๐ Highlight words as they are spoken (karaoke anybody?). ๐ Navigate video by clicking on words. ๐ Share snippets of text (with video attached!). ๐ Repurpose by remixing using the text as a base and reference.
If I understand it correctly, with hyperaudio, one can also create transcription to somebody else's video or audio when embedded.
In that case, if you add to hyperaudio the annotation capablity of hypothes.is or docdrop, the vision outlined in the article on Global Knowledge Graph is already a reality.

@55:39
I would feel a little bit sad, but at the same time, this is a pattern I've seen happen over and over again. And especially with these big ideas about computing and self-expression and things like that [...] people start with these huge, huge ideas, but I think that they are so different--the diff is so much between where society is now and what some of these people are thinking about--that the most that can be absorbed at one time is like one unit--one meme--from that whole big vision. So, we're just gonna take like one small step at a time, and [...] you kind of just have to accept that, you know, that's success.

Is video making podcasts obsolete?
No.
I'm two years shy of 30 and I've been listening to "podcasts" - that is, audio programs distributed over RSS - nearly every day since Middle School. In all of that time, the word - not the medium, I'd argue - podcast has been so unnecessarily stretched to oblivion. Before making statements like this... can we please just... try out a few different words to describe what we're talking about here?
I listen to content because I be Doin Something dog. Cannot and will not look, and the extra production time required to just make a video version has continued to cause friction with the sort of content I actually want to hear.

The historian in me always wants to look back at how this sort of media control has played out historically, so thinking about examples like William Randolph Hearst, Henry Luce, David Sarnoff, Axel Springer, Kerry Packer, or Rupert Murdoch across newspapers, radio, television, etc. might be interesting. See also: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_proprietor
Tim Wu's The Master Switch is pretty accessible in this area.
On the intercultural front, the language (very careful public relations and "corporate speak") used in this leaked audio file of the most recent Twitter All Hands phone call might be fascinating and an interesting primary source for some of the questions you might be looking at on such an assignment. https://peertube.dk/w/2q8cdKR1mTCW7RyMQhcBEx
Who are the multiple audiences (acknowledged and unacknowledged) being addressed? (esp. as they address leaks of information in the call.)

Audio Description (AD) is usually defined as a way to make TV, films, theater, and other art and media content accessible to blind and low vision audiences. In this standardized approach, AD is often reduced to an add-on that gets created only after artworks are finished. AD and the artwork, in other words, remain distinct. Hosted by the AIM Lab, artistic mentors to the exhibition,ย Cheryl Green and Thomas Reid, led a 3-part online workshop (September 2021) that challenged this separation. Instead of keeping AD apart from the artwork, they asked: why not consider AD as an art form in and of itself? Beginning from a place that centres the experiences of those who are Blind and recognizes the art in audio description, the workshop invited participants to reflect critically both on visual information and to view it as more than mere access. It encouraged creativity not only through describing an image or object but recognizing how description can generate new art. Participants began with a catalyst piece of art of media piece โ audio described it, and then generated a whole new work using the audio description as the foundation. Instead of producing neutral or objective descriptions, participants were invited to experiment with approaches that highlighted the physical body, its situatedness, rich sensory experiences, and storytelling. The resulting series of works engage with AD in innovative and creative ways, exploring sound, text, movement, and their mixtures to build entire worlds. From an audio-logo to a binder that comes to life to sci-fi mediation to a lusty afternoon brewing mead to a video game adventure to artistic critiques of colonial pasts to glittering light that turn windowpanes into jellyfish, the collection of pieces in this online exhibit engages with the creative potentials of access.

as of February 2021, Europeana comprises 59%images and 38% text objects, but only 1% sound objects and 2% video objects.3 DPLA iscomposed of 25% images and 54% text, with only 0.3% sound objects, and 0.6% videoobjects.4Another reason, beyond cost, that audiovisual recordings are not widely accessible is the lack ofsufficiently granular metadata to support identification, discovery, and use, or to supportinformed rights determination and access control and permissions decisions on the part ofcollections staff and users.
Despite concerted efforts, there is a minimal amount of A/V material in Europeana and DPLA. This report details a pilot project to use a variety of machine-generated-metadata mechanisms to augment the human description efforts. Although this paragraph mentions rights determination, it isn't clear from the problem statement whether the machine-generated description includes anything that will help with rights. I would expect that unclear rightsโespecially for moving image contentโwould be a significant barrier to the open publication of A/V material.

I agree with everything in this post; I want to listen to more academic work in audio formats but find the process quite unsatisfying.
Either I find my attention drifting, or Iโm switching between apps to try and capture the essence of something Iโd like to come back to later.
Iโm hoping that things like Momento help get us closer to the ability to capture information from audio sources, but this would need to be built into ebook readers or the operating system itself, in order to be more broadly useful.
Itโd also need to be more reliable with respect to the quality of the machine learning transcription. At the moment itโs just useable, and requires a bit of interpretation.

Adaptive Soundtracks in Games
Adaptive music: Responds to events in game. Calm to tense when you enter a battle. Drops back down to calm.
Nintendo is really good at this. In mario, soundtrack remains the same but the instruments used change (signifying a change in environment/place).
In some games, audio speeds up as you accelerate.

On Twitter the other day I saw someone point out that the longer you listen to Song Exploder, the more you discover that the Voice Memos app on the iPhone has probably had more of an impact on songwriting than any other piece of software.ย But recording things in Voice Memos is just one step. The next is listening back to things, finding diamonds in the rough.
Voice recorder as a note taking device, particularly within the realm of music. A music commonplace.

But if youโre a stickler for the technical details, this is why the AirPods Max canโt pull off lossless audio in the truest sense. It also leaves Apple in an awkward spot where other high-end headphones that do support digital audio when hard wired โ over USB-C, for example โ could deliver the full lossless audio that the AirPods Max canโt.

In the coming months and years, weโll be working to further enable choice for creators, including giving them the power to choose not only how someone wants to create or monetize audio, but also where specific content is able to be consumed, ensuring creators have an opportunity to decide if they are aligned with the platforms distributing their content.
So this means you're going to use simple, open standards and tooling so that not only Anchor and Spotify will benefit? Or are you going to build closed systems that require the use of proprietary software and thus force subscriptions? Are you going to Balkanize the audio space to force consumers into your product and only your product? Or will producers be able to have a broad selection of platforms to which they could distribute their content?

When audio quality is high (vs low), people judge the content as better and more important. They also judge the speaker as more intelligent, competent, and likable. In an experiment, people rated a physicistโs talk at a scientific conference as 19.3% better when they listened to it in high quality audio vs slightly distorted, echo-prone audio.

Description: Silver-Pacuilla discusses the use of assistive technology in small tutoring groups. Students belonging to these groups are adults and have a learning disability related towards literacy. The conclusion was assistive technology can help bridge the literacy gap if used in small group settings
Rating: 6/10
Reason for the rating: Great discussion about students with learning disabilities. It tackles both the pros and the cons of technology, but this setting is for tutoring groups rather than classes.

Description: The authors discuss the use of podcasts to engage undergraduate students and aid in their test scores. The goal of the study was to have a teacher create podcasts of their lectures for students to listen to outside of class. Though the study found no correlation between exam scores and podcasts, the majority of the students did utilize them for studying and found them useful.
Rating: 8/10
Reasoning for the rating: The scope of my proposal will be using audiobooks or podcasts in a general English literature class. Though this discusses the use of podcasts for a large lecture based class, it is focused at biology rather than literature. Yet, the study is comprehensive about the influence on the podcasts on student's test scores.

Description: Researchers broke students into three different groups and presented the same information to students using different materials. One group was given only an e-book, another the audio-book, and the final group had access to both. They found no great correlation between comprehension and the modality which the information is given in.
Rating: 9/10
Reason for the rating: This test was given to college students about a non-fiction text which they were unfamiliar with. Students were randomly placed in their groups and the data analysis looks reputable. The information given in this text shows that audiobooks can be as effective as text in regards to comprehension. This will be valuable for the my proposal to incorporate audiobooks into English Literature classes.

all signals are interchangeable so any out port can be connected to any in port
For those of us whoโve had to deal with distinctions between audio and control signals, this is actually pretty major. However, itโs already become something in modular synthesis. People who get started in Eurorack, for instance, may not need to worry nearly as much about different types of signals as those who used Csound or, more importantly for this marketing copy, Cycling โ74 Max.

As was hinted at from the star
This is when โthe other shoe droppedโ. They planned this all along (since 2012). Hidden in plain sight was a more subtle strategy than people might have imagined.
-
The Grid is based around ideas familiar to Bitwig Studio
The continuity between these new modular features and the rest of the DAWโs workflow probably has unexpected consequences. Before getting information about BWS3, one might have thought that the โNative Modular Systemโ promised since the first version might still be an add-on. What the marketing copy around this โkiller featureโ makes clear, itโs the result of a very deliberate process from the start and itโll make for a qualitatively different workflow.

If the SM58 noise floor is calculated at room temperature, the voltage output is 0.00000032 volts.
This is equal to -130 dBV. The SM58 Vocal Microphone Specification Sheet says:
Sensitivity (at 1,000 Hz Open Circuit Voltage) โ54.5 dBV/Pa (1.85 mV)
At this sensitivity, the self-noise would be 94 - (-54.5 - -130) = 19 dB SPL, which is pretty typical and certainly not "lower than can be typically measured".

This selection tool has nothing intrinsically to do with annotation. Itโs job is to make your job easier when you are constructing a link to an audio or video segment.
I'm reminded of a JavaScript tool written by Aaron Parecki that automatically adds a start fragment to the URL of his page when the audio on the page is paused. He's documented it here: https://indieweb.org/media_fragment

That's an awful lot of models. Are we to understand that these are all limited to WMA, a proprietary format, and this is hard-coded so that it cannot be overcome with a software/firmware update? Seriously?
