It is also the case that most people are underestimating the slippery slope we are sliding down, - just as the people supporting Hitler at the time of Hitler's ascendency were not aware that he was going to cause a genocide - Would these people have gone along with Hitler if they knew in the early days what we now know?

One of the biggest lessons of the Occupy movement was that you can't only have a demonstration. Demonstrations are great. Demonstrations are important to bring attention to certain critical issues. But if you lack mobilization and organization and a political strategy, then you're just basically engaging in a performative act. You're indulging in a performance. You aren't really changing the course of history.

International cooperation and an approach to ADM and machine learning grounded in human rights.

Advocate for and adopt guidelines that establish accountability and transparency for algorithmic decision making (ADM) in both the public and private sectors.

Reflexivity has been explored on a collective societal level, for example through Ulrich Beck's work on reflexive modernization wherein the unintended consequences of simple modernity motivate a reflexive turn across society, including to science itself: ‘science itself is deconstructed by means of science’

It makes a lot of sense to have this different strategy of being rooted in the real physical world and have digital nomads being as like a guild of knowledge workers that seed their specialized knowledge because localism is necessary and good, but it's also not necessarily very innovative. Most people at the local level just keep repeating stuff. It's good to have people coming in from the outside and innovating.

Conclusion:

supposing I was a writer, say, for a newspaper or for a magazine. I could create content in one language, FreeSpeech, and the person who's consuming that content, the person who's reading that particular information could choose any engine, and they could read it in their own mother tongue, in their native language
for - freespeech can be used as an international language translator - data structure of thought - from TED Talk - YouTube - A word game to convey any language - Ajit Narayanan
-
when you want to use Google, you go into Google search, and you type in English, and it matches the English with the English. What if we could do this in FreeSpeech instead? I have a suspicion that if we did this, we'd find that algorithms like searching, like retrieval, all of these things, are much simpler and also more effective, because they don't process the data structure of speech. Instead they're processing the data structure of thought

for - investigate - question - Does this other app that allows learning another language with the proficiency of a child exist? - from TED Talk - YouTube - A word game to convey any language - Ajit Narayanan
-
there were a group of scientists that were trying to understand how the brain processes language, and they found something very interesting. They found that when you learn a language as a child, as a two-year-old, you learn it with a certain part of your brain, and when you learn a language as an adult -- for example, if I wanted to learn Japanese
for - research study - language - children learning mother tongue use a different post off the brain then adults learning another language - from TED Talk - YouTube - A word game to convey any language - Ajit Narayanan

if I wasn't an English speaker, if I was speaking in some other language, this map would actually hold true in any language. So long as the questions are standardized, the map is actually independent of language. So I call this FreeSpeech
for - app - Free Speech - permutations of pictures that can created meaning without using language - from TED Talk - YouTube - A word game to convey any language - Ajit Narayanan
-
grammar is incredibly powerful, because grammar is this one component of language which takes this finite vocabulary that all of us have and allows us to convey an infinite amount of information, an infinite amount of ideas. It's the way in which you can put things together in order to convey anything you want to

I've encountered several people in the Kagyu and Nyingma traditions who say, "Oh, we, you know 'tukdam,' yeah, people go in 'tukdam,' "but it's like, you know, not that big a deal. It's, we don't care that much." Part of the reason they don't care that much is that the idea that you need to go into this completely, kind of, a state where there's no phenomenal content— that's just a pure clear light mind— actually is something that many of the contemporary practitioners and teachers in those lineages don't agree with.
for - Buddhism - Tibetan - Kagyu and Nyingma schools don't make a big deal out of Tukdam - nondual awareness can emerge with other techniques - key insight - Buddhism - Tibetan - Clear light meditation at time of death - Tukdam - a physiological technique - from Youtube - Between Life and Death: Understanding Tukdam - John D. it's said that you can get there by doing like philosophical analysis, but this is using basically physiological techniques to get to the same place phenomenologically. So that's what "tukdam" is theoretically

There are different forms of energy, five primary forms and five secondary forms of energy, and they flow in channels in the body. And at the time of death, there, there's a certain kind of configuration of those energies that occur and you can actually, you can, in a sense, force those energies— maybe that's not the right term, but some people would agree with that metaphor— you can force those energies to enter into that configuration through various forms of yogic practices.

summary - polycrisis - requires a shift in stories - from little self - to big self - from - Emergence Magazine - interview - An Ethics of Wild Mind - David Hinton - We think of ourselves as this little bubble of obsessions and memories going on in our head detached from everything else - THAT'S THE WOUND! - That sounds and IS FELT as bleak, isn't it? - The scientific story of the cosmos is that there are countless solar systems in our universe, countless suns and planets over vast time scales - Our planet evolved life billions of years ago - Some of those life forms became multicellular animals, like us - Some of them developed eyes, nose, ears, skin and a brain and central nervous system - When we look out into the world, it is the cosmos distilled in us looking out at itself - Hence, we are intertwingled and woven into the fabric of everything - the cosmos in human form experiencing the cosmos itself - When we think about our extinction, it is also the cosmos thinking about extinction - When we feel ANYTHING, that's the cosmos feeling it - And WHEN WE DIE that is the cosmos in this human form dying to itself

the sense we have now began when Paleolithic hunter-gatherers started settling into Neolithic agricultural villages. And then at that point, there was a separate human space—it’s the village and the cultivated fields around it. Hunter-gatherers didn’t have that, they’re just wandering through “the wild,” “wilderness.” Of course, that idea would make no sense to them, because there’s no separation.

He identifies agriculture as the first of three major cultural separation events that led to our modern form of alienation - The development of a human place had humble beginnings but today, these places are "human-made worlds" that are foreign to any other species. - The act of settling down in one fixed space gave us a place we can continually build upon, accrue and most importantly, begin and continue timebinding - After all, a library is a fixed place, it doesn't move. It would be very difficult to maintain were it always moving.

there’s an idea that dealing with climate change is an issue for our institutions. Whereas you can see by clear evidence that our institutions have a track record of completely failing to address climate change at all levels throughout the entire history of the climate discourse.

in the early stages, it will be vital to develop networks which address the fundamental stories of capitalist culture, to transcend these with new stories which open up further possibilities.

Plan for human scale: transcendent social relations cannot ‘scale’ in the way that we have become used to considering a fundamental requirement for ‘success’. Anything that scales the way capitalism does will not move in the desired direction. Life always has appropriate scale.

Transcending a global culture of deep complexity and diversity is not a singular project, but can only be the outcome of an enormous multitude of projects, each individual, specific, appropriate to time, place and desire, at all scales. Diversity and multiplicity of approach are not failings but necessities.

We choose transcendence rather than revolution or reform for a simple reason – where revolutions are about dislodging the current elite through violence, and reforms are about preserving the existing system through adaptation, transcendence is about system transformation.
