summary - That digital decay and link rot are digital facts of life means that annotating information on the page that is relevant for you to preserve is a good practice. - It may appear redundant but if that page disappears in the future, you will be glad you have preserved it in a place accessible to you - in your annotations!
-
The study looked at over 550,000 articles, which contained over 2.2 million links to external websites. It found that 72 percent of those links were “deep,” or pointing to a specific page rather than a general website. Predictably, it found that, as time went on, links were more likely to be dead: 6 percent of links in 2018 articles were inaccessible, while a whopping 72 percent of links from 1998 were dead.

Sure, you can bitch with other students in the same class, and maybe perform the occasional group study session, but in the end, it’s you alone battling the mysterious forces of your professor and his capricious whims.
Hmm. That's not entirely true. Studying in a group helps a lot in clarifying concepts when the students teach each-other. Simply co-working doesn't produce much effect except increasing accountability.

Raw facts are useless for college-level essay questions.
How does this fare with Indian Education System in High School? The mainstream boards like CBSE and ICSE emphasise rote learning instead.
But even if you have to memorise raw facts, note-taking is prolly not the best way to go.
-
If you ask a straight-A undergraduate, however, (which, in my infinite oddness, I have done many times), he would instead answer: to reduce my study time.
This cannot be done with a linear/passive note-taking system

The act of constructing an Anki card is itself nearly always a form of elaborative encoding
The same happens when you make atomic notes in Roam or Obsidian, where you can link things. Non-linear note-taking
-
The world isn't divided up into neatly separated components, and I believe it's good to collide very different types of questions. One moment Anki is asking me a question about the temperature chicken should be cooked to. The next: a question about the JavaScript API. Is this mixing doing me any real good? I'm not sure.
I think context-switching helps a lot as it makes it more challenging to retrieve, thus making stronger neural connections
-
Of course, instead of using Anki I could have taken conventional notes, using a similar process to build up an understanding of the paper. But using Anki gave me confidence I would retain much of the understanding over the long term.
Short term memory vs Long-term memory
One easy example that comes to my mind is studying for exams vs studying for changing worldview

-
The purpose of this study is to build on this ongoing research trajectory and help provide the sort of empirical evidence on the relative efficacy of narratives versus nonnarratives required to propel narratives into mainstream health campaigns and messaging.
-
must first address scientifically the question of whether narratives are, “indeed more effective than nonnarrative communication for overcoming resistance, facilitating information processing, providing social connections, and representing emotional and existential issues”
-
This research investigates the relative efficacy of changing health-related knowledge, attitudes, and behavioral intentions using a fictional narrative compared to a more traditional nonfictional nonnarrative format.

"There is a large literature relating to twins in their purely surgical and physiological aspect. The reader interested in this should consult Die Lehre von den Zwillingen, von L. Kleinwächter, Prag. 1871. It is full of references, but it is also unhappily disfigured by a number of numerical misprints, especially in page 26.

WORLD Italian cheesemakers microchip parmesan in bid to fight copycats BY EMMET LYONS
AUGUST 18, 2023 / 11:45 AM / CBS NEWS
One of the world's most famous cheeses is also one of the most counterfeited dairy products on the planet.
Competing manufacturers have for years produced cheaper imitations of Italy's parmigiano reggiano, a favored topping for pasta and salad.
FILE PHOTO: A storage area for Parmesan cheese wheels is pictured at storehouse shelf at 4 Madonne Caseificio dell'Emilia dairy cooperative in Modena A storage area for Parmesan cheese wheels is pictured at storehouse shelf at 4 Madonne Caseificio dell'Emilia dairy cooperative in Modena, Italy, February 16 2016. ALESSANDRO BIANCHI / REUTERS Now, the producers of parmigiano reggiano say they have innovated a way to prevent any pretenders from ripping off their product.
Parmigiano Reggiano Consortium (PRC), the association that oversees production of the cheese, says it has been putting microchips in its product as part of a technological trial which would allow consumers to trace parmesan cheese back to its place of origin.
Under special protections designated by the European Union, parmigiano reggiano is the only kind of cheese which can be called parmesan within Europe and it must be made in a small part of northern Italy, including in the provinces of Parma and Reggio Emilia.
PRC are hopeful that their new technology will help to enforce that protected status. Their microchips are about the size of a grain of salt and have been inserted into the labels found on the rind of about 120,000 wheels of parmigiano reggiano. The chips work as scannable food tags with a QR code label (link)

- Abstract
- Climate change research on major aquatic species assists various stakeholders (e.g. policymakers, farmers, funders) in better managing its aquaculture activities and productivity for future food sustainability.
- However, there has been little research on the impact of climate change on aquatic production, particularly in terms of scientometric analyses.
- Thus, using the
- bibliometric and
- scientometric analysis methods,
- this study was carried out to determine what research exists on the impact of climate change on aquatic production groups.
- We focused on
- finfish,
- crustaceans, and
- molluscs.
- Data retrieved from Web of Science was
- mapped with CiteSpace and
- used to assess
- the trends and
- current status of research topics
- on climate change associated with worldwide aquatic production.
- We identified ocean acidification as an important research topic for managing the future production of aquatic species.
- We also provided a comprehensive perspective and delineated the need for:
- i) more international collaboration for research activity focusing on climate change and aquatic production in order to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal by 2030;
- ii) the incorporation of work from molecular biology, economics, and sustainability.

- Abstract
- The number of publications in biomedicine and life sciences
- has rapidly grown over the last decades,
- with over 1.5 million papers now published every year.
- This makes it difficult to
- keep track of new scientific works and
- to have an overview of the evolution of the field as a whole.
- Here we
- present a 2D atlas of the entire corpus of biomedical literature, and
- argue that it provides
- a unique and
- useful overview
- of the life sciences research.
- We base our atlas on the abstract texts of
- 21 million English articles from the PubMed database.
- To embed the abstracts into 2D, we use
- a large language model PubMedBERT, combined with
- t-SNE tailored to handle samples of our size.
- We use our atlas to study
- the emergence of the Covid-19 literature,
- the evolution of the neuroscience discipline,
- the uptake of machine learning, and
- the distribution of gender imbalance in academic authorship.
- Furthermore, we present an interactive web version of our atlas that
- allows easy exploration and
- will enable further insights and facilitate future research.

Unlike many developed countries, the United States lacks a national curriculum or teacher-training standards. Local policies change constantly, as governors, school boards, mayors and superintendents flow in and out of jobs.
Many developed countries have national curricula and specific teacher-training standards, but the United States does not. Instead decisions on curricular and standards are created and enforced at the state and local levels, often by politically elected figures including governors, mayors, superintendents, and school boards.
This leaves early education in the United States open to a much greater sway of political influence. This can be seen in examples of Texas attempting to legislate the display the ten commandments in school classrooms in 2023, reading science being neglected in the adoption of Culkins' Units of Study curriculum, and other footballs like the supposed suppression of critical race theory in right leaning states.
-
Her curriculum, “Units of Study,” is built on a vision of children as natural readers, and it has been wildly popular and profitable. She estimates that a quarter of the country’s 67,000 elementary schools use it. At Columbia University’s Teachers College, she and her team have trained hundreds of thousands of educators.
Calkins' Units of Study curriculum has been estimated to be used by nearly 25% of the 67,000 elementary schools in the United States in 2023.

Good teachers need to have the context of the student to know what level of explanation they need to give to satisfy the curiosity of the learner. (Also a potential reason that online programmatic learning is difficult as having the appropriate context to skip portions is incredibly hard to do with computers.)
General rule of thumb: The levels of the depth of explanations provided are generally proportional to the levels of understanding achieved.
Further understanding requires additional questions, research, and work.
