This is a good case study for what I talk about when I mean the fancub economy.
Wouldn't it be better if gklitt were a willing participant to this aggregation and republishing of his thoughts, even if that only meant that there were a place set up in the same namespace as his homepage that would allow volunteers ("fans") to attach notes that you wouldn't otherwise be aware of if you made the mistake of thinking that his homepage were his digital home, instead of the place he's actually chosen to live—on Twitter?

Is our personality inherited, or are we products of our environment? This is the classic debate on nature vs. nurture. Are we born with a given temperament, with a genetically determined style of interacting with others, certain abilities, with various behavioral patterns that we cannot even control? Or are we shaped by our experiences, by learning, thinking, and relating to others? Many psychologists today find this debate amusing, because no matter what area of psychology you study, the answer is typically both! We are born with a certain range of possibilities determined by our DNA. We can be a certain height, have a certain IQ, be shy or outgoing, we might be Black, Asian, White or Hispanic, etc. because of who we are genetically. However, the environment can have a profound effect on how our genetic make-up is realized. For example, an abused child may become shy and withdrawn, even though genetically they were inclined to be more outgoing. A child whose mother abused alcohol during the pregnancy may suffer from fetal alcohol syndrome, the leading cause of preventable mental retardation, even though the child was genetically endowed with the possibility of being a genius. So the best perspective may be that our genetic make-up provides a range of possibilities for our life, and the environment in which we grow determines where exactly we fall within that range.
Our genetic make-up is pre-determined. Our external and even certain genetic mutations but the environment plays a huge role on how each of our personalities are shaped, validated, molded and how we perceive ourselves and accept ourselves.

My plan is to turn Write of Passage into an independent publishing company, which will become the main growth channel for Write of Passage.
This is a tremendous opportunity for people to leave academia. Imagine being a technical writer, business writer, poet, or creative writer. This could be a good networking opportunity.
-
All these interests unite around a single initiative: the intersection between online writing, the Liberal Arts, and Judeo-Christian teachings.
This is exactly the intersection that I have seen and thought about for a long time. If David Perell sees this as a gap that intellectuals can fill, then I am definitely onto something.

Early English Books Online offers a hundred thousand titles printed between 1475 and 1700. Massive tomes in Latin and the little pamphlets that poured off the presses during the Puritan revolution—schoolbooks, Jacobean tragedies with prompters’ notes, and political pamphlets by Puritan regicides—are all available to anyone in a major library.

How to Start an Online Consulting Business
One of the last industries to embrace digital transformation is consulting. However, the COVID-19 outbreak has accelerated the process far more than planned. According to Forbes, the globe will adopt a new normal, with work, study, and leisure shifting online. Globally, the consulting sector is worth $160 billion. In 2020, though, sales is likely to drop to $130 billion. As a result, most consulting firms are no longer solely focused on providing consulting services. Small and mid-sized businesses would struggle to stay afloat if they didn't make the switch from offline to online. But how can you get started as an online consultant and, more importantly, what tools should you use?

In one particularly ingenious entry, she explains the demise of the full stop (or, in American English, the “period”). If you have ever wondered why putting such once-crucial punctation in emails, phone messages or tweets now feels so awkward, here is the answer: “The period can feel so emphatic as to sound sarcastic, the internet’s version of ‘puh-leeze’ and ‘no, thank you’ and ‘srsly’ rolled into one tiny dot.” It can easily come across as passive-aggressive. Exclamation marks, moreover, “now convey warmth and sincerity”; failing to use them runs the risk of making the person you are messaging feel uncertain and anxious.

Early on, circa 2015, there was a while when every first-person writer who might once have written a Tumblr began writing a TinyLetter. At the time, the writer Lyz Lenz observed that newsletters seemed to create a new kind of safe space. A newsletter’s self-selecting audience was part of its appeal, especially for women writers who had experienced harassment elsewhere online.
What sort of spaces do newsletters create based upon their modes of delivery? What makes them "safer" for marginalized groups? Is there a mitigation of algorithmic speed and reach that helps? Is it a more tacit building of community and conversation? How can these benefits be built into an IndieWeb space?
How can a platform provide "reach" while simultaneously creating negative feedback for trolls and bad actors?

If they did I think there would actually be some quality of discussion, and it might be useful
I used to think this. (That isn't to say I've changed my mind. I'm just not convinced one way or the other.)
Another foreseeable outcome, relative to the time when the friend here was making the comment, is that it would lead to people being nastier in real life. Whether that's true or not (and I think that it might be), Twitter has turned out to be a cesspool, and it has shown us that people are willing to engage in all sorts of nastiness under their real name.

he actual ratio of face-to-face to online instruction can differ greatly and still be considered hybrid instruction
Really important for two reason - (1) we may not mean the same thing so we should clarify what we're talking about when in conversation on this important issue; and (2) What works in one course/setting may not work in another - great reminder to honor the unique nature of courses/settings.
-
Hybridity, by definition, is the combination of more than one thing, and thus hybrid teaching and learning will not ascribe to one set of rules; rather, it will ask students to be flexible and practice resilience, thinking critically about the nuance of context and the shifting roles and expectations for themselves and others therein.
Great reminder that this is a Brave New World! Old thinking doesn't match new realities, although of course it informs us.

With some continued clever searching today along with some help from an expert in Elizabethan English, I've found an online version of Robert Copland's (poor) translation from the French, some notes, and a few resources for assisting in reading it for those who need the help.
The text:
- The art of memory, that otherwyse is called the Phenix A boke very behouefull and profytable to all professours of scyences. Grammaryens, rethoryciens dialectyke, legystes, phylosophres [and] theologiens. Petrus, Ravennas, ca. 1448-1508 or 9., Copland, Robert, fl. 1540-1547. [Imprynted at London: In Fletestrete at the sygne of the George by Wyllyam Myddylton, [ca. 1545]]
This is a free text transcription and will be easier to read than the original black-letter Elizabethan English version.
For those without the background in Elizabethan English, here are a few tips/hints:
For the more obscure/non-obvious words:
- Middle English Dictionary (online) from University of Michigan
- Project Gutenberg Middle English Dictionary
Finally, keep in mind that the letter "y" can often be a printer's substitution for the English thorn character) Þ, so you'll often see the abbreviations yͤ for "the" and yͭ as an abbreviation for "that".
Copland's original English, first printing of Ravenna can be accessed electronically through a paid Proquest account at most universities. It is listed as STC 24112 if you have access to a firewall-free site that lets you look at books on Early English Books Online (EEBO). A photocopy can be obtained through EEBO reprints on Amazon. Unless you've got some reasonable experience with Elizabethan black-latter typography, expect this version to be hard to read. It isn't annotated or modernized.
@ehcolston I'm curious to hear what the Wilson/Pena text looks like. I'm guessing it's not scholarly. I think Wilson is a recent college grad and is/was a publishing intern at a company in the LA Area. I'm not sure of Pena's background. I suspect it may be a version of the transcribed text I've linked with a modest updating of the middle English which they've self-published on Amazon.
Of course, given the multiple translations here, if anyone is aware of a more solid translation of the original Latin text into English, do let us know. The careful observer will notice that the Latin version is the longest, the French quite a bit shorter, and the English (Copland) incredibly short, so there appears to be some untranslated material in there somewhere.

Charlotte Jee recently wrote a lovely fictional intro to a piece on a “feminist Internet” that crystallized something I can’t quite believe I never saw before; if girls, women and non-binary people really got to choose where they spent their time online, we would never choose to be corralled into the hostile, dangerous spaces that endanger us and make us feel so, so bad. It’s obvious when you think about it. The current platforms are perfectly designed for misogyny and drive literally countless women from public life, or dissuade them from entering it. Online abuse, doxing, blue-tick dogpiling, pro-stalking and rape-enabling ‘features’ (like Strava broadcasting runners’ names and routes, or Slack’s recent direct-messaging fiasco) only happen because we are herded into a quasi-public sphere where we don’t make the rules and have literally nowhere else to go.
A strong list of toxic behaviors that are meant to keep people from having a voice in the online commons. We definitely need to design these features out of our social software.

The share of revenue that creators can earn seems to depend on how easily they could leave. Moving one’s email list away from Substack is simple, so the firm lets writers keep 90% of their revenues. Game-makers on Roblox, who are basically stuck there, keep about 25%.

My assertion is based on the observation that a great deal of learning does take place in connective environments on the world wide web, that these have scaled to large numbers, and that often they do not require any institutional or instructional support.
I wrote some thoughts on this here: Without anyone's permission: The open web and online learning.

Discord really did have the feel of a physical conference space, where everyone came together to chat, share and hang out, and the live Youtube comment facility that accompanied the presentations and keynotes really helped to encourage discussion. My only small regret is that with so much of the engagement happening across multiple conference platforms, there was less activity on the hashtags on twitter, which makes it a little harder to look back over all the discussions that took place.
Having multiple channels to check and watch both during and after a conference can certainly split up the conversation stream, make things difficult to follow and can create context collapse. It can also be overwhelming to have multiple different channels that one feels like they need to watch to stay on top of what is going on.
It did help here to have the hashtag(s) for the conference piped into the Discord stream so that they could be watched in their own space without needing to leave the conference space created by the Discord server.

Problems with accessibility and considerations of disability that are specific to online teaching and learning; The way in which traditional teaching methods and approaches tend to gloss over trauma or ignore it completely; The fact that so many college students are hungry or homeless while still trying to get good grades; The general lack of good digital pedagogies that reinforce and hold up the human person and their needs; The overall dearth of solid, meaningful professional development available to faculty—professional development that goes beyond the advice about putting images in your course and creating video lectures, and that really tries to tackle what it means to teach online.
Evergreen concerns in online ed, even after covid is over (or more manageable).
-
Silence has power and silence has vulnerability. That person maintaining the silence wields the power, and that person waiting on a response is subject to that power. Knowing that, critical pedagogy looks at the relationship between the silent person and the person listening for an answer for clues about agency, oppression, and what change might be needed to make that relationship more democratic.
Important to think of what we're communicating, intentionally or otherwise.
-
It may seem that the pedagogist sits back and scans the horizon of education for new things to talk about, but that could not be farther from the truth. The critical pedagogist is one whose practice undergoes constant revision in the interests of creating greater and more effective means for students, and other humans, to thrive.
Really great reminder that humanity and flourishing are the end goals; not cool ed tech.

This article is ostensibly a response to the use of proctoring software in higher education.
But in order to do that properly the author has also delved into learning and assessment.
It's a well-written piece that questions some of our taken-for-granted assumptions around assessment.

Not only is it kind to do so, but it creates a mini-relationship with people who will be key to our success.
Online analog could be getting to know the help desk/tech support/instructional designers prior to the course launching. Or, at least familiarizing yourself with what to do when those issues pop up!
-
Finally, arriving early enables us to make contacts with early arriving attendees.
Online ed analogy could be reaching out to students via email or phone prior to class start date.
