Awesome! I will look into Oxford and the New York Review of Books lines. I have a couple Norton Critical books from school, (one of which is Heart of Darkness, as a matter of fact) and they are crazy good if you are looking for a wide slice of criticism and analysis (thus the critical edition moniker, I guess). For me though, it's really too much for a book you just want to read. I like informative introductions and frequent notes on the personal or literary context (these were great for Monte Cristo), but any more than that begins to weigh things down.
Some publishers can be too much for certain works (depending on the goal for reading)

In his 1926 work, The Meaning of a Liberal Education, heargued that education’s task is to “reorient the individual, to enablehim to take a richer and more significant view of his experiences, toplace him above and not within the system of his beliefs and ideals.”
Is it possible to be above one's own system of beliefs and ideas? Doesn't the system make them a product of it? Evolving from a base at best?
The idea sounds lovely, but is it possible anthropologically?
-
As Leon Fink wrote of that period,“education ranked . . . high on the agenda” of Progressive intellectu-als and reformers. Considering the logic of reformers he added: “Ifthe people were to seize their democratic birthright for the greatergood . . . they must engage their higher faculties of reason” and be“schooled in sense of civic duty.” This would make them a “demo-cratic public.”8
Check Fink to see where the seeds of this idea of linking education and democracy sprouted...

, one of the reasons that the New York Public Library had toclose its public catalog was that the public was destroying it. TheHetty Green cards disappeared. This myth is mostly the blame of the novelist Washington Irving
-
for: Washington Irving, book - the History of New York, book - A History of the Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus
-
comment
- Irving was a American writer who wrote fiction for the intent of stoking nationalism. He bent the truth in many ways.
- Among his most famous and impactful historical lies that Irving fabricated in his book on Columbus was that prior to Columbus, the majority of educated people thought the earth was flat. In fact, most educated people believed the earth to be round during the time of Columbus.
-
interesting fact: knickerbocker
- The term knickerbocker originated in the pseudonym Diedrich Knickerbocker that Irving chose for his book "A History of New York"

Allein um Houston in Texas herum wurde in den letzten Jahrzehnten eine Fläche, die dem Land Belgien entspricht, versiegelt. Die verkehrsemissionen sind der größte Teil des enormen amerikanischen treibhausgasausstoßes. Here it is probably necessary to explain that lots of things were once typed — on machines called typewriters — during a period of human history after stone tablets and before laptops and cellphones. It is probably also necessary to explain that reference to a card catalog in the first paragraph. A card catalog was an inventory of what was in a library before all the holdings were listed, and maybe available, online.
A bit tongue-in-cheek, the New York Times describes for the technically inadept what a typewriter and a card catalog are.

d. She puts the ideas together and tries to broker a deal for theconglomerate to acquire a radio network. At the end, she’s challenged to describehow she came up with the plan for the acquisition. It’s a telling scene. She has justbeen fired. On her way out of the building, with all her files and personal itemspacked in a box (a box just like mine!), she gets a chance to explain her thoughtprocess to the mogul:See? This is Forbes. It’s just your basic article about how you were lookingto expand into broadcasting. Right? Okay now. The same day—I’ll never forgetthis—I’m reading Page Six of the New York Post and there’s this item on BobbyStein, the radio talk show guy who does all those gross jokes about Ethiopiaand the Betty Ford Center. Well, anyway, he’s hosting this charity auction thatnight. Real bluebloods and won’t that be funny? Now I turn the page to Suzywho does the society stuff and there’s this picture of your daughter—see, nicepicture—and she’s helping to organize the charity ball. So I started to think:Trask, Radio, Trask, Radio.... So now here we are. He’s impressed and hires her on the spot. Forget the fairy-tale plot; as ademonstration of how to link A to B and come up with C, Working Girl is a primerin the art of scratching.
The plot twist at the end of Working Girl (Twentieth Century Fox, 1988) turns on Tess McGill (Melanie Griffith) explaining her stroke of combinatorial creativity in coming up with a business pitch. Because she had juxtaposed several disparate ideas from the New York Post several pages from each other in a creative way, she got the job and Katharine Parker (Sigourney Weaver) is left embarrassed because she can't explain how she came up with a complicated combination of ideas.
Is this Tess McGill's zettelkasten in the movie Working Girl?
Tess McGill has slips of newspaper with ideas on them and a physical box to put them in.
slips with ideas+box=zettelkasten
Bonus points because she links her ideas, right?!

a report identifying the climate strategies and technologies that will result in the most air and water quality improvements
One would expect such a report to say much about reducing emissions from electricity generation, however, in many states, particularly those in the Northeast and North, electricity generation and use only produces a small portion of GHG emissions. In New York State, electricity generation is responsible for less than 20% of emissions while heating and transportation each produce between 35% and 40% of emissions. Thus, in New York, emissions from electricity are a third-level priority. In New York, a focus on adoption of heat pumps and electric vehicles will contribute more to cleaning our air and water than a focus on electricity.
It is important that this report identify strategies and technologies which are appropriate for the various regions of the country.

Collocates are an especially fruitful realm of exploration. Returning to our Toronto plaque example, if we look for the colocates of ‘York’ we see several interesting results: “Fort” (referring to the military installation Fort York), “Infantry,” “Mills” (the area of York Mills), “radial” (referring to the York Radial Railway), and even slang such as “Muddy” (“Muddy York” being a Toronto nickname). With several documents, one could trace how collocates change over time: perhaps early documents refer to Fort York and subsequently we see more collocates referring to North York? Finally, AntConc also provides options for overall word and phrase frequency, as well as specific n-gram searching.

In a new article, the New York Times details a little-known technique increasingly used by law enforcement to figure out everyone who might have been within certain geographic areas during specific time periods in the past. The technique relies on detailed location data collected by Google from most Android devices as well as iPhones and iPads that have Google Maps and other apps installed. This data resides in a Google-maintained database called “Sensorvault,” and because Google stores this data indefinitely, Sensorvault “includes detailed location records involving at least hundreds of millions of devices worldwide and dating back nearly a decade.”
Google is passing on location data to law enforcement without letting users know.

By positively engaging their peers, such teachers enact a larger circle ofsupport for achieving the moral purpose of advancing the learning and development ofchildren in their journey to adulthood
The network effect.
-
Such principals communicated with all teachers intheir schools about expectations of instructional improvement, the roles of teacher-leaders asa resource for improvement, and expectations of teachers interacting in positive ways with theteacher-leaders
Not dictating the time or role of the leader in the building, but empowering their staff to take advantage of that individual's time and expertise.
This is particularly important for younger or leaders with less in-class experience than other staff.
-
principals must intentionally develop trusting relationships with teacher-leaders
Seeing the evaluative leader of the building have a positive relationship with a teacher leader lends value and trust by extension.
-
Here are some questions to frame initial conversations between teacher-leaders andthose who support their work
Clarity in expectations are critical for successful implementation. See Bae et. al.
-
Some of the content areas identified assupporting teacher-leaders in their work include: advanced curricular, instructional, andassessment practices; school culture and its implications for professional and organizationalimprovement; adult development; and facilitation, presentation, and coaching skills requiredto facilitate learning and collaboration for individuals as well as with small or large groups
Without expanded skills, you cannot meet needs of teachers.
It's interesting that teaching practices in the classroom are observable manifestations of these expanded beliefs/abilities.
-
Further, working in authentic instructional situations allows teachers who lead to continuedeveloping their own instructional skills and, by doing so, to remain credible as teachers.
Working in context supports the teacer's learning (Taylor 06) as well as builds credibility for a coach. What kind of coach is never around?
-
learning by experimenting with newpractices and then observing positive results is the means by which beliefs are changed.
Coaching is critical in this area. Support in the process of change provides a safety net in case those new ideas don't go well. Providing an ear for reflection and adjustment helps prevent giving up.
-
meaning that one does not always knowwhat to do
Saying, "I don't know, but I'll follow up," and then actually following up, really builds trust at the start of the relationship.
-
Teachers who influence othershave the capability to establish high trust relationships with and among their teaching peersand principals
Teacher leaders don't have to be popular, but they have to be willing to be genuine and reach out - initiate those conversations with people you don't know.
-
This results inless time for side-by-side work with other teachers, which raises questions about the notionthat teacher leadership is first and foremost about the learning work for instructionalimprovement.
Definitely my biggest struggle. Fighting to get things finished so I can delegate the majority of time to the classroom in the fall.
-
The great potential of leading from the middle comes from remaining connected with teachersand to ground-level practices, while at the same time developing more substantialconnections with school administration and district leaders.
This is a definite benefit as we've grown closer with admins, asking them to become stronger instructional leaders to support district goals.
-
Often, work unseen is work devalued
This only shows up (in education) if you're not a teacher. Prep time, for teachers, is unseen but we all know it's there. Establishing the same level of trust across teaching/coaching is important.
-
engagement of teachers (likestudents) requires “consistent positive reinforcers that are meaningful, relevant, rewarding andenjoyable”
Learning is hard work! Given the scale of change, affirm effort, praise growth, support failure.
-
solation, egalitarianism, irrelevant andepisodic staff development, and disempowerment continue as norms in many schools
The sum of the parts coalesce to push against the change in the whole (culture).
-
Further, because specific development effortsrarely have been sustained over time, full implementation of new initiatives has rarelyoccurred.
If it doesn't work in year one, why go into year two?
Most change takes place over a number of years (3+ in many cases).
-
Egalitarian normsexert invisible pressure on teachers to retain equal status and not strive to be above theirteaching colleagues.
Little things like badging initiatives can foster a community mindset for growth and celebration, but it can also alienate those who don't feel like they can engage for any number of reasons. How does culture influence those gaps and responses?
-
most schools continue to struggle both forstructural and psychological reasons to establish such cultures
What is preventing them from seeing even the value of having time to talk together?
-
Not only does isolation diminish professional growth, but prolongedisolation reinforces a solitary orientation to one's work and often breeds defensiveness andfinger pointing.
It takes effort to build professional relationships. Being relegated into individual classrooms doesn't foster that relationship.
-
put a good person in a bad system and thesystem will win every time.” This emphasizes the powerful effect of existing norms, explicit orimplicit, on human behavior.
Institutional inertia is a real thing.
-
"Teacher leadership is the process by which teachers, individually or collectively, influencetheir colleagues, principals, and other members of school communities to improve teachingand learning practices with the aim of increased student learning and achievement
York-Barr definition.
-
Organizations, likepeople, that continue to learn are better situated not only to adapt but also to thrive in thecontext of an ever-changing external environment
Capacity for growth and change is found in the strength of the organization, not individual members.
-
teachers are key school leaders becausethey are positioned to influence peers through collégial relationships.
How can misconceptions about these new leadership roles erode relationship rather than encourage? How does the relationship change?
-
Leadership is increasingly understood as a phenomenon shared by manyindividuals within organizations
see Taylor 2006
-
In the unfolding third wave of teacher leadership, teachers are leaders in creating andsustaining a collaborative culture of learning in the school focused on improving instructionalpractice
Dedicated roles to systemic improvement.
-
A second wave of teacher leadership “... acknowledged the importance of teachers asinstructional leaders and created positions that capitalized on teacher instructionalknowledge”
Teachers have a different expertise and skill set than admins, we need to incorporate that perspective.
-
The essence of teacher leadership in the first wave wasteachers assuming formal positions, such as department chair, site committee member, orunion representative, positions largely focused on increasing the efficiency of schoolmanagement
Initial responsibilities model traditional leadership roles.

South Bellmore Veterinary Group Review - Things to keep in mind in gifting pets
You only have a few more days left until Christmas and you’re probably thinking of gifting a pet to a loved one. Many people love to keep a pet and if the person receiving the gift is an animal lover then his happiness is guaranteed in giving him a good animal. The pet will serve as his partner in doing things that the person likes like playing at the backyard, doing some physical activities, resting at the park, and many more things the both of them can share together.
Whatever your reasons are in gifting a pet to a person where it can be for Christmas or for a birthday celebration, South Bellmore Veterinary Group still wanted you to consider a few important things regarding the subject matter first before choosing a good pet at the adoption center.
Learn about the preferences of the person getting the pet beforehand. Determine his likes or dislikes in taking care of a pet, and get a list of animals he’s excited to have one day. With that kind of information, you’ll have a clear understanding to which pet suits the person the most.
In relation to the above paragraph, you need to find a pet that would fit the personality of the person especially his lifestyle. If he’s committed to physical training or exercises, then get him a dog that does routine exercise as well. Or if the person prefers to stay at home and just relax most of his days, then get an animal that also does the same. Do a bit of research to ensure the good relationship between the person and the animal in the near future. You can visit or contact an adoption counselor for more expert advice on gifting a pet to a person.
You can also go with giving the person a certificate instead of a present box with a pet inside. A lot of people like it better this way because the person can choose personally at the adoption center for the particular animal he loves to have at his home with a certificate in hand, which covers the adoption fee.
Think about the future possibilities as well, thus go to an adoption center that can still accept the pet when the owner can’t take care of it anymore since this could become a reality in the future. You won’t know for certain the future of the person you’re giving the pet into and the animal, so South Bellmore Veterinary Group wanted you to make sure that the pet still have a place to go home to once it is left by its current owner due to unexpected circumstances, and will receive professional care until the day a new person will fulfill his role as its pet owner.
If ever the person knows that you’ll be giving him a pet as a token of your love or friendship, then it’s better to take him to the animal adoption center and let him choose the animal that he’s very comfortable with and promises to take care throughout its life. Make sure that the person is also ready to face the responsibilities of being a pet owner where he will do his best to provide its needs.
As a group that takes care of pets of any kinds and breeds with utmost love and care, South Bellmore Veterinary Group would like each and every pet owner reading this to show your love to your pet often because this is also the key for it to live a very long life.

Haberman is in Trump’s head so deep she could be his psychiatrist, and she has had extraordinary access to the president and the administration. She is a regular commentator on TV about life “inside the castle.”
This is absolutely incredible and profound. As an old school wannabee journalist, I applaud these efforts. If only the Charlotte Observer would lower their prices to about $5 a month for digital, I would subscribe, even on my income.

Cuomo agreed to help keep the plants running with the aid of a multi-billion dollar bailout to be financed by monthly surcharges on the bills of ratepayers.
I find this confusing. If the plants are running at a deficit can't the price be raised? If the "bailout" is financed by surcharges isn't that effectively the same as an increased energy cost for consumers except that there's now the government as an additional intermediary of that transfer of funds? The only thing I can imagine is that maybe energy costs are regulated?

York boat
York Boats are long, canoe-like, inland boats utilized in the 19th century for fur trading. The boats received their name because they were produced at the York Factory and travelled to inland fur trading posts and back to the York Factory (HBC). Contractors for the Hudson’s Bay Company built the York boats because the birch trees needed to build canoes were not prevalent in York (Morton). Because the Hudson’s Bay Company was already in competition with the North West Company to be the biggest trading company, they attempted to build a new type of boat. York boats soon surpassed canoes in the fur trading business because they could carry more goods. The boats were “clinker-built”, meaning that the heavy wood panels overlapped on the sides to make the boats strong (HBC). The boats were long with flat bottoms and the stern of the boat was angled upward at 45 degrees so that it was easy for the boats to be transferred into and out of water. Each boat fit 8 men, where 6 men paddled the boat down the river and two additional men steered the boat (Morton). Along with their ability to carry more goods, York boats were able to withstand harsh winters and could contact ice patches without destruction (HBC). York boats were no longer produced for trade after the 1870s, but are still used today for an annual heritage festival in Norway House, Manitoba. In 2014, the Civil Rights Project at the University of California, Los Angeles, released a report showing that New York City public schools are among the most segregated in the country.
Here's a relevant quote from this study: "Schools with mostly zoned students generally reflect neighborhood segregation patterns. Those with the means to attend less disadvantaged schools are also often the more advantaged students or families, which increases the segregation within CSDs and the city." There is so much that would be possible to study around these issues. What a rich multi-disciplinary (history, law, politics, statistics, English) project this could be! Here's another interesting source that is distracting me from Hannah-Jones's essay: http://editorial-ny.dnainfo.com/interactives/2014/12/diversity/diversity-frame.html Try this: go to any neighborhood, and start with All Schools, then go to Middle Schools, then High Schools. Notice the green dots (schools with Whites) disappearing? Of course in Bedford-Stuyvesant, where Hannah-Jones lives, this stays the same across the different ages -- only Black-dominant schools are available.
-
I didn’t know any of our middle-class neighbors, black or white, who sent their children to one of these schools. They had managed to secure seats in the more diverse and economically advantaged magnet schools or gifted-and-talented programs outside our area, or opted to pay hefty tuition to progressive but largely white private institutions
This makes me want to take the time to figure out the argument that I heard explained on the Brian Lehrer Show about six months ago http://www.wnyc.org/story/neighborhoods-are-integrated-while-schools-stay-segregated/ Here's the study they are talking about http://www.centernyc.org/segregatedschools and the basic thesis is that even while neighborhoods are integrated (or -- as this author says about Bedford-Stuyvesant "rapidly gentrifying"), schools remain segregrated. I'm assuming that it's because middle class (and White?) parents who might be moving into segregated neighborhoods are still not sending their children to schools in those neighborhoods.
-
the schools are a disturbing reflection of New York City’s stark racial and socioeconomic divisions. In one of the most diverse cities in the world, the children who attend these schools learn in classrooms where all of their classmates — and I mean, in most cases, every single one — are black and Latino, and nearly every student is poor.
There is so much here to respond to. First this analysis is clearly about what happens in elementary schools, and whatever "racial and socioeconomic divisions" this mother has found in elementary school, just wait until high school. We are a segregated school system. So does this mean that we should be fighting against this and supporting policies that would lead to more integration? Or should we focus on making the schools that Black and Latino students go to are the best they can be for these students?

The New York State attorney general’s office accused four major retailers on Monday of selling fraudulent and potentially dangerous herbal supplements and demanded that they remove the products from their shelves.
As early as the opening, we can see issues with the handling of the subject matter that give ample room to herbal supplement apologists.
The apologist could start with the semantic objection, "What is an herbal supplement that does not contain the ingredients on the label -- it is just a filler pill." He will go on to establish that this constitutes supplement fraud for sure. But the author seeks to smuggle the idea of danger into the idea of herbal medicine and would not be able to do that if the products were more carefully engineered. In other words, these fraudulent herbal supplements only present dangers because they're fraudulent; if they contained what they were supposed to they would be safe.
The apologist would be deeply mistaken.
Sadly, even though this is just one little paragraph, the problems do not stop there. The 4 major retailers targeted by the investigation are being set-up (through the use of that "major" label) as giants in the industry. While this may be true by the numbers, it's also a very easy point for an apologist to knock down. One can almost imagine the smaller scale "herbal remedy" operation -- "Is it really any surprise big corporations fail to provide a quality herbal product? They care about you. They only care about their bottom line."
Suffice it to say, the handling oo the reporting, as well as the circumstances of the investigation look like they're going to leave much to be desired. If thee early presentation fails persist throughout the article, it would have the effect of turning this should-be exposé into little more than a flash the pan.
We'll see this is exactly what happens.
