Meta's next step in their malicious compliance with GDPR/DMA is making less-tracking (not non, still DOB and location used) ads more annoying than tracking ones. Another round of delaying tactics to clearly spelled out legal reqs: no perceptible diff in service allowed.

The fact that many here are maintainers of Ruby implementations also has a biased effect on new features, as they might represent a burden on them. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, I love the diversity of points of view that this brings! OTOH, it's fair that people that do take time to discuss things here have a bigger influence on the direction that Ruby follows.

The point of GPL licenses is to protect the user of the software, not the developer. If you want "protection" as a developer, use MIT (disclaimer of warranty). GPL "infects" other parts of a system to combat a work-around which was used to violate the software freedom of the user, by firewalling sections of GPL'ed code from the rest of the system. If you don't care about your users' software freedom in the first place, then (L)GPL is the wrong choice.

The song criticizes the tendency to rush into judgment without fully understanding the underlying problems. It also emphasizes the value of research and seeking out the truth from various perspectives.
This is basically critical thinking. Which is also my goal for (optimal) education: To build a society of people who think for themselves, critical thinkers; those who do not take everything for granted. The skeptics.
See also Nassim Nicolas Taleb's advice to focus on what you DON'T know rather than what you DO know.
Related to syntopical reading/learning as well. (and Charlie Munger's advice). You want to build a complete picture with a broad understanding and nuanced before formulating an opinion.
Remove bias from your judgement (especially when it comes to people or civilizations) and instead base it on logic and deep understanding.
This also relates to (national, but even local) media... How do you know that what the media portrays about something or someone is correct? Don't take it for granted, especially if it is important, and do your own research. Validity of source is important; media is often opinionized and can contain a lot of misinformation.
See also Simone Weil's thoughts on media, especially where she says misinformation spread must be stopped. It is a vital need for the soul to be presented with (factual) truth.

Is Syntopical Reading not the same as meta-analytic research? In what ways does it differ? In what ways is it the same?
-
- May 2024
-
docdrop.org docdrop.org
-

These platforms have shortcomings on the practical level, as well. If a user needs a different app for everything they want to do online, we’re looking at a massive increase in app fatigue, the exhaustion that comes when users must download and engage with more platforms to have a semblance of an online presence and community. While the platforms offered by Meta and Alphabet are certainly not without issue, it is hard to deny the convenience of their established existence, which makes it possible to communicate, be entertained, shop, and more all in the same place. By contrast, users of decentralized platforms will need to download a slew of apps for everything they want to do online, because these features will no longer all exist in one place.

Summary
The Drive's YouTube channel was launched in 2012 with funding from YouTube and became very popular, producing many successful car shows. However, YouTube ended its funding in 2014 and the channel struggled to remain profitable. It went through various ownership changes and attempts to stay afloat but was never able to regain its original success. In 2020 The Drive revived its YouTube channel with a new series profiling car enthusiasts and their vehicles, hoping to recapture the spirit of celebrating car culture, as new technologies have made cars less of a cultural force. They aim to explore the diverse ways people connect to cars and each other through their shared passion.
Key Moments
- The Drive's YouTube channel was launched in 2012 with funding from YouTube as part of their original content investment program. It grew a large audience but the funding was shut down in 2013.
- An attempt to launch a subscription model in 2014 faced major backlash from viewers who weren't used to paying for online content. This contributed to the audience drifting away.
- The channel's co-founder Emil Rensing was later arrested for fraud unrelated to The Drive, but his legal issues added instability during a difficult period.
- In 2015-2016 the channel was sold to Time Inc. but they weren't prepared to fully fund video operations, leading most original hosts and crew to leave.
- Under new ownership, budgets kept shrinking and YouTube uploads became sporadic as the focus shifted to the website.
- In 2018, Time Inc. was sold and the new owner wasn't interested in continuing automotive media, nearly leading to The Drive being shut down.
- It was saved by new private investors but efforts to relaunch on YouTube in 2020 were derailed by the pandemic.
- The author argues new cars no longer drive as much culture as enthusiast communities and modifying older vehicles.
- Two new YouTube series are announced focusing on enthusiast profiles and explainer stories of automotive history.
- The relaunch aims to rebuild the legacy of the original channel and celebrate car culture.

Overall, the passage examines different apps that enhance the music experience on iPhone beyond the built-in Apple Music app.

- The best audio quality capture on iPhone is from extracting video recorded in the Camera app.
- Apple has removed features over time that gave artists more control over their music on Apple Music.
- Third-party solutions continue to be developed to address problems not solved by Apple Music itself.

Kagi Universal Summarizer output:
Are.na began as a platform for online research and knowledge sharing, created by Charles Broskoski and John Michael Boling as a replacement for the bookmarking site Delicious. They developed it with friends including Dena Yago and Damon Zucconi, seeing it as a way for people to archive and revisit information over time and gain insights. After a period of uncertainty, Broskoski recommitted to Are.na in 2014 and brought others back on board. Today, Are.na aims to cultivate curiosity and sustained thinking online as an alternative to short-term, addictive social media behaviors by allowing users to freely research and assemble information. Notably, Broskoski views Are.na as a lifelong project focused on promoting life-long education and curiosity.

we believe that that annotation is a really important 00:05:05 uh potential tool and we think it's inevitable we could you know have our product teams develop an annotation layer you know or service um this just seems a such a better way to to go about 00:05:16 doing that um and as i said before to to invest in open at the same time makes a lot of sense so we're thinking about um how do we make the best use of our resources
Docdrop is another tool enabled by Hypothesis (Hypothes.is). Here's I'm annotating a portion of transcript of a YouTube video clip.

The third is the brain of the observer. This is also a strong element in film criticism where the camera is the third eye, the eye of the artificial narrator. The most intelligent film about the third eye spying on the action is `Snake Eyes,' where we last saw Gugino. (You may want to check my comments on that film to see what I mean.)

Universal Summarizer
(Summary generated with Kagi's Universal Summarizer.)
Bandcamp has operated as an online music store for over a decade, providing artists and labels with an easy-to-use platform to sell music directly to fans. While receiving little mainstream attention, Bandcamp has paid out $270 million to artists and maintained a simple, artist-focused design. The platform allows free streaming but encourages direct purchases from artists. Chance the Rapper has been a notable champion of Bandcamp, using it for early mixtapes and helping to bring attention to its role in supporting independent musicians. While other services focus on algorithms and playlists, Bandcamp prioritizes direct artist support through low fees and transparent sales data. It has changed little over the years but provides a niche alternative for direct fan-artist connections without the culture-diluting aspects of other streaming services. Bandcamp's low-key approach has helped it avoid issues faced by competitors while continuing to innovate for artists.

I disagree. What is expressed is an attempt to solve X by making something that should maybe be agnostic of time asynchronous. The problem is related to design: time taints code. You have a choice: either you make the surface area of async code grow and grow or you treat it as impure code and you lift pure synchronous logic in an async context. Without more information on the surrounding algorithm, we don't know if the design decision to make SymbolTable async was the best decision and we can't propose an alternative. This question was handled superficially and carelessly by the community.
superficially and carelessly?

The problem with this pile of questions is that, instead of helping the OP get out of the X Y problem, people stay focussed on Y, mark the question as a duplicate of Y in a matter of minutes and X is never properly addressed.
sticking too much to policy/habit instead of addressing the specific needs of individuals? too much eagerness to close / mark as duplicate?

comment
- True, there is no physical cohesion that binds human beings together into a larger organism, but there is another dimension - informational cohesion.
- This informational cohesion expresses itself in cumulative cultural evolution. Even this very discussion they are having is an example of that
- The social superorganism is therefore composed of an informational body and not a physical one and one can think of its major mentations as collective, consensual ideas such as popular memes, movements, governmental or business actions and policies
- I slept on this and this morning, realized how salient Adam's question was to my own work
- The comments here build and expand upon what I thought yesterday (my original annotations)
- The main connections to my own sense-making work are:
- Within our specific human species, the deep entanglement between self and other (the terminology that our Deep Humanity praxis terms the "individual / collective gestalt")
- The Deep Humanity / SRG claim that the concurrent meaning / meta / poly crisis may be an evolutionary test foreshadowing the next possible Major Evolutionary Transition in Individuality.<br />
- https://jonudell.info/h/facet/?max=100&expanded=true&user=stopresetgo&exactTagSearch=true&any=MET+in+Individuality
- As Adam notes, collective consciousness may be more a metaphorical rather than a literal so a social superorganism, (one reference refers to it as Homni
- may be metaphorical only as this higher order individual lacks the physical signaling system to create a biological coherence that, for instance, an animal body possesses.
- Nevertheless, the informational connections do exist that bind individual humans together and it is not trivial.
- Indeed, this is exactly what has catapulted our species into modernity where our cumulative cultural evolution (CCE) has defined the concurrent successes and failures of our species. Modernity's meaning / meta / polycrisis and progress traps are a direct result of CCE.
- Humanity's intentions and its consequences, both intended and unintended are what has come to shape the entire trajectory of the biosphere. So the impacts of human CCE are not trivial at all. Indeed, a paper has been written proposing that human information systems could be the next Major System Transition (MST) that could lead to another future MET that melds biotic and abiotic
- This circles back to Adam's question and what has just emerged for me is this question:
- Is it possible that we could evolve in some kind of hybrid direction where we are biologically still separate individuals BUT deeply intertwingled informationally through CCE and something like the theoretical Indyweb/Indranet which is an explicit articulation of our theoretical informational connectivity?
- In other words, could "collective consciousness be explicitly defined in terms of an explicit, externalized information system reflecting intertwingled individual/collective learning?
- The Indyweb / Indranet informational laminin protein / connective tissue that informationally binds individuals to others in an explicit, externalized means of connecting the individual informational nodes of the social superorganism, giving it "collective consciousness" (whereas prior to Indyweb / Indranet, this informational laminin/connective tissue was not systematically developed so all informational connection, for example of the existing internet, is incomplete and adhoc)
- The major trajectory paths that global or localized cultural populations take can become an indication of the behavior of collective consciousness.
- Voting, both formal and informal is an expression of consensus leading to consensual behavior and the consensual behavior could be a reflection of Homni's collective consciousness
-
insight
- While socially annotating this video, a few insights occurred after last night's sleep:
- Hypothes.is lacks timebound sequence granularity. Indyweb / Indranet has this feature built in and we need it for social annotation. Why? All the information within this particular annotation cannot be machine sorted into a time series. As the social annotator, I actually have to point out which information came first, second, etc. This entire comment, for instance was written AFTER the original very short annotation. Extra tags were updated to reflect the large comment.
- I gained a new realization of the relationship and intertwingularity of individual / collective learning while writing and reflecting on this social annotation. I think it's because of Adam's question that really revolves around MET of Individuality and the 3 conversant's questioning of the fluid and fuzzy boundary between "self" and "other"
- Namely, within Indyweb / Indranet there are two learning pillars that make up the entirety of external sensemaking:
- the first is social annotation of the work of others
- the second is our own synthesis of what we learned from others (ie. our social annotations)
- It is the integration of these two pillars that is the sum of our sensemaking parts. Social annotations allow us to sample the edge of the sensemaking work of others. After all, when we ingest one specific information source of others, it is only one of possibly many. Social annotations reflect how our whole interacts with their part. However, we may then integrate that peripheral information of the other more deeply into our own sensemaking work, and that's where we must have our own central synthesizing Indyweb / Indranet space to do that work.
- It is this interplay between different poles that constitute CCE and symmathesy, mutual learning.
- adjacency between
- Indyweb / Indranet name space
- Indranet
- automatic vs manual references / citations
- adjacency statement
- Oh man, it's so painful to have to insert all these references and citations when Indranet is designed to do all this! A valuable new meme just emerged to express this:

Meta reported to switch payments for tracking in EU, as a way around GDPR issues w tracking. Based on EUCJ verdict in which it was mentioned as an aside. NOYB says this has been previously allowed at media-sites. Imo it was backward then, because it retains the fiction that advertising is only possible with tracking, which is false.

In this system, users of Meta’s social media platforms have very little say in decisions made by the company. The users of Meta have few actions they can take that influence the company, but what they can do is:
True, even doing simple things like making it easier to choose which data you want to share would be a step in the right direction.

“Functional” is a dirty word in dance music. No one wants to be merely functional, nor find themselves on the receiving end of utilitarianism. You don’t want to be invited to a “function,” either—you want to go to a party. Yet culture has been tacking in the direction of the functional for a while now. Music is composed to study or sleep or chill to. Algorithms anticipate our desires. Any creative act can be made into content, which computers then sell ads in front of. There are brand “activations,” which is just another word for functions. All this matters rather a lot for the state of dance music, which, at its core, is meant to serve a specific purpose. Even its name issues a command: Dance. But the best dance music knows all this and blithely ignores it. Instead, it deftly undercuts function with surprise, or pairs it with emotion in sweet harmony.
This is one of those hilariously overdone "highlights" but oh my god.
I need to make a commitment to either seek out more music criticism or figure out once and for all how to effectively communicate to all the different sorts of people in my life who act absurdly justified in demanding I express my thoughts about music ... well
FUCK OFF.

Instead of richly growing over the years, your blog becomes more difficult to manage, and ultimately less useful.
This has personally been the direct opposite of my experience on Write.as, and I think it's largely to do with the fact that I am constrained to tagging.
However...
If more management options helps anyone else feel more cohesively published, I am down to explore.
I suppose you could extrapolate on that and say... I think adapting to the Musing Studio suite was the best CMS thing that ever happened to me and it's helped tremendously... I feel I know it so well that it's actually hard to think of requests/suggestions lol.
But I think that function for me (and perhaps others who've been drawn here for similar reasons) has been served, past tense. The perspective/skills have been acquired and you should absolutely feel enabled to get complicated.
The only request I've come up with is.. perhaps an absorption of the

First, dictionaries are not arbiters of highly literate writing; they merely document usage. For example, irregardless has an entry in many dictionaries, even though any self-respecting writer will avoid using it—except, perhaps, in dialogue to signal that a speaker uses nonstandard language, because that is exactly how some dictionaries characterize the word. Yes, it has a place in dictionaries; regardless of that fact, its superfluous prefix renders it an improper term.

A Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) is a compact sequence ofcharacters that identifies an abstract or physical resource. Thisspecification defines the generic URI syntax and a process forresolving URI references that might be in relative form, along withguidelines and security considerations for the use of URIs on theInternet. The URI syntax defines a grammar that is a superset of allvalid URIs, allowing an implementation to parse the common componentsof a URI reference without knowing the scheme-specific requirementsof every possible identifier. This specification does not define agenerative grammar for URIs; that task is performed by the individualspecifications of each URI scheme.

Chat GPT Summary
The document provides an in-depth analysis of Telegram and its features. The author highlights several benefits of using Telegram, including its low-quality audio recording capabilities, which may be an advantage in some situations where high-quality audio is not necessary. Additionally, Telegram's live location sharing feature is discussed, and the author believes it could be a powerful tool for communities. The feature enables users to connect with others needing rides and users providing them, free of any fees or service charges.
The document concludes with a discussion of the author's preference for Telegram and its mobile-first optimization. Telegram's software is designed for mobile users, and it is easy to use, robust, and universally simple. The author believes that Telegram's success can be attributed to its thoughtful design decisions and development investment towards mobile-first optimization. Furthermore, the author points out that Telegram has completed a gargantuan amount of projects, including Telegraph, its CMS, its embeddedable comments widgets, and its online theme creation tool. The author notes that Telegram's work is very well-documented across GitHub, and the company has comprehensively iterated, invested in trial and error, and eventually produced tools that remedy the disparate gluttony.

I asked ChatGPT to summarize this piece and it did an apt job, I think:
This article discusses the impact of Bandcamp, an online music distribution and curation platform, on independent artists and the music industry. The author praises Bandcamp's commitment to independent artists and transparency, and contrasts it with the issues faced by other streaming services. The article also explores the relationship between Bandcamp and SoundCloud, and the role of both platforms in the music industry. The author argues that Bandcamp's continued obscurity in mainstream media is due to its magnanimous approach to business, which is problematic and personally infuriating. The article concludes by discussing the future of Bandcamp and its potential to transform the music industry.

As the industry endeavors once again to reconcile the cultural and financial incentives of streaming digital music, one independent platform has wavered little from its 10-year-long mission to bring the business to the unsigned artist with elegance and integrity.

For some scholars, it is critical thatthis new Warburg obsessively kept tabs on antisemitic incidents on the Easternfront, scribbling down aphorisms and thoughts on scraps of paper and storingthem in Zettelkasten that are now searchable.
Apparently Aby Warburg "obsessively kept" notes on antisemitic incidents on the Eastern front in his zettelkasten.
This piece looks at Warburg's Jewish identity as supported or not by the contents of his zettelkasten, thus placing it in the use of zettelkasten or card index as autobiography.
Might one's notes reflect who they were as a means of creating both their identity while alive as well as revealing it once they've passed on? Might the use of historical method provide its own historical method to be taken up on a meta basis after one's death?

That tends to be the biggest cop out excuse for libraries. Just do a major version release. The fact this library lies about the encodingis extremely problematic and causes numerous bugs. Any program currently using this library is already incorrect because of this behavior. Actually exposing the problem makes it easier for people to fix.

Meta-analysis statistical procedures provide a measure of the difference between two groups thatis expressed in quantitative units that are comparable across studies
The units are only "comparable across studies" if there weren't any mishaps (eg, clinical or methodological heterogeneity). If there's clinical heterogeneity, then we're probably comparing apples to oranges (ie, either participants, interventions, or outcomes are different among studies). If there's methodological heterogeneity, then that means there's a difference in study design

Covers - ways to assess heterogeneity - courses of action if substantial heterogeneity is found - methods to examine the influence of effect modifiers (either to explore heterogeneity or because there's good reason to suggest specific features of participants/interventions/study types will influence effects of the intervention. - methods include subgroup analyses & meta-regression

Statistical heterogeneity is the term given to differences in the effects of interventions and comesabout because of clinical and/or methodological differences between studies (ie it is a consequenceof clinical and/or methodological heterogeneity). Although some variation in the effects ofinterventions between studies will always exist, whether this variation is greater than what isexpected by chance alone needs to be determined.
If the statistical heterogeneity is larger that what's expected by chance alone, then what does that imply? That there's either clinical or methodological heterogeneity within the pooled studies.
What's the impact of the presence of clinical heterogeneity? The statistical heterogeneity (variation of effects/results of interventions) becomes greater than what's expected by chance alone
What's happens if methodological heterogeneity is present? The statistical heterogeneity (variation of effects/results of interventions) becomes greater than what's expected by chance alone

Machines understand languages, that are formal and rigid, with unique and unambiguous instructions that are interpreted in precisely one way. Those formal, abstract languages, and programming languages in general, are hard to understand for humans like ourselves. Primarily, they are tailored towards the requirements of the machine. The user is therefore forced to adapt to the complexity of the formal language.

The bookitself participates in the history it recounts: it has a title page, table of contents, footnotes, a bibliography and an index to assist the reader, while the digitalcopy enables the reader to search for individual words and phrases as well asto copy-and-paste without disfiguring a material object.
Some scholars study annotations as part of material culture. Are they leaving out too much by solely studying those physically left in the books about which they were made, or should we instead also be looking at other sources like commonplace books, notebooks, note cards, digital spaces like e-readers that allow annotation, social media where texts are discussed, or even digital marginalia in services like Hypothes.is or Perusall?
Some of these forms of annotation allow a digital version of cut and paste which doesn't cause damage to the original text, which should be thought of as a good thing though it may separate the annotations from the original physical object.

These callbacks are focused on the transactions, instead of specific model actions.
At least I think this is talking about this as limitation/problem.
The limitation/problem being that it's not good/useful for performing after-transaction code only for specific actions.
But the next sentence "This is beneficial..." seems contradictory, so I'm a bit confused/unclear of what the intention is...
Looking at this project more, it doesn't appear to solve the "after-transaction code only for specific actions" problem like I initially thought it did (and like https://github.com/grosser/ar_after_transaction does), so I believe I was mistaken. Still not sure what is meant by "instead of specific model actions". Are they claiming that "before_commit_on_create" for example is a "specific model action"? (hardly!) That seems almost identical to the (not specific enough) callbacks provided natively by Rails. Oh yeah, I guess they do point out that Rails 3 adds this functionality, so this gem is only needed for Rails 2.

First, what do I mean by meta-stable? It’s in reference to an article by Scott H Young - 7 Rules for Staying Productive Long-Term. In it, Scott describes a concept in physics where something is stable but small perturbations can cause it to break, and not able to go back to its starting position after a small push. The example he gives is a pendulum, perfectly balanced at the top; when pushed will not return to its starting point. Contrast this with a pendulum’s other stable point, the bottom. When pushed, it’ll return to that starting point easily.
Something is meta-stable if small perturbations won't cause it to break or be able to go back to its starting point.

I believe this is partly due to a militant position on free software. Some advocates believe so strongly that users should be able to recompile their software that they force them to do so. They break libraries seemingly on purpose just to say, “Recompile! Oh you can’t? That’ll teach you to use binary software!” Of course users don’t want to recompile their software, but what users actually want is usually lost on GNOME developers.

Meta-Cute This element has overlap with both overprojection and quirky. It has to do with things that evoke childlike innocence and simplicity, but are meant for usage by adult-age people. In a sense, it’s a way of puncturing modernist over-seriousness, but in a way that is kind, not (postmodernly) biting. In addition to quirky characters and plot lines, and anthropomorphized characters, meta-cute includes spare/clean/flat design (such as the obsession with the font Helvetica that prevailed during the 2000s, incorporation of child-like instruments (such as the glockenspiel) in indie rock music, children being featured in lead roles in plot-lines not meant for children, adults who show childlike qualities in films e.g., having motivations not based in sexuality, career, or power-seeking, etc.

https://danallosso.substack.com/p/help-me-find-world-history-textbooks
Dan Allosso is curious to look at the history of how history is taught.
The history of teaching history is a fascinating topic and is an interesting way for cultural anthropologists to look at how we look at ourselves as well as to reveal subtle ideas about who we want to become.
This is particularly interesting with respect to teaching cultural identity and its relationship to nationalism.
One could look at the history of Reconstruction after the U.S. Civil War to see how the South continued its cultural split from the North (or in more subtle subsections from Colin Woodard's American Nations thesis) to see how this has played out. This could also be compared to the current culture wars taking place with the rise of nationalism within the American political right and the Southern evangelicals which has come to a fervor with the rise of Donald J. Trump.
Other examples are the major shifts in nationalism after the "long 19th century" which resulted in World War I and World War II and Germany's national identity post WWII.

This tends to be a negative effect - people who come to complain/ask about posts on Stack Overflow on Meta are essentially inviting scrutiny and review of these posts. More often than not, it means a flurry of downvotes, close votes and delete votes on a post.

Gems use a period and packages use a dot
Probably a false distinction, because "packages" is used in a way that it implies a distinction from "gems", when in actuality
