Virtual and Mixed Reality (VMR)
I like this term better. I always mention VR but I try to say Virtual Reality Technology so I can be inclusive of Augmented Reality as a well, but I find "Mixed Reality" more inclusive as non-VR users can understand from the word alone.

partnerships, networking, and revenue generation such as donations, memberships, pay what you want, and crowdfunding
I have thought long about the same issue and beyond. The triple (wiki, Hypothesis, donations) could be a working way to search for OER, form a social group processing them, and optionally support the creators.
I imagine that as follows: a person wants to learn about X. They can head to the wiki site about X and look into its Hypothesis annotations, where relevant OER with their preferred donation method can be linked. Also, study groups interested in the respective resource or topic can list virtual or live meetups there. The date of the meetups could be listed in a format that Hypothesis could search and display on a calendar.
Wiki is integral as it categorizes knowledge, is comprehensive, and strives to address biases. Hypothesis stitches websites together for the benefit of the site owners and the collective wisdom that emerges from the discussions. Donations support the creators so they can dedicate their time to creating high-quality resources.

Formats for Disk Images Another piece of the packaging puzzle is disk image formats. There are many. Each has its own benefits and detriments, but I’m not going to get into those here. Again, this is nowhere near a comprehensive list — just something to help with getting your bearings. I’d like to comment on a couple of the formats that I’ve recently encountered. VDI – VirtualBox’s internal default disk image format is VDI. Nevertheless, this is not what is used by Vagrant boxes. VMDK – One of the most common formats. VMWare’s products use various versions and variations of VMDK disk images. Several versions and variations exist, so it’s very important to understand which one you’re working with and where it can be used.

Open Virtual Appliance (OVA) An OVA is an OVF file packaged together with all of its supporting files (disk images, etc.). You can read about the requirements for a valid OVA package in the OVF specification. Oftentimes people will say “an OVF” and really mean “an OVA.”
-
File Formats for Virtual Machines Open Virtualization Format (OVF) The OVF Specification provides a means of describing the properties of a virtual system. It is XML based and has generous allowances for extensibility (with corresponding tradeoffs in actual portability). Most commonly, an OVF file is used to describe a single virtual machine or virtual appliance. It can contain information about the format of a virtual disk image file as well as a description of the virtual hardware that should be emulated to run the OS or application contained on such a disk image.

Virtual machines (VMs) revolutionized the data center. With the ability to easily spin up a machine and even roll back to a working state, VMs bring a level of ease IT would never have enjoyed. Rolling back your VM is handled by way of snapshots.
File Formats for Virtual Machines Open Virtualization Format (OVF)
The OVF Specification provides a means of describing the properties of a virtual system.
Oracle VM VirtualBox can import and export virtual machines in the following formats:
Open Virtualization Format (OVF). This is the industry-standard format. See Section 1.14.1, “About the OVF Format”. Cloud service formats. Export to and import from cloud services such as Oracle Cloud Infrastructure is supported. See Section 1.15, “Integrating with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure”.
1.14.1. About the OVF Format
OVF is a cross-platform standard supported by many virtualization products which enables the creation of ready-made virtual machines that can then be imported into a hypervisor such as Oracle VM VirtualBox. Oracle VM VirtualBox makes OVF import and export easy to do, using the VirtualBox Manager window or the command-line interface.
https://www.virtualbox.org/manual/UserManual.html#ovf
Using OVF enables packaging of virtual appliances. These are disk images, together with configuration settings that can be distributed easily. This way one can offer complete ready-to-use software packages, including OSes with applications, that need no configuration or installation except for importing into Oracle VM VirtualBox.

In 1996, technology historian Jennifer S. Light compared the talk of “cyberoptimists” about virtual communities to city planners’ earlier optimistic predictions about shopping malls. As the automobile colonized U.S. cities in the 1950s, planners promised that malls would be enclosed public spaces to replace Main Streets. But as Light pointed out, the transition to suburban malls brought new inequities of access and limited the space’s functions to those that served commercial interests.
Nice historical comparison.

Yeah, "virtual attribute" seems like dated terminology to me, so conceptually just a method.
-
I see a 'virtual attribute' as something we're forced to implement when using frameworks, ORMs and the like. Something that lets us inject our code into the path of whatever metaprogramming has been put in place for us. In a simple PORO like this, I don't see how it has meaning; it's just a method. :)
Hmm, good point. Maybe so. Though I think I'm fine with calling it a virtual property here too.

has_sauce is a "virtual attribute", a characteristic of the model that's dependent on the underlying toppings attribute.

It dawns on me that these sort of virtual reality-type images that have been around for ages aren't too dissimilar to how I see the world with various mnemonic techniques. They're also the closes way of potentially helping modern first world Western cultures better understand how many indigenous societies have seen the world in the past.

A JavaScript DOM model supporting element creation, diff computation and patch operations for efficient re-rendering
-
virtual-dom exposes a set of objects designed for representing DOM nodes. A "Document Object Model Model" might seem like a strange term, but it is exactly that. It's a native JavaScript tree structure that represents a native DOM node tree.
-
virtual-dom is a collection of modules designed to provide a declarative way of representing the DOM for your app. So instead of updating the DOM when your application state changes, you simply create a virtual tree or VTree, which looks like the DOM state that you want. virtual-dom will then figure out how to make the DOM look like this efficiently without recreating all of the DOM nodes.

The Shadow DOM is a browser technology designed primarily for scoping variables and CSS in web components. The virtual DOM is a concept implemented by libraries in JavaScript on top of browser APIs.
-
Since “virtual DOM” is more of a pattern than a specific technology, people sometimes say it to mean different things. In React world, the term “virtual DOM” is usually associated with React elements since they are the objects representing the user interface
-
The virtual DOM (VDOM) is a programming concept where an ideal, or “virtual”, representation of a UI is kept in memory and synced with the “real” DOM by a library such as ReactDOM.

Strategies for Virtual Learning Environments:Focusing on Teaching Presence and TeachingImmediacy
Through a literature review of 50 articles published between 2003-2014, the authors explored aspects of online learning (teacher presence, teacher immediacy) that impact learner interest and motivation in the online environment. Recognizing that these aspects are key, the authors explore various approaches to retention the virtual setting. The multifaceted role of the instructor is reviewed as well as virtual facilitation strategies. The literature search revealed a positive correlation between teaching presence, teaching immediacy, and learner engagement and motivation. 6/10

React creates a virtual DOM. When state changes in a component it firstly runs a “diffing” algorithm, which identifies what has changed in the virtual DOM. The second step is reconciliation, where it updates the DOM with the results of diff. The HTML DOM is always tree-structured — which is allowed by the structure of HTML document. The DOM trees are huge nowadays because of large apps. Since we are more and more pushed towards dynamic web apps (Single Page Applications — SPAs), we need to modify the DOM tree incessantly and a lot. And this is a real performance and development pain. The Virtual DOM is an abstraction of the HTML DOM. It is lightweight and detached from the browser-specific implementation details. It is not invented by React but it uses it and provides it for free. ReactElements lives in the virtual DOM. They make the basic nodes here. Once we defined the elements, ReactElements can be render into the "real" DOM.Whenever a ReactComponent is changing the state, diff algorithm in React runs and identifies what has changed. And then it updates the DOM with the results of diff. The point is - it’s done faster than it would be in the regular DOM.
React creates a virtual DOM and every time the state of a component changes, it runs a diff algorithm on the virtual DOM. If something needs to be changed, it changes only this part in the HTML DOM. This is faster than the default of updating the entire HTML DOM any time something changes.

When in need of help, students reread directions, checkwith Home-Group members (3-4 students who are inschool or at home on the same days), check the digitalPeer Expert Board, and then put their name on the digitalHelp Board
This is a fantastic idea for building community.
Facilitate in Google? Allow edits on a Canvas page? What about multiple editors?
- Google Slides parking lot embedded on the homepage
- Each student has a slide they edit
- General questions slide for help requests

review teacher notes and the schedule theydesigned for themselves for the week,
Students are dictating the pace and the content they're working on. The teacher is helping to curate and interpret those materials as students work through the idea.
-
Curate an instructional plan forstudents, whether at home orschool, that will addresscognitive, learning style, andcultural differences.
I don't remember where it was, but someone suggested a 5:1 prep:teach time ratio. Spend far more time prepping (researching, finding resources, etc) than you do actually teaching students verbally so you have several items to incorporate or fall back on.
-
BenchmarkDiscussion
What is a Benchmark Discussion? Why is it capitalized?
-
Students continue working ondifferentiated learning activities.(Remote only? Hold discussionswith half of the class at a time.)
Sounds like great use of a fishbowl model.
-
socially-distanced in-school students andat-home students can join
Use the tools that are available to make the in-person material as accessible as possible to the at home students.
- iPad as a document camera
- AirServer to the board, share screen to Meet
Repeat the sessions on A/B days? One day per week for these sessions?
-
Students access an Activity List
Weekly planning is critical. This helps the teacher provide consistent, supportive instruction and it helps the student regulate their work.
Having minimesters this term will help students focus.
-
indicate they arepresent
What are some simple ways to indicate they're present?
- Google Form with email automatically collected?
- Canvas survey with a simple get to know you question?
Something independent that can build self-regulation skills and habits.
-
I recommend a cloud-baseddocument where students can post their thoughts or comments (in-school and at-home students) so thatthe teacher can follow the discussion
Backchanneling - or doing something like a remote fishbowl discussion - can help facilitate the physical gap for students at home vs in class.
- How can we explore bringing in home/school students at the same time? Try with the ambassadors?
-
Time with the teacher “live” shifts to these Small-Group, Mini-Lessons and live discussions whereteachers can engage students in collectively grappling with content.
Time is spent talking with one another, not a teacher talking at a group of students.
Separate yourself out of time constraints by providing familiar instruction materials (ie, video) ahead of the small group meeting so the group time is as effective and focused as possible.
-
Whole-class lessons across video, sometimes called “live streaming,” are not effective -- I won’teven sugar-coat that
There are too many unknown factors involved in expecting every student, in vastly different home situations, to engage equally in a given situation.
-
Teachers need to avoid reserving in-school days for lessons andteacher talk, thus, robbing students of the socialization skills they are craving
When you're together, it's time to listen to what students are saying rather than talking at them even more.

-
We cannot afford to depend on in-school time for lessons and at-home time only forpractice.
This is a remnant of the old model of schooling which needs to be foregone in favor of better models, more suited to flexible learning environments.
-
The key to a successful hybrid learning environment is implementing structures and strategiesthat work as well at home as they do in school, such that learning continues whether at home orat school -- no need for a change in methods with a change in setting
These should be based on skills students already have or which can be developed independently (or with limited, in person support).

Then there is the option of getting students to talk to each other online on discussion boards and videoconferences. Some students adapt to it quickly and like it. Some don’t, because it feels impersonal. You have to be patient with that and give them some time and space to adjust.
Introverts v extroverts. Oil and water. They've always differed, always will. Maybe this virtual, personalized learning movement will finally allow introverts to stop feeling so defeated in the presence of extroverts who live so much more loudly than they do. Finally, they'll be able to live peacefully in their own mind, undisturbed by the stress of feelings like you need to be more extroverted to fit in.
Btw: I'm not encouraging each party to distance themselves from each other all the time. What I am saying is that when value is trying to be distributed, distribute it however it'll best be received. Then, later, once teaching time is over, they can socialize in traditional ways... IF that's what they want to do.
-
Rizga: How have you been translating this online?Moore: It depends on the student. Some students work very well asynchronously. They are very comfortable working alone on a draft; I make color-coded comments in a word document or their PDF, and then I send it back. Some students need me to explain things to them in person before I send them the comments; we’ll do a video or audio chat. Others need even more interaction: I’ll hook them up to a videoconference, and we’ll go through all the comments together. Some students I need to refer to a grammar-brushup program or a YouTube video on how to do some of the mechanical stuff like uploading papers online.
Sounds like Mrs. Moore deserves a raise! This woman knows what's up! She represents the future while living in a community that (probably) latches on to tradition.
Any of you big city school systems reading this? If you are, hire her. You can probably pay her less than what your other teachers are earning and still give her a bump in pay compared to what she's earning in Mississippi.

Playing games with my brother taught me that connections can be made with another person through virtual reality. Things like cooperation, shared problem-solving, and communication in gaming can strengthen relationships. Most importantly, gaming taught me that no matter the differences between me and another person, we can find common ground through play.

Virtual reality meets this bar when it comes to one-on-one conversations: when we analyzed the EEG results of participants who chatted in virtual reality, we found that on average they were within the optimal range of cognitive effort. To put it another way, participants in virtual reality were neither bored nor overstimulated. They were also in the ideal zone for remembering and processing information.

Towards a Mobile Augmented Reality Prototype for Corporate Training: A New Perspective
Research Article. I found this article especially interesting because it promotes the use of mobile devices for online learning. This focuses on corporate training, but it is easy to see how it could be applied across areas and fields. There is a specific focus on the use of virtual and real objects during education experiences to create experience-based learning outcomes. Rating 4/10
