A shared personal interest and connection increases engagement, regardless of what sort of environment the conversation takes place in. It just so happens that online spaces are the easiest environments to express such interest and make such connections.

Fellow KM blogger from back in the day [[Jim McGee]] (he blogs since Oct 2001) articulates in a slightly different way something that is key ot my perspective on org KM too: PKM is the foundation for org KM. I picked that up from Sveiby's 1997 book. n:: Jim phrases it here as K sharing doesn't happen between people when they have nothing to share, bc they don't do PKM. Then any sharing is a burden as it requires formulation first. I share stuff with colleagues daily, because it is a benefit to share things I already formulated.

Not to mention highly inefficient , slow and unresponsive. The biggest thing that we've settled to see this as normal and consider a 10% speed increase as an innovation , think of what would happened if we had a better protocol for sharing information that followed the original design.
I'm particularly concerned with the adoption curve of technology when we disregard optimization it serves indirectly as a way to discriminate against people that can't afford the fastest connection the latest hardware. I wonder if we're at the point with AI assisted coding that we can optimize these systems and the cost of doing so would justify "doing it properly" , yet if we don't know about this principles we're completely on the blind.

I love the diversity of ideas here! So many different ways to do it all and perspectives on the pros/cons. It's all incredibly idiosyncratic, just like our notes.
I probably default to a far extreme of sharing the vast majority of my notes openly to the public (at least the ones taken digitally which account for probably 95%). You can find them here: https://hypothes.is/users/chrisaldrich.
Not many people notice or care, but I do know that a small handful follow and occasionally reply to them or email me questions. One or two people actually subscribe to them via RSS, and at least one has said that they know more about me, what I'm reading, what I'm interested in, and who I am by reading these over time. (I also personally follow a handful of people and tags there myself.) Some have remarked at how they appreciate watching my notes over time and then seeing the longer writing pieces they were integrated into. Some novice note takers have mentioned how much they appreciate being able to watch such a process of note taking turned into composition as examples which they might follow. Some just like a particular niche topic and follow it as a tag (so if you were interested in zettelkasten perhaps?) Why should I hide my conversation with the authors I read, or with my own zettelkasten unless it really needed to be private? Couldn't/shouldn't it all be part of "The Great Conversation"? The tougher part may be having means of appropriately focusing on and sharing this conversation without some of the ills and attention economy practices which plague the social space presently.
There are a few notes here on this post that talk about social media and how this plays a role in making them public or not. I suppose that if I were putting it all on a popular platform like Twitter or Instagram then the use of the notes would be or could be considered more performative. Since mine are on what I would call a very quiet pseudo-social network, but one specifically intended for note taking, they tend to be far less performative in nature and the majority of the focus is solely on what I want to make and use them for. I have the opportunity and ability to make some private and occasionally do so. Perhaps if the traffic and notice of them became more prominent I would change my habits, but generally it has been a net positive to have put my sensemaking out into the public, though I will admit that I have a lot of privilege to be able to do so.
Of course for those who just want my longer form stuff, there's a website/blog for that, though personally I think all the fun ideas at the bleeding edge are in my notes.
Since some (u/deafpolygon, u/Magnifico99, and u/thiefspy; cc: u/FastSascha, u/A_Dull_Significance) have mentioned social media, Instagram, and journalists, I'll share a relevant old note with an example, which is also simultaneously an example of the benefit of having public notes to be able to point at, which u/PantsMcFail2 also does here with one of Andy Matuschak's public notes:
[Prominent] Journalist John Dickerson indicates that he uses Instagram as a commonplace: https://www.instagram.com/jfdlibrary/ here he keeps a collection of photo "cards" with quotes from famous people rather than photos. He also keeps collections there of photos of notes from scraps of paper as well as photos of annotations he makes in books.
It's reasonably well known that Ronald Reagan shared some of his personal notes and collected quotations with his speechwriting staff while he was President. I would say that this and other similar examples of collaborative zettelkasten or collaborative note taking and their uses would blunt u/deafpolygon's argument that shared notes (online or otherwise) are either just (or only) a wiki. The forms are somewhat similar, but not all exactly the same. I suspect others could add to these examples.
And of course if you've been following along with all of my links, you'll have found yourself reading not only these words here, but also reading some of a directed conversation with entry points into my own personal zettelkasten, which you can also query as you like. I hope it has helped to increase the depth and level of the conversation, should you choose to enter into it. It's an open enough one that folks can pick and choose their own path through it as their interests dictate.

Much like Umberto Eco (How to Write a Thesis), in the closing paragraphs of his essay, Goutor finally indicates that note cards can potentially be reused for multiple projects because each one "contains a piece of information which does not depend on a specific context for its value." While providing an example of how this might work, he goes even further by not only saying that "note-cards should never be discarded" but that they might be "recycled" by passing them on to "another interested party" while saying that their value and usefulness is dependent upon how well they may have adhered to some of the most basic note taking methods. (p35)

This article is for those who want to keep traveling despite restrictions due to covid. Basically giving tips on how to navigate the multiple governmental restrictions and policies including links to airline or country websites for choosing destinations. Because of this trend in travel advice in covid times, we may see attitudes towards travel shift to travel knowing the risks involved (quarantine, masks requirements, etc.) and hence see tourism rise again. Last minute covid holiday packages. What if the trend for remaining home also stayed the same for next five years and the adventure seekers become the avatars for the folks who want to stay at home.
The crisis is changing the way how people will enjoy their international holiday, with an extra concern on testing and quarantine expenses and risk taking. That may have an impact on the tourism market, asking the airline companies to provide flexible policies /products and may witness the booming of travel insurance market.

Students learn a great deal by explaining their ideas to others and by participating in activities in which they can learn from their peers. They develop skills in organizing and planning learning activities, working collaboratively with others, giving and receiving feedback and evaluating their own learning.
I completely agree with this. As I stated in my other annotation, being able to collaborate with peers is an excellent way to learn, since you can see/hear other people's thoughts and ideas that you may have not thought of yourself.

This reminds me of what Bodong has discussed in the Chinese paper on the difference between "analytics" and "analysis". If we can treated "analysis" as an objective, pure technical process, or maybe we cannot, "analytics" can never be objective. For any research, what is considered as evidence, how to collect evidence, and how to interpret the results, either the quantitative or qualitative, are far from objective or pure technical.

I had an assumption that learning analytics mostly use data collected from online learning environment. This may not be true, but it is possible that online teaching can change people's mindset of what learning is, and how learning should occur.

The assessment of frequencies and sequences of regulatory activities in learning environments provides a novelperspective on SRL that complements and potentially supersedes traditional self-report measures
Learning analytics really can help provide a better description of students' behavior, in which couldn't be measured by survey or other self-report methods. But it seems there can be research performed on how what students actually do can be related to what they reported they were doing.

Through the use of mobile devices, learning man-agement systems (LMS), and social media, a greater portion of the learning process generates digital trails. A student who logs into an LMS leaves thousands of data points, including navigation patterns, pauses, reading habits, and writing habits. These data points may be ambiguous and require additional exploration in order to understand what an extended pause of reading means
The digital technologies formed new media for organizing educational content and student interactivity. Talking specifically about the rich data in LMS, which still in demand for in-depth research and exploration, may bring instructors deeper understanding on students' performance and their personal academic needs.

I’d run across this wonder of an app a couple of years back too. I’ve been using it for a while, but to post to my WordPress and WithKnown based websites. WordPress and some of it’s subsidiary plugins utilize URL parameters in such a way that URL Forwarder can be easily configured for them as well. Most proposals (148) were for a new study and publication, with confirmation of original studies’ results (3) being quite uncommon.
This is a very important statistic to quote, because people always assume the negative use case, i.e., "weaponizing data". I think that does happen, but the more we can gather the statistics, the better we are able to address it.

Within the workings of the informal economy bullying and violence is rife. The harshness of these conditions, and the sword of damocles of deportation, is precisely why this labour is so cheap, and so many businesses opt for it. Bullying makes workers subservient, and scares them away from industrial organising (although there are now amazing unions now fighting for workers in these sectors - the IWGB, IWW, and UVW.) It is not just those businesses that do well out of this exploitation. It makes things cheaper for everyone, and oils the cogs of the whole economy. Many people are happy to reap this work’s benefits without ever taking responsibility for the suffering it causes.

My friends here who started a micro-brewery tell stories that when they were starting, the other micro-breweries in the region did not seem them as a threat/competition, and in fact, offered advice, equipment, supplies. The people who do this stuff see it as a net gain for everyone if someone can help raise the regional interest in craft beer; if everyone grows more customers, everyone wins. It’s not a tech startup mentality.
Craft beer is a fascinating world, partly because of this approach to sharing. Much of the so-called “Craft Beer Revolution” happened through homebrewers who were sharing tips and recipes online (not to mention ingredients and samples offline). The idea, in many an indie/craft scene, is that the out-group is the Mainstream. Very similar story among owners of Third Wave cafés. Of course, there are differences. But still… When you have a “common enemy” (Anheuser-Busch, Starbucks, McGraw-Hill…), it’s much easier to grow together.

The term "sharing economy" was stolen a few years ago, by firms that aren't sharing anything.
The technology of these platforms is not expensive to build. Meanwhile, these companies have skyrocketing valuations (exceeding even the growth trajectory of Facebook) because they are absorbing value from the people actually creating and providing the value.
Everyone on the Internet is being exploited without noticing.
"Our personal data is not unlike labor -- you don’t lose by giving it away, but if you don’t get anything back you’re not receiving what you deserve. Information ... is inherently valuable."
An economy where workers get fair exchange for the value they produce is possible. Rustrum points out these means:
- Cooperatives. In particular, platform coops
- ESOP, employee stock ownership plans
- Crowd funding
- Blockchain - digital peer-to-peer secure transactions

Hypothes.is reminds me a lot of some of the primary goals of the MeAggregator JISC project, as well as having a lot in common with other annotation tools (obviously!). The implementation appears smooth and reliable, and having just revisited it (thanks to a Facebook post by a friend of a friend), I wish I had been using it for a while now. I suspect it will be finding its way in to my teaching practice very soon.<br> This page on their site "Back to School with Annotation: 10 Ways to Annotate with Students" has some useful suggestions. I particularly need to check out the private groups and sharing options, and investigate the possibility of collating annotations (potentially producing new documents from a set of annotations).
